"KMMO Radio AM-FM Kids Race Night" was not only a massive program, but a very hot one both on and off the track Saturday night at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg.

Still battling for championship laurels in the Farm and Home of Warrensburg/T-Mobile Mighty Modifieds as he has all season, Alan 'Mr. I.G.A.' Deathergae from Concordia drove a 'perfect' race to capture his second, seasonal feature event over the fastest mod competitors this season. Had it not been a flawless run for Deatherage, it could have easily been another front racer in the winner's circle. His current points lead was boosted up a few notches against his main rival, Jason 'trouble' Thompson.

Now solidly getting the feel of turning left at the end of two straight-aways, former drag racer Garry Billings, Jr. from Kansas City, Kansas actually found a way to get around the nearly invincible Kevin 'kid' Coyne. For Billings, his wins have now come to two.

Right back in the winner's circle again were rookie Artie Lett from Odessa in the Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint car, 15 lap feature and the red-hot Clayton 'Cool' Campbell from Sedalia in the Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stocks.

Again the Mighty Mods filled more than 50% of the 4 classes in the pits, and again it took 6 qualifiers and 2 'B' features to find the 24 starters in the 25 lap main event.

While James McMillin, Deathergae, 'Fast' Richard Layne, Jimmy Morris, Tom Charles and Tim 'Blue Bunny' Karrick pulled in the heat race wins, Olathe's Robbie Kluender and Willard's Brandon Maggard copped the twin last-chance runs.

The starting spot for Deatherage, being the outside of the front row, helped him to attain the first-turn lead in front of other chargers running four wide by 5 rows deep. The track surface, expertly holding plenty of moisture on the 90 degree plus night, opened up a vista of grooves for the top-drawer comps.

While Alan's car was handling perfectly and he was able to find his own quick-groove, Dean Wille, Richard Layne, Bobby Layne, Tom Charles, Chad Lyle and Tim Karrick searched the surface for their best spots. The fight of the night for position was between 'Fast' Richard and 'rooster' Charles. Layne held fast to second while Charles tried every trick in the book to get around him.

With only three yellow flags in the entire affair at the start, 18 of the 24 starters came across the checkers with Deathergae leading for $1,000, Layne was a close second with $900, $800 went to Charles and his third place ending, Chad Lyle was able to advance from 14th to fourth and $700 while Wille was up front for fifth and $600.

Rounding out the top ten were 'B' winner Maggard in sixth after starting way back in 20th($500), the 'Blue Bunny' seventh ($450), eighth to Jason Thompson ($400), ninth was all 'Movin' Dave Meyer's ($350) and 'Mr. Experience' Layne was held to tenth ($300).

For Billings in the LLM's, he drove the low groove while Coyne kept his course two-third's up. The position let Garry get by on lap 10 of the 15 circuit drive. Coyne kept hois points lead strong by distancing the rest for second, Ryan Lovercamp put on another last to front show by coming out third, Clint Dukes was back in action for fourth while Lance Elwell came up to fifth.

With Lett and Campbell, the lead and resultant wins were flag to flag. Street Stock finishers in the first five were top rookie Fred King, Steve 'scuba' Hammons, Marc 'the dweeb' Carter and Scott Dukes. Kenny Potter, 'cuz' Kelly Potter, Jimmy Garner and Dan Chevalier were the trailers in that order behind Lett in the Sprints.

In addition to the 19 events put on by 85 cars, there were 10 events in 10 categories for the kid's foot race. Nine of the ten winners, classes and hometowns unknown, were Devon Holland, Teyler Cope, Ramsey Pine, Brendan Galloway, Brett Ortega, Mark Gibson, Erika Evans, Beau Rothwell and Genevieve Rothwell.

A very special singer, Lori Reid-Price from Marshall, who appears frequently in Branson and is a musician who can play 6 different instruments, beautifully sang the National Anthem before the action was started.

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS

It was proven Saturday night that the CMS track maintenance crew is keeping the track in moist, fast shape in total control, with the roughness now gone. There were probably very few dirt tracks, if any, that had the tack-fast moisture still there when all the action was over on a 100 degree-plus day and a 90's night.

KMMO Radio, broadcasting from Marshall had many, many reps on hand. Live call-ins took place from 5 to 6:30 pm before the Chiefs came on and Bobby Layne, Tom Charles, Kevin Coyne, Tim Karrick and Earl Walls were the interviewees. Helping hand out the winner's laurels from KMMO en-mass included Jacqueline and Elizabeth Galloway, Susan Perkins and Stephanie Stark.

Tim 'Blue Bunny' Karrick held true to his racin' nickname as he handed out all kinds of ice cream treats during the evening. Ice cream by one of his top sponsors, of course, Blue Bunny. Now ya know if ya didn't before.

It was wonderful to be able to meet face to face a well liked person who is always on the racing websites, known as 'Raisin'. Her young son, Dakota, who is one of the biggest racing fans in the Midwest even though he suffers serious health problems, was not able to attend but you could tell he was there by heart; many hearts. 'Raisin' traveled over 500 miles from Thunder Lake, Iowa to attend both CMS, and Lakeside the night before. One of Dakota's and 'Raisin's' most favorite racers, Tom Charles, had her pitside both nights. And that again definitely proves that it's a big, big part of what 'the racing family' is all about.

This has got to be a very special year for the 'Street Stock King', John 'the boomer' Brooks. Special, only due to the fact that it has to be his worst, with all coming from the 'bad luck' side. Brooks, who has won 15 championships at CMS and 25 total at tracks in the state of Missouri, has been hit with car failures almost race to race. Being as great a mechanic as he is a driver, it's almost beyond belief. Let's hope he shakes it soon. He had the lead Saturday… for half a lap! His mount let him down again.

For the fifth time in six years, the "Good Old Time Racing Association" will be added as the fifth class of racers in a more than full program next Saturday night. The cars they run are the 'real deal, all-steel' 1950's competition coupe and sedans. More than 20 of the special racers are expected. Gate, race times and admission prices are the same as the weekly fare.
