DEATHERAGE OVERCOMES DROUGHT, WINS MIGHTY MOD MAIN DURING CMS'/ 'D&S AUTOMOTIVE MACHINE SHOP RACE NIGHT'!
Young Whiz Wheeler Wins All Features In Saturday's Street Stock Skirmish!

Warrensburg, Missouri

For "a long-time-comin'", Concordia's Alan "Mr. IGA" Deatherage expected to once again return to victory circle. During Saturday's "D&S Automotive Machine Shop Race Night'' at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg, he finally found it after two solid years of 'bad luck blues'. Those blues turned green, $700 worth to be exact, as he outran a stellar field of 41 major midwest 'Mighty Modified' chauffeurs to lead him back to his winning ways in his Patricia's IGA/ War Wagon/ Game Day Trophy machine.
The return to glory also garnered Alan the top spot in the season's points run.
What may very well be discovered by long-time CMS' statistician Glyda Jaeger as a first time happening in the history of the "Super Action Excitement Track", Independence's 20 year old college student Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler, with only eleven weeks of racing under his belt, won his second 'A' Feature at CMS by smoothly handling his Wheeler Truck and Trailer Street Stock. But that wasn't what started the record search. Wheeler started last in the main event after having to qualify through the 'B' feature. Wheeler won that major event, too!
Another popular driver who's been on an unintentional hiatus from the Limited Late Model victory circle, found his path back to the top of his mountain. Sporting an engine assembled by the main sponsor of the night, D&S Automotive, Bates City's Mark 'mountain man' Evinger, the 2000 CMS LLM champ, returned to the peak by besting nineteen other top competitors.
When long time sprint racer Kenny Potter won his second WOFC Sprint car main affair for this season, the Harrisonville resident became the first CMS multi-winner this season. Out of 12 main events run so far at CMS this year, 11 different drivers have received the winners laurels.
Many of the Mods attending this week were practicing for the first CMS "Big One" of the 2003 CMS season, this Saturday night's Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa "Memorial Modified Mayhem." With a $22,000 total purse and big bucks, with $2,000 going to the "Mighty Modified", 40 lap championship feature, the 'practice' was serious.
Dean Wille had another good week, and was pacing the entire 24 car mod field for the first five circuits until the high pressure group, consisting of "Fast" Richard Layne, Deatherage, Terry 'the terminator' Schultz and 2001 champ Jimmy Dowell ran in all of the fully-available 'Walls to Walls' grooves.
"It got to the point where I didn't know exactly where I should try and run," stated a smiling Wille, who was $500 richer after the event was over. "They were all in a three-abreast situation behind me, and you just can't take up all the grooves."
Using the high, outside 'edge', Deatherage was able to 'out-blast' his foes every time they came out of turn two. Late in the race, he added a couple of other good maneuvers, and was able to pull his car out to a two car-length win; a big winning margin at the "Home of the Mighty Modifieds".
Defending champ Layne held tight for second, Wille had a strong third, Schultz found fourth and Jason 'trouble' Thompson again drove up to catch fifth.
Wille, Deatherage, Layne, Schultze, Jimmy Dowell and 'Smokin' Joe Walker, in his first outing this season, captured wins in the needed, six qualifying heats. To do the final sort-out for the main event starting positions, Dave Meyer and Tom Charles won their respective 'last chance', B features.
'Rooster' Charles put on the 'show of the night' in the Mods by scoring a miscue with the fourth turn wall in his qualifier, won the 'B' feature then drove 'slideways' the whole way to hustle up to a very swift seventh in the main after starting 19th. Concordia fan favorite 'Movin' Dave Meyer, who won the season opener at CMS, did much the same as he started 20th and raced hard to take 10th.
Young Wheeler, a second generation racer, started his racing career in the middle of last season. On CMS' last race night in 2002, he won his first-ever feature. After not having a good heat, Jesse 'the dealer' wasn't at the top of the 15 lap Street Stock feature, as he had to start 16th. The rest of the field should have taken note.
Being a 'hot number' at the start of this season, Clayton Campbell was working his way to the lead when he tangled with the initial first place car, sending him to the back of the pack. Roger Millward drove into the lead decisively on lap 6, but hard challenges from Cole Wimmer, ever popular Tammy Korff, jumpin' Joe Bradshaw and Steve Hammon made the duel a tight situation. Too tight.
On lap 7, Korff and Bradshaw were side by side coming out of turn two, came upon a lapped car, ran out of room and were involved in a high speed crash down the back-chute. Both Bradshaw and Korff's cars skidded along the top of the wall, then landed hard at the pit gate, right side up. Bradshaw was okay, and after a checkup by the EMT crew, Tammy was found to also be okay. Neither car was able to restart.
Millward, even though he was also caught up in a lapped traffic fracas, worked his way back up to the front again, but with a 'quiet' Wheeler by his side. The 'heads up' pilot made it to Hershel Thompson's twin flying checkers first, Millward second, Wimmer third, Clayton re-rushed back to fourth with 'the country singer', Charlie Palmer, nailed fifth.
To top off Wheeler's amazing night, he became tied with Campbell for the SS points lead.
The 15 lap Limited Late Model main had numerous yellow flag laps, causing time to hold the run to a 12 lap affair. Starting on the pole and heavily armed, the 'mountain man' took control from the start and beat his latest odds to never be seriously headed. Opening night winner Marc 'the dweeb' Carter came from sixth to finish second, the 'immaculate rookie', Daren Rapp, took third this time while team-mate and 2001 champ Bruce Curry was on his partner's tail in fourth, and after starting way back in 11th, former 'straight liner' Garry Billings, Jr. kept turning to the left for fifth.
Kenny Potter could have easily been the points leader after his win in the WOFC Sprint class, but a starter motor that let him down the week before, and out of that race, made his second victory of the year a ballast to advance back up the points list. The Chevalier brothers, Matt 'the hat' and 'let's go' Joe fought tooth and nail for their tight finish in the same order in second and third, fourth was found by Jimmy Garner and 'Dad' Danny Chevalier came across fifth.
The D&S Automotive Machine Shop's 'Buckner, Missouri Group' was on hand, headed by 'Doug and Doug'; Doug Mason and Doug Woody. Along with 'Doug and Doug' presenting the awards to the night's victors was Harrisonville's Jennifer Green.

