MILLSTADT, Ill. (July 8, 2007) – It took only one corner for Brett Anderson (Belleville, Ill.) to take the lead for good in Saturday’s Finley Memorial presented by Fred Bach Auto Body race at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville in O’Reilly POWRi Midget Series competition, but it took more than that for him to score his second victory of 2007.

With Indiana Sprint car veteran Jon Stanbrough (Jamestown, Ind.) closing in near the end of the 30-lapper, Anderson proved strong in lapped traffic by leading every lap and holding off Stanbrough – who showed promise by coming from ninth to second – by a half straightaway.

Anderson started on the pole and won the race to Turn 1 ahead of fellow front row starter Hud Cone. Anderson pulled away, leaving Cone – who entered the event fifth in the points standings – to battle for second with Dave Camfield Jr. Instead, Cone’s race ended after only two laps when a flat left front tire forced his retirement and a 20th-place finish.

Though Anderson roared through the field nearly unchallenged, five caution periods helped keep the remainder of the field close. Among those who were able to catch up to him was Stanbrough, who answered the call to substitute for Brad Loyet in the No. 05 Loyet Motorsports Spike/Ford. Loyet was injured in an accident last month during the “Knoxville Midget Nationals” and is expected to return to action soon.

With the car owner points on the line, Stanbrough – looking for his maiden POWRi victory – moved the No. 05 to second on Lap 20 and looked for his opportunity to shoot past Anderson. However, the aforementioned cautions all came early in the event, and Stanbrough ran out of time to beat Anderson and the No. 11 Keith Anderson Village Buggy Bath Spike/Fontana.

Rich Camfield (Decatur, Ill.) claimed third in the race, followed by Joey Montgomery (Fredericktown, Mo.) and Brett Beauchamp (Fairland, Ind.).

While Loyet – who entered the evening third in the points standings – didn’t compete, neither did the two drivers ahead of him. Series points leader Mike Hess and defending series champion Brad Kuhn – who was second entering the evening – were not among those in the 20-car feature field. Sidelined without a motor, Hess hopes to return to the series’ next race July 20 at Macon (Ill.) Speedway for Dana Godfrey Memorial NASCAR Night, which is scheduled to see NASCAR Nextel Cup Series champion Tony Stewart compete.
