Dustin Boney, Bob King and Scotty Martin Continue Winning Ways as Veteran Herb Dannar Races His Way to First-Ever Feature Victory at Central Missouri Speedway!

On an unusually cool Midwest summer evening at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS), 77 drivers signed in to compete during “Better Country” KIX 105.7 FM Radio Race Night. The racing program featured the ‘mighty’ modifieds, ULMA late models, street stocks and b-modifieds competing in a total of 14 races, which included 10 qualifying heat races and four main events.

Shawnee, Kansas driver Joshua Jacobs got the racing action underway ‘Burg by taking his second b-modified heat race win of the year ahead of Jeremy Lile and D.J. DeMotte. Dominant driver Scotty Martin of Independence, Missouri bested heat race two for his eighth heat win of the year ahead of Michael Mullins and Billy Roberts. In the third and final heat it was Brian “Ziggy” Ziegler of Bates City in command for his fifth heat victory of the year ahead of Bubba Kline and Tyler Lewis. With 25 cars in attendance the b-modifieds had the best car count of the night with 24 of the 25 cars able to start the 15-lap feature event. Although Jacobs would have been on the pole position for the main event, he elected to start tailback in the race allowing Ziegler and Martin to start on the front row. It took three tries before competition laps could be scored as several cars were eliminated from the event early on due to various mechanical problems in the caution-filled race. Up front, Ziegler and Martin battled for the lead with young driver Jeremy Lile just behind in third. As he’s done so many times this year Martin was able to grab the point from Ziegler and looked like he would sail on to another victory. Meanwhile, Lile had other plans and began putting heavy pressure on Martin for the lead using the high line. Tricky conditions off of corner number two saw the leaders using separate racing lines with Martin down low and Lile up high. It was a battle of young aggression and cool-under-pressure veteran driving for the lead for the next several laps with Lile eventually grabbing the lead from Martin. A late-race caution flag flew for spinning cars off of turn two and the field was realigned for the restart. Ziegler was able to come back to second after Martin disposed of Lile on the restart and appeared to be capable of getting around Martin until contact with Lile put a stop to his charge. In the end Ziegler recovered for second but ran out of time to run down Scotty Martin who raced to his tenth feature victory of the year. Behind Ziegler it was Lile in third, Johnny Ebert with his best finish of the year in fourth, Lucas Isaacs fifth and Tyler Lewis sixth.

The street stock division can always be relied on for some of the best racing of the night and once again the 16 drivers on hand treated the fans to some exciting action. Up-and-coming driver Joey Hotmer of Odessa, Missouri looked impressive in his new ride and picked up his first heat race win of the year ahead of Tammy Korff and former track champion Wayne Harper, who made his first race appearance of the year. Veteran Herb Dannar of Holden, Missouri held back Nathan Himes and Brian Johnson in the second qualifying heat for his fifth heat race triumph of 2007. The second heat race turned out to be a preview of things to come at the conclusion of the 15-lap main event as Hotmer and Dannar led the field to turn one at the start of the race with Dannar immediately taking command. By lap four, Himes moved to the runner-up position from his fourth-starting spot with point’s leader Brian Johnson in third. After a lap four restart, Johnson found himself on the infield and re-started the race tailback as Dannar continued to lead Himes. By lap 12, Johnson made his way all the way back to fourth behind Chad Eickleberry in third. Eickleberry looked like he may challenge for the win but a late-race, chain-reaction incident on a re-start as Dannar brought the field to the green at a slow rate of speed ended his chances as he was forced to exit with a flat tire. Himes did all he could do to put his nose on the inside of Dannar off of turn two but could not make the move stick. Himes himself ended up having his hands full as Johnson closed in on him late in the race in a classic battle for second. In the end Herb Dannar, father of last week’s big-money street stock winner Donnie Dannar, was able to find victory lane for his first-ever feature race victory over Johnson, Himes, Harper, Jeff Lazenby and Hotmer.

Sixteen late models competed in two qualifying heats during the early portion of race program. Jason Estes was able to hold back Fred King and James Rutledge for his fifth heat win of the year in race number one while Bob King, the winningest driver this year in the lates too his seventh heat race checkered flag over Jon Binning and Chad Frewaldt. Estes and King led the field to the main event green flag with Estes quickly going to the front ahead of King and Rutledge. After an early race spin by Danny Monroe, the field was regrouped and on the ensuing restart on the backstretch several cars were involved in an extremely unnecessary and unfortunate incident for many drivers. Second place in the point’s standings Steven Clancy, David Angell, Ed Griggs, Chad Frewaldt, Jamie Wineland and Josh Green were all caught up in the incident. With the field now narrowed down to nine cars Estes again went back to work trying to fend off many heavy challenges from Bob King. Brett Wood’s night came to an end as a result of contact with the turn two tires and again on the re-start King darted to the outside of Estes to try and grab the lead. He couldn’t make the move stick and Estes again held his lead. Monroe brought out a late-race caution and was unable to continue on just as the battle for fourth began heating up between Binning and Brett Rollert; the two swapped positions several times with Rollert eventually securing a fourth-place run ahead of Binning. Rutledge, who quietly rode in third position had a birds-eye view of the Estes and King battle for the win right to the checkered flag as King pulled off a daring low-line pass on Estes and took the win at the line for his seventh feature win of the year and fourth in a row. Estes crossed the line in second with Rutledge third, Rollert fourth, a smooth driving Danny Lorton in fifth and Binning rounding at the top six.

Twenty of the fiercest ‘mighty’ modified competitors in the Midwest soared around the CMS high banks in the premiere division in three hotly contested heat races. Grabbing his third heat-race win of the year in heat one was Tom Charles of Bonner Springs, Kansas ahead of Kyle Westerhold and Curt Potter. Another heavy hitter from the Kansas side, Tim Karrick of Basehor, bested Donnie Dannar and Aaron Marrant in heat two as Dustin Boney, also from Kansas raced his way to victory lane in heat three ahead of Jim Cameron and point’s leader Joe Walker. Like they’ve done so many times before over the years at CMS, Charles and Karrick started side-by-side on the front row for the 20-lap feature race with Boney and Westerhold just behind them at the drop of the green flag. Karrick made his way to the front in hopes of securing another feature win ahead of Charles and Boney. An early race caution flag forced a re-start as the lead trio tried to check out on the remaining competitors behind them. By lap ten, last week’s winner in the street stock division, Donnie Dannar, who jumped back in his modified, was the guy to watch as he moved to the front on the high side from his fifth-starting position. Another driver on the move was Dustin Boney, who took over second place from Charles and started to reel in Karrick for the lead. Joe Walker, who started in ninth, was another driver on the move through the field as by lap 11 he was able to gain several spots ahead of Westerhold and Marrant with Charles slipping back to fifth. On lap twelve, off of corner number four Karrick was caught up behind lapped traffic as he watched Dustin Boney sail on by to the outside to grab the lead. Dannar continued his impressive run late into the race and was also able to get by Karrick, who scraped the wall down the front straightaway to lose second. Walker continued his charge to the front as well and made his way to fourth late in the event. Once Boney was out front there was no stopping him from picking up his second CMS feature victory of the year ahead of a fast-closing Dannar in second. Karrick held on for third ahead of Walker in fourth, Charles fifth, Marrant sixth, Potter seventh and Jim Moody in eighth.