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS

So where was the 'King of Street Stockers', John 'the boomer' Brooks? Like quite a few of the racers attended their family's high school graduations this week, the same was true for John. He later joined the front-chute crowd. Raymore's WOFC Sprint ace Kelly Potter also went to a graduation, but with race car attached. He showed up just in time for the 'A' feature, started 19th and finished 7th.
The admission prices for the 'Big One' rolling around this coming Saturday night marks the very first time that the admission prices have gone up since the Walls family took over the speed plant ten years ago. Many fans seemed to always ask, "How come you don't raise the prices for these specials?" All track owner Earl Walls had to say about it was, "I really don't like to have to raise any prices, but because of the insurance and other factors, we've had to do it for the 'big ones'. But, I still don't like it". If compared to other special events that run at weekly tracks throughout the Midwest, even with the raise, the fare still comes out at a 'basement bargain price' and is still 'lotsa' racin' bang for the buck'.
Eleven different winners in 12 features so far this year shows the competition is deep at CMS, but also it shows due to all four divisions having new points leaders after tonight's event.
Event sponsors D&S Automotive supplied so many program 'lucky number' prizes that it took most of the intermission to get them announced.
Kevin 'the kid' Coyne, married to beau Brandy last week, looked to be gaining on Evinger for a challenge to score his second LLM mian win of the year. But his car started slowing and he fell back to finish ninth. "I hope it's just a head gasket that popped," said the good natured driver, Coyne. "The engine got hot and we barely made it to the end. We'll see what we'll find when we tear the engine down."
In first two weeks of the 2003 season at CMS there were no "wheels up" situations. But that came to an end. During the second LLM heat, Kansas City, Kansan Buddy Blain flew over the third turn 'edge' and did one 'endo' followed by half a roll, landing the car on it's top. The car was badly crunched, but Buddy walked away. On the third lap of the WOFC Sprint go, Kansas City's Randy Badart spun down the front chute, tangled with an infield 'big tire' and the car fell over on its side. Randy shook it off, crawled out and the car, although not looking to be badly beaten, couldn't finish the event.
Jennifer Green, who handed out the winners hardware, is also the daughter of sprint winner Kenny Potter. Got to give dad his first place prize. Apropos.

All is well-prepared for this coming Saturday night's first 'Big One', the 7th Annual Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa "Memorial Modified Mayhem.' Gates will fly open at 5 pm, hot laps at 7 and the first qualifier flagged at 7:30. Admission will be Adults-$12, Sr. Citizens-#10, ages 6 thru 11-$8 and under 6, free. Pit passes will remain the same at $20.00. It is suggested that you arrive early for a good seat.

Tom;

A couple of questions for you. Why are they grading the track every week? Everytime a good groove seems to get built up they grade it off? Admittedly I'm a little biased because up from "UMP" territory near the St. Louis/Illinois tracks where they run the big block late models and where they rarely grade the track, however I'm not the only one who is wondering this. I overheard several conversations about why this is being done weekly instead of letting a nice cushion get built up from other fans in the stands. Second question would be why does Hershel "throw" the yellow flag for every little thing so "fast," sometimes he throws for a "developing" situation and then it all works out on the track. Now I'm in no way complaining, just curious about a few things. Even though I miss my UMP late models, I love watching the modifieds and think it's a great weekly show and I try to make it when I'm not off somewhere "racing" to the stands for some big money mid-west late model show. There have been many improvements since I started going to the "burg" a couple years back after being stationed to Whiteman AFB. Looking forward to at least 2 of the "big ones," I'll be gone for this weekend's race but I'll be there for sure for the others. Has Earl ever thought about trying to host an MLRA or MARS-sanctioned late model event there? I would love to see them on the track. I talk about it all the time hoping that someday it will happen. I think a lot of people out "west" here in MO are biased to the sprint cars but if they ever saw a real late model show they would be awestruck. I use my "back home area tracks" as an example, like Belleville, IL; Macon, IL; Pevely, MO; Highland, IL; Godfrey, IL; and Brownstown, IL. All of them are great big block late model show tracks, of which Belleville and Macon are smaller than the burg, but still run the "big boy late models." Just a few thoughts from a fan. I'll stop you and talk to you some night, I'm usually in some sort of Billy Moyer atire, hat or shirt and set just down to your right in front of the "Concordia" bunch.

Respectfully,
Sam
