Lonnie Wheatley, EL PASO, Texas (August 30, 2018) – John Carney II is set to get back into Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour action with this weekend’s “Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin” Memorial at Wheatland, Missouri’s Lucas Oil Speedway.
The event culminates with a $10,000 winner’s share on Saturday night following preliminary competition on both Thursday and Friday.
“We have usually been pretty fast there as long as we avoid trouble,” Carney commented.
Carney has raced his way into each of the last two Hockett/McMillin Memorial feature events, missing a top-ten finish by just one position last year after posting a third-place run in preliminary action the previous year. Carney has also posted a top-ten in past ASCS Speedweek competition at Lucas Oil Speedway.
Carney will be back aboard the Carney Racing No. J2 Sprint Car for the first time since Speedweek in June after racing on the west coast and then in Iowa with the California-based Clayton Snow No. 7 team and then joining force with Scott Brown for Eagle Raceway’s Racesaver Nationals that kicked off the month of September.
This rendition of the Racesaver Nationals on August 31 through September 2 didn’t go as planned for the 2015 event champion.
“We just got in a hole to begin with that we couldn’t dig our way out of,” the driver of the Lubbock Wrecker Service/Steward Builders No. 11c commented.
Carney did salvage the weekend with a podium finish of third in the Jake Ita Memorial Race of Champions portion of the event.
The three-day extravaganza kicked off in promising fashion with Carney winning his Race of Champions heat race on Friday to open the weekend.
And it continued to look promising when Carney scored a heat race win in the opening leg of the Racesaver Nationals the following evening. But things soured when Carney was collected in a feature crash that resulted in an 18th-place finish.
“We were going along just fine and basically just got wrecked,” Carney commented.
The following night started with heat race problems that buried Carney in G Main action. Carney made his best effort at running through the alphabet, winning the ‘G’ and ‘F” Mains before finishing second in the ‘E’ and fourth in the ‘D’ before the charge stalled at 11th in the ‘C’.
The tough luck on the preliminary nights limited Carney to a ‘B’ Main finish in the finale of the event that featured over 100 competitors with the third-place Race of Champions offering a glimpse of what could have been.
Now, Carney is set to get back into his No. J2 Sprint Car that he drove to a top-ten finish in ASCS Speedweek points.
