Charles Captures Mighty-Mod 'A',…. Finally!; "Scuba" Hammons Dives to Fourth Street Stock Win in CMS' "Pepsi Race Night #2"!

Lett Sprints, Coyne Supplies LLM Ponderosa Steaks in Main event Wins!

Warrensburg, Missouri

The racing scene at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg was once again exciting Saturday night during "Pepsi Race Night #2". It was also a bit surprising due to it's admittedly rough and very tough 20 events on it's very different, super-fast albeit tricky hi-banked clay oval..

"It was a matter of survival," said Bonner Springs' Ks' Tom Charles, after finally winning his first 2003 Farm and Home/T-Mobile Mighty Modified 24 car, 25 lap feature event. "I didn't have the car set right because the track wasn't what I thought it would be. And, I gotta say there was just a lot of good luck for me in that race, too."

Seven different top-notch drivers lead, then fell by the wayside throughout the race. Following home Charles and his $1000 payoff was earlier leader Charlie Laizure with $900, $800 was well earned by mid-pack starter Jason Thompson in third, the fourth place award of $700 was by experienced vet racer Marcus Dyer while the $600 fifth place lucre was driven in hard by 19th starting racer Alan Deatherage. The top three spots in the six qualifying heats saw winners Charlie Ebert, Bobby Layne, Charles, Chad Lyle, Richard Layne and Tim Karrick start the feature in the best spots.

To find the six additional starters it took double 'B' mains, that were won by fast haulin Concordian Deatherage and Slater's Jimmy Dowell.

Country Kitchen Limited Late Model ace Kevin 'kid' Coyne from Blue Springs almost didn't even make it to the track to run this week. He had his engine break badly the week before, and was so far behind in fixing it he had to put his driver's suit on before he left home then was able to make it to the heat race line just before it started. He won that qualifier, then turned around and collected his seventh feature victorty for the year to hold his points lead. The fans, especially the ones who picked up their CMS weekly racing program, were happy too. His win on this night made an advertising coupon inside the program, featuring his major sponsor Ponderosa Steakhouse in Blue Springs, valid for a free steak dinner this week!

There for the second time was Basehor's John Baker, who ran up to a close second, Ijm Wilson hustled from last to third, fourth was pinned-down by Lance Elwell while vet driver Buddy Blain got fifth.

Pleasant Hill's Steve 'Scuba' Hammons had been absent in the winner's circle the past few weeks after capturing three Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stock main affairs earlier this year. He finally got back to that spot with a fourth victory. He well outdistanced back starter Marc 'the dweeb' Carter who drove all the way through traffic for second, Johnny Ebert faded a bit to third, Fred King was still strong in fourth and Wayne Harper had his best night of the year with fifth.

Rookie wonder Artie Lett from Odessa proved that his first-ever win in the Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprints two weeks ago was not a fluke. He led wire to wire to win the 'yellow-flag-less main by over half a lap.

Four time winner Kenny Potter broke away from the pack and tried to catch the youngster but had to be happy with second, Dan Chevalier was third, Jimmy Garner was again consistent with fourth and another Chevalier, Matt 'the hat', wound up fifth.

BITS FROM THE CMS PITS

No doubt about it, the new track prep ideas only worked about half-way to the goal the CMS crew tried to reach. It held moisture very well all night, was fast even at the start of the hot laps, but it was way too 'loose'. "We disked the surface way too deep," commented track official Troy Walls. "We turned the track over twice at about four feet deep this week, and we watered the track too much. We're going to disk much shallower after we set the contour and we pretty well know now how much water to apply, and when." The track looked great and stable at the start of the warm-ups, but came apart several times. Quick re-grades twice helped make it bearable. When they get the right combination to improve it's surface, it'll be even better than before the rejuvenation. In the meantime, the ones that won knew enough about what you have to do to 'set your groove' in the 'rough'. They've experienced the same thing many times at many places in the past. Quoting Limited Late Model seven time winner and points leader Kevin Coyne, "When you have a track like that, you've just got to slow down a bit to go faster." How true.

It was most pleasant to have Pepsi rep Dave Hecker on hand to help co-ordinate the "Pepsi Race Night #2". Having been the 'trophy queen' clear back in 1989, Dave and Judy's daughter returned to do it again, now proudly named Lauren (Hecker) Milton.

Was nice to find out that local NASCAR driver and media ace Scott Traylor was on hand, and actually got there before the races started! Also in attendance was the designer and creator of many of the best racing websites around this area, Liberty's Jeff Nevins, better known PC-wise as OutlawJN. Both seemed to well understand the variations that dirt tracks can get them selves in to. Hey, who knows, maybe some day soon Traylor may really like dirt racin' better than Asphalt…… …..Naaahhhh, never happen!

Also there is a long-time friend of mine, who did many things in racing for many years, John Biggs, his son Trey and a lot of his ever-expanding family. John was leader of the 1970's Midwest Modified Sprint Association, official at many tracks as well as a scoring and statistics recorder.

This coming Saturday night's program, carded as 'Bud Racing Night', will start at the same times with the same admission fee, still paying the biggest weekly Modified purse in the nation.
