MILLSTADT, Ill. (Aug. 19, 2007) – Defending O’Reilly POWRi National Midget Series champion Brad Kuhn (Avon, Ind.) inched closer to a second straight title Friday night at Macon (Ill.) Speedway, capturing the 30-lap co-sanctioned POWRi/USAC National Midget Series race and taking over the POWRi points lead.

Kuhn, now 145 points ahead of Mike Hess (Petersburg, Ill.), led Brad Loyet (Sunset Hills, Mo.) around the track for all 30 tours in winning his POWRi race of 2007. Loyet, the series leader in victories, finished second, but didn’t go down without a fight.

Kuhn earned the pole and raced around fellow POWRi regular Dereck King (Vienna, Ill.) at the start, and utilized the outside to pull away. Loyet, who started third, also got by King quickly, and tagged Hess’s tail tank for several laps. The pair ran nose-to-tail, with Loyet and his No. 05 Loyet Motorsports Pink Ford/Spike looking for any avenue to press by Kuhn’s No. 43nz Quin Buildings Mopar/Stealth owned by Michael Quin.

After running the high side for 20 laps, the track began to take rubber, thus forcing most of the field to resort to run the bottom. Continuing his trend, however, Kuhn never made a mistake and kept Loyet at bay at the checkered flag.

Loyet remains third in the point standings but is now only 45 points in arrears of Hess for the second spot. Hess, who had led the standings since April, suffered a tough night, finishing 17th. Shane Hollingsworth (Noblesville, Ind.), King and Darren Hagen (Riverside, Calif.) rounded out the top five. The race marked the fourth and final POWRi/USAC co-sanctioned race of the season.
