brad looney wins at C.AR.S

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. (January 20) - Brad Looney must have thought that the Central Arizona Raceway owed him one after breaking while leading last years finale and catching a piece of debris while leading handily on Wednesday night. Saturday, the Republic Missouri driver collected on that debt by wheeling his Republic Glass/Diamond Pet Food/Willard Quarries/Ron Mitchell Racing Photos/GRT/Monte Carlo to the $3000 winner's check and also collected on the $500 Fast Undercar bounty place on three time feature winner Terry Phillips.

Looney and 5-Time World 100 Winner Billy Moyer brought the field of 24 to the green on a racetrack that was quickly taking rubber in the middle groove. Looney shot to the lead, slid up the race track in turn two, but held off Moyer as he slotted second, Kellen Chadwick jumped to third, Sonny Findling was fourth from sixth, and Paul Mueller round out the top five.

Kile and Purkey would each drop Mueller on spot on lap two, as the field quickly strung itself out as Looney was setting a blistering pace up front. He would pulled away to nearly a straightway advantage on Moyer in the first five laps.

Findling would get by Chadwick for third on lap six as Steve Rushin pulled into the infield, and Matt Miller dropped four wheels off the frontstretch loosing several positions in the process. Looney continued to blister the field as he quickly reeled off the opening ten circuits, as Kile took fourth from Chadwick.

The 5T machine of Jeff Taylor would slow in turn three on lap 11 ending the Arkansas drivers evening pre-maturely, necessitating the races first yellow, and bunching the field for a double file restart.

On the restart, Looney pulled away to lead Moyer, Findling, Chadwick, who retook fourth from Kile, Mueller, Casey Vitale, Al Purkey, Anderson, and Jimmy Mars.

Mars began searching the high-banked 3/8ths mile and found the outside to his liking as he jumped Anderson on lap 15, and pulling even with and raced side by side with Purkey. The trio would trade eighth back and forth over the next three laps until the caution would again appear for the spun #28 of Jimmy Wistler in turn four.

The field would take the single file restart on lap 18, and Vitale would become the man on the move as he jumped to the high side to take sixth from Mueller, opening the door for both Anderson and Purkey as Mueller faded to ninth.

As Looney continued to leave everyone in his wake, Vitale stayed upstairs and would race side by side with Anderson on laps 21 & 22 for sixth. Vitale dispatched of Anderson on lap 23 and began to pressure Kile for fifth.

With just five to go, it was Looney on cruise, Moyer, Findling, Chadwick, the charging Vitale, Anderson, Purkey, and Mars.

Vitale leaped to from sixth to fourth on lap 26, and began to close on Findling in third. Mars would overtake Purkey on lap 28, while Looney took the white flag at the start/finish line.

Vitale would complete his seventh to third charge by overtaking Findling, but no one had anything for Brad Looney as he lead from green to checkered for his first ever Wild West Shootout feature victory.
