Inside Line Promotions - STOCKTON, Calif. (March 18, 2018) - Brian Brown was a contender last Saturday night during the FVP Platinum Battery Western Spring Shootout.
The FVP and Casey's General Stores backed driver was quick from the time the team unloaded their sprint car at Stockton Dirt Track for the only World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series race of the weekend following Friday's rainout.
"Hats off to the Outlaws and everyone at Stockton for trying to get the race in," Brown said. "The grounds were really wet when we got there. It could have easily been cancelled, but everyone worked hard to make sure we got to race."
Brown, who met with approximately 200 FVP employees and customers prior to the action, was stout from the start as he set quick time during qualifying for the third time in nine races this season. It marked his eighth race of timing in the top three this yera.
"You have to keep yourself in position all night long at these Outlaws races," he said. "Qualifying has been our strong suit all year long with our Charlie Garrett Engines. Chad and Michael did a great job and we had a great car from the get-go."
Brown won a heat race from the pole position to lock himself into the dash. He then advanced from fourth to second place in the dash to start the 30-lap main event on the outside of the front row.
"We felt like we had a good opportunity," he said. "We took off and Cory (Eliason) was setting a good pace early. We got into traffic and ran him back down. I was cruising along there. The track was treacherous in spots. You had to make sure you hit the holes right. I cleared a couple of lapped cars. Then I went into turns three and four and hooked a hole wrong. The next thing I knew it shot me off the track."
Brown was running second when the incident occurred on Lap 11. He pulled off the track and was credited with a 22[sup]nd[/sup]-place finish.
"On a track like that you're not going to have a perfect race car," he said. "You just try to limit your mistakes. You do everything right all night long and one mistake sends you off the track. You go from running second to finishing 22[sup]nd[/sup]. It was a bummer to end our trip out west like that, but the positive is that we know we have speed. I look at it like we could have three Outlaws wins this season if circumstances were different. That's a confidence boost to know we have that fast of a race car."
Brown and his team have returned to the Midwest. Their next race is to be determined.
