Hammons Holds 'em Back Again, Joe Chevalier Scores Second WOFC Sprint Victory!</b>

Young Clint Dukes from Mayview, who changed his car's number that he always held, the 44d, in memory of the passing of friend and racing foe Lee Nevels, won his first-ever LLM feature event Saturday night by taking home the top honors in the 61 County/ Lee Nevels Memorial, 6th Annual "Limited Late Model Shootout" at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg.

Dukes, who had won many Street Stock titles in the past, moved up to the LLM division last season. However, it took added experience before he wound up winning one in an event that was the perfect one for him to do so. Points leader Kevin Coyne had to settle for second place after winning two weeks in a row. Third through fifth were Ryan Lovercamp, Jason King and Lance Elwell.

It only took four heat arces and one 'B' features to sort the mighty mods for their 20 lap, 24 car main event. Heat race winners were Steve Watkinson, Tim Karrick, Tom Charles and Dean Wille. 2001 CMS mod champ jimmy Dowell from Slater won the last chance 'B'.

With most thinking that they would not witness another exciting feature like they saw the previous week at CMS, found out it would happen even more so the very next week! The top three finishers came past the flying checkers as though set up in an overlap fashion in a car display at a 'World of Wheels' custom car show.

For Basehor, Ks' Karrick, his victory in the 20 circuit "Mighty Modified" main was his third consecutive triumph at CMS, which was also his third consecutive area win streak after the night-before win at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Ks. Most wouldn't let Karrick touch them after the finish, mainly because they were scared they would be badly burned. What's up with that? He's very, very hot right now!

Charles was the first 'over-lapper' in second with 6-time CMS mod champ Richard Layne a half car farther back in third. For the second week in a row, Jason 'trouble' Thompson had no room to try and pass so stayed in fourth with CMS multi-racer John 'the boomer' Brooks fifth.

It seemed as though Pleasant Hill's Steve 'scuba' Hammons just stepped back in his car and did it again as he easily outdistanced, for the second week in a row, the rest of the Street Stocks to the checkered flag. It was Hammons third, CMS seasonal win. Fleeing up from the starting pack's back was Clayton Campbell for second, third was copped by early leader Johnny Ebert, 'Street Stock King' Brooks, now in his 'fendered' mount, rushed up from way back in 20th to fourth while fifth was collected by sophomore standout Cole Wimmer.

Belton's Joe Chevalier had to work hard for five laps to get by Kelly Potter for his resultant second WOFC Sprint victory of the year. Kelly clamped onto second, cousin Kenny moved up to a final third, fourth was garnered by Jimmy Garner and Dan 'dad' Chevalier followed in fifth. It was the third time this year that the speedy sprints ran the entire 15 circuits with nary a yellow. But, on the first start try they did suffer a red flag when Belton's Bobby Bogue flipped his car hard in turn two. Bobby was okay, his car was badly bent.

CMS was once again proud to have 61 Country's representative, singer and songwriter Carlene Hall attending to sing the National Anthem, then later hand out the winner's hardware in the Victory Circle.

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS

What many didn't realize about 'Fast" Richard was that he had big problems with his car all night long. "We blew all of the water out of the top of the engine in the heat race," the 6-time CMS champ Layne explained. "We came out to run the feature for a lap or two then pull off, just to try and keep our points up in the top ten. But when we had a yellow flag the first time, the engine cooled right down. We'd run a while and it'd get hot again, but we always got enough yellow flag to cool it back down. The timing of everything was just right." A third place in what started to be a short night for the Hunt/ Layne team was a stroke of good luck for once.

Those chances to win the ready-to-race WOFC sprint car are still selling well. They'll continue to have them available every race night, with the final round of selling the raffle tickets, $2 per chance or $5 for three, on Miller Lites' WOFC Sprint Car Rumble on July 12th. You get to see that sprinter you may own in every race proghram during intermission when it tours the track.

Was saddened to learn that long-time racing supporter Lyle Stafford from Lee's Summit passed away Saturday night. No one can ever forget all the things he did over the years, starting back in the late 50's driving a push jeep at Olympic and Riverside Stardiums like no one else ever did, or probably never will again. Most of the time he drove the "Herb's D-X" jeep. In fact, a lot of people always called him Herb. Lyle was always around at the right time to pitch in, and was always on the scene when someone in the racing family needed the support, and not just at the track. He frequently came by CMS on race nights the last ten or so years. Lyle, his very recognizable voice, cigars and friend 'Lord Calvert', will be sorely missed by all.

Tom;

Great write-up as usual. I must say that the last few weeks there has been an overwhelming amount of water down low both in 1-2 and 3-4. I know I'm not alone on my feelings about this now as there were many around me who were saying the same thing. It makes for a boring one-groove track when it is so wet and it caused several accidents Saturday night. I hope that the water problem can get resolved soon, myself and many other fans in the stands want to see side-by-side action all night, not just for the features. A little dry-slick never hurt anyone, obviously a dry slick track with rubber on it would be a quick track too with multiple grooves. I think some of the fans at the 'burg would probably be upset if they seen a dry-slick track but I've seen some great racing in the midwest on tracks that slicked over towards the features. As always the mods ruled and the car count for the Lim LMs was great, would like to see that continue. See you at the races.

Respectfully,
Sam
