CLARKSVILLE, TN – Shannon Buckingham of Morristown, TN kept all challengers behind his S&S Millwright Barry Wright/604 Saturday night to win his second StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series event of the season at Clarksville StormPay.com Speedway. With the victory in the 50-lap race, Buckingham, who led wire-to-wire, increased his National points lead.

David Gentry of Lewisburg, TN finished second in the Hawkins Equipment Mastersbilt/604 after a battle with Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN in the Miller Brothers Coal Warrior/604. Gentry and Johnson got together coming down for the white flag, and Johnson climbed the frontstretch wall, putting him out of the race.

Zach Nichols of Cedartown, GA took the third spot in the B&B Specialized Hauling GRT/604, and Robert Martin Attorney At Law Pole Award winner Jeff Purvis of Clarksville, TN was fourth in the StormPay.com/NeSmith Chevrolet Warrior/604. Jeff Smith of Villanow, GA rounded out the top five in the Smith and Sons Trucking Warrior/604.

Terry Lumley of Twin City, GA finished sixth in the Kar House Racing Radiators Mastersbilt/604, and Ryan Gifford of Winchester, TN took the seventh spot in the Jackie’s Fast Tax Service GRT/604.

Jordy Nipper of Gray, GA started 22nd, and finished eighth in the Scotty’s Muffler Walter Newman/604 to earn the NeSmith Chevrolet Hard Charger of the Race Award. Steven Ashby of Cunningham, TN was ninth in The Wheel Shop Stinger/604, and Johnson rounded out the top ten after his hard crash.

Buckingham grabbed the lead from his outside front row starting spot at the drop of the green flag followed by Purvis, Carnell Parker of Clarksville, TN in the Parker Racing Mastersbilt/604, Shane Roberts of Bristol, TN in the Pizza Plus GRT/604, and Ashby. By the third lap, Johnson and Gentry came from the fourth row to sixth and seventh respectively.

On lap five, Purvis and Parker were battling side-by-side for second, and Buckingham opened up a lead in front of them. Buckingham started working lapped traffic by the eighth lap, while Johnson and Gentry climbed into the fourth and fifth spots. Parker got bogged down in lapped traffic on 11, enabling Johnson to close in.

Johnson passed Parker for the third spot on lap 14, and one lap later, the “Chattanooga Flash” was challenging Purvis for second on the inside. Johnson got under Purvis in turn two on lap 17, to take the second spot. Three laps later, Gentry got around Purvis for the third position.

On lap 26, Johnson caught Buckingham, and began to look inside to challenge for the lead. After a lap 28 restart, Johnson got inside Buckingham, and the pair raced side-by-side through turns three and four. Johnson raced along side Buckingham again after a lap 32 restart, but Buckingham held him off to remain the race leader.

Johnson was racing for a $1,000 bonus after winning the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series race on Thursday night at Duck River Speedway in Wheel, TN. By lap 35, Buckingham and Johnson began to pull away from the third place car of Gentry.

Gentry was able to race his way back up to the lead duo in the next ten laps, and with five to go, a three-car battle for the lead ensued.

On lap 49, Johnson made a try going to the high side to challenge Buckingham for the lead, but Gentry took advantage of the open inside groove, and drove under Johnson and Buckingham coming off the fourth turn. Johnson powered off the fourth turn on the high side, as Gentry slid up the race track.

With the white flag in the air, Gentry and Johnson got together, sending Johnson’s car climbing the front straightaway wall, and getting on its left side. Johnson’s car came off the wall going into the first turn with a broken radiator blowing a big plume of steam, the right-front wheel tucked under the race car.

Johnson was done for the finish of the race, and Buckingham held off Gentry in a green-white-checkered finish with a one car-length advantage.

In preliminary action, Purvis set fast time among the 30 entrants with a lap around the ¼-mile clay oval in 13.500 seconds, and then when on to win the CPR/StormPay.com Lightning Quick 6 Dash to earn the pole position. Gil Smith of Nashville, TN won the 12-lap B-Main in the Full Throttle Warrior/604.

The next event for the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Tour will be a two-day, $5,000-to-win show at Swinging Bridge Raceway in Jackson, MS on June 9-10. For more information about the StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series visit the series web site at www.stormpayracing.com.
