Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) dodged Mother Nature once again to the delight of a large crowd of rain weary race fans in the Missouri and Kansas City area. CMS hosted the Southern Midget Racing Association (SMRS) with a talented field of 26 drivers from the surrounding 5 state area including 2 drivers from Colorado. The Home Depot sponsored show of Mighty Modifieds, ULMA Late Models, Street Stocks and B- Modifieds were equally entertaining with several drivers making the haul to Warrensburg after their local tracks were cancelled due to the wet conditions. The high car count on Saturday night was not surprising when 137 cars signed in for the weekly and special racing events. Some of the best Modified drivers in the area were on hand with 38 cars registered in the pits. CMS was the only ULMA track open for racing this weekend with 22 Late Model drivers competing at the high banks. The 18 Street Stocks were strong once again during their feature and 33 B-Modifieds were tuning up for their special race next weekend. It was a long night of thrilling race action with 26 events including the heats and feature races.

CMS draws many of the best modified drivers in the area and when CMS is one of the few tracks racing you expect a strong field of drivers. And race fans were not disappointed when Matt Johnson outpaced the best in the area with his first feature win at CMS this season in front of the roaring crowd in just his second race at the track. Johnson, Tim Karrick, James McMillin, Dean Wille and Chad Lyle were the heat race winners and Aaron Marrant, Joe Walker, Dave Meyer and Jeremy Johnson transferred through the B- Main into the A-Main feature race. Johnson ran away from the field early, but several cautions kept the field close with Johnson and Dustin Boney side by side for several laps around lap twelve to eighteen. Boney led Johnson after they passed each other for the lead several times. Then during a re-start after a caution for Aaron Marrant when he lost his steering coming down the front side, Boney lost his lead on the lap eighteen re-start. He slipped to the high side in turn three and Johnson stayed low to pass him and held on to the led to the checkered flag. James McMillin had another strong run and had a scare when he was bumped and spun across the line for a third place finish. Terry Schultz charged up through the field from a fifteenth place start up to a solid sixth place finish.

The ULMA Late Models were equally well represented with many talented drivers racing in the only ULMA race event of the weekend when several local tracks cancelled their race programs. Bryan Allison picked up the Late Model racing action in heat one with a victory over Steve Clancy and Chad Frewaldt. Then Danny Lorton followed with a solid win in the second heat past Fred King and Kevin Coyne. Bob King drove to the checkers in the third heat with Brett Rollert and Jason Estes close behind. Bob King received a huge break and moved up front in the starting grid when Allison forgot his driving gloves and had to leave the track before the start of the feature. Bob and his brother, Fred King moved out quickly from the start into the lead and led the feature for the remainder of the caution free race. Bob held on for his second Late Model feature win in a row at CMS. Brett Rollert made a nice high side move around Steve Clancy on lap 9 to finish in third. The Late Model feature was great show with a green to checkers finish without a single yellow flag for the talented twenty one drivers.

The exciting street stocks always show the CMS fans that exciting racing action is a normal part of their feature events. Brian Johnson once again stole the show with his fourth feature win of the season over Dan Danner. Danner led the field to the start with Johnson outside on row one. Johnson jumped out to the lead early with Danner closing the gap late in the race. After some early challenges, Danner could not make it close enough to pass him. Herb Danner was unfortunate when he was caught up in a five car pile up on lap nine and had to exit for the night with heavy damage. Brett Nail had temporary problem lighting up an exhaust fire in his car after the wreck, but returned to finish the race. There were several good races for positions behind the leaders including Jeff Lazenby, Chad Eickelberry, Ray Smith, Tammy Korff, Scotty Dukes and Ted Welschmeyer. Eickelberry drove up from a tenth place start to finish in fourth after some late moves around Dukes and Lazenby. The street stock heat winners were Don Danner, Brian Johnson and Ray Smith.

The B-Modifieds were preparing for their race special next weekend with some good racing action around the high banks. The B-Modified drivers are improving each week so the Special should be interesting next week. Scotty Martin once again won with his fifth feature of the season on some excellent low groove racing. Martin passed Chad Lebsock on lap seven on the low side of the smooth race surface. Lebsock was attempting to maintain a higher groove, but could not quite hold on to the lead when Martin passed him on lap seven. Max Grogan, a former CMS flagman made several low passes around drivers to move up to finish in second place. Michael Mullins continues to show consistent racing in this division and finished the feature in third after winning the first B- Modified heat race of the night over DJ Dumont and Mark Evinger. John Kuecker, Gary Lewis, Ethan Issacs and Cliff Owings transferred in from the B-Main before intermission. Other heat race winners were Chad Lebsock, Daren Poston and Scotty Martin. It was good to see Bobby Raybourne back on the track in his new B-Modified and he showed his smooth driving skills with a eighth place finish after starting in sixteenth.

The SMRS midgets were a great addition to the race program on Saturday night at CMS when Gary Taylor from Salpapa, Oklahoma won the feature race with some skilled racing on the high banks. Raef Essary from Arkansas, Taylor and Matt Sherrell from Tulsa Oklahoma won the heat races. Additional results will be reported in the SMRS press release.

Next week, CMS will host a Special B- Modified Feature when drivers will be competing for extra race payouts on Senior Night at the Races. Seniors will receive a FREE grandstand admission ticket when they bring a friend to the race. The B- Modified special event along with the Mighty Modifieds, ULMA Late Models and Street Stocks will be on hand racing on the CMS high banks.
