Big Night for First Time Winners

Alan Miller

Central Missouri Speedway

May 20, 2006

(Warrensburg) The first event of the Contingency Connection weekly races produced a great field of cars in the Mighty Modified division during the KMMO race night at Central Missouri Speedway. Several first time feature winners visited victory lane with 78 drivers overall treating the race fans to some of the best dirt racing of the young season.

Brett Rollert won his first Limited Late Model feature of the year and his first victory ever of his driving career. Next off the line were the 305 Sprints with the young Josh Fisher gaining his second feature in a row at CMS and his third straight in his last three races. In the wild Street Stock division we had another first time feature winner with Jay Lyle taking the checkers. Lyle has been racing for 42 years in various types of cars and in the Street Stocks the past few years. Don Danner ran away with the B-Modified feature victory for what appeared to be his second win in a row in the Dean Wille owned car only to be disqualified later during the tech inspection. Wayne Stevens was then declared the winner for his second B-Mod feature of the year. The Mighty Modifieds put on another great show with the hot driver from Sedalia, Joe Bradshaw coming home with his first CMS Modified feature win of the year.

The Limited late Model race was a memorable event for Brett Rollert with his very first feature win of his career. He led the race from start to finish after a strong heat race win early in the evening. John Binning and Owen Evinger battled for second place on the track pushing high and low for a while with Binning finally taking the spot. Evinger ran a solid race after starting in the back of the field in the seventh. Steve Clancy left the track early after losing a tire over turn one and two in the heat race.

The 305 Sprint feature proved to be another strong night for young gun, Josh Fisher. This fine young driver is gaining some early season momentum at CMS. He did receive some early pressure from Rick Suhr, but Suhr flew over turn three after his steering broke and he had to go along for the ride. After flipping several times he landed on his wheels and walked away safely from his damaged Sprint car. After he left the track no one really challenged Fisher for the lead. It was also good to see seventeen-year old, Cristi Hoenshell finish strong in third place during her first Sprint event this year at CMS.

The wild Street Stock race started with John Ebert and the crowd favorite Tammy Korff in the lead working hard to hold off Gary Hemme and Jay Lyle. Hemme, a two time feature winner this year went quickly to the high side, but developed problems during a crash and had to leave the track early with a flat tire. Lyle and Marc Carter made it a crowd pleasing race with Carter attempting high and low passing before Lyle finally took the checkers. Carter pushed him all the way to the end attempting to pass him one final time, but Lyle held on. Wayne Harper also ran well after a start from the twelfth position to take a third place home. Korff and Ebert held on for a top five finish after their first heat race wins of the year. CMS also welcomed another female driver, Krystal Guy driving in her first Street Stock event this year.

The B- Modified main event produced another two time feature winner in an unexpected manner. Wayne Stevens showed some early challenges with Don Danner and appeared to finish second. The Mighty Modified Contingency Connection weekly A-feature event started with a strong field of twenty four cars after 35 cars were sorted out through 5 heat races into the starting grid. Joe Bradshaw, with some early season victories at Lakeside and State Fair Speedway, started on the pole and survived some hot drivers behind him attempting to make it a rough night. Brian Johnson ran strong up front before Bradshaw snatched the early lead. Jim Moody also pushed past Johnson later in the race with Dennis Walrath, a two time winner this year dropping out on lap 11 after his steering broke. Dean Wille also had some problems and left the track when he spun in turn three after a re-start. Justin Boney was challenging up front all night and looked to take a top three or four finish before leaving the track with a mechanical problem as well.

Two other drivers put on a great show with Dean Mahlstedt, a leading Southern Region USMTS driver coming from a twentieth starting position out of the B-Main to a fifth place finish. Also coming out of nowhere at the end of the race was Aaron Marrant from a nineteenth place start in the back of the pack to fourth. Many good local drivers had to fight up from the B-Main just to make the starting grid including Jason Thompson, Mahlstedt, Chad Lyle and Alan Deatherage. Heat races were just as exciting with some great finishes down to the wire fighting for the checkered flag. This should be a fabulous race next weekend for the first of three Mighty Modified Specials this year.
