TWIN MOD WINS FOR DEATHERAGE, BROOKS BREAKS BAD LUCK IN STREETS ON GOOD OLD TIME RACE NIGHT AT CMS!

Dan Chevalier, Coyne Cop Sprint and Limited LM's, Oklahoma's Long in Coupes!

by Tom Wilson-pma

Warrensburg, Missouri

It made no difference to Concordia's "I.G.A. Man" Alan Deatherage as to whether the track surface at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg was in it's normal, 'fast tack' condition or Saturday night's very rare dry-slick, black streak track surface. Two Saturday's ago Deatherage turned in a perfect run for a victory in the Farm and Home of Warrensburg/T-Mobile Mighty Modifieds on the norm, then did it again this week on a track that was totally the opposite. Alan's performance score for 2003 at CMS is three wins, the last two consecutive, with a now slightly larger championship points lead.

Kevin 'kid' Coyne from Blue Springs was bested the week before, but returned with his ninth, Country Kitchen Limited Late Model win this week. He out-drove last week's winner Garry Billings, Jr., who had to accept second this time around.

The "King of Street Stocks", Warrensburg's John 'the boomer' Brooks, who has recorded 15 championships in the Missouri Beef Industries Council division, has had by far his worst bad-luck season ever. Defending his CMS 2002 championship, John won this season's opener, but it took 16 more race nights to return to victory circle again. He accomplished the win by leading from start to finish.

It appeared that Odessa's rookie driver Artie Lett had bagged his fourth-in-a-row Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint car victory, fifth for the season. But the after-race tech check showed that he was running methanol alcohol, illegal in the gasoline powered division. He was disqualified from the finish and the win went to Dan Chevalier from Belton, which punched his seasonal wins to two.

For the fifth time in six years, the Good Old Time Racing Association Coupes and Sedans held their popular, 1950's type of racing with hot competition. Even though most of the drivers hailed from Nebraska and Iowa, Stillwell, Oklahoma's Hank Long drove his beautiful and immaculate 1935 five-window Ford coupe to victory in the 12 lap main event.

The six qualifying heats for the mods were won by Tim 'Blue Bunny' Karrick, Tracy 'Country Boy' Wolf, 'Mr. Experience' Bobby Layne, Deatherage, Chargin' Charlie Ebert and "Fast" Richard Layne.

The final six to qualify for the 24 car, 25 lap main were Danny Charles from Bonner Springs in the J.C. Carter Sandblasting 'B' and in the Bill Sharp's Bar-B-Que second 'last chance' race it was Walnut Grove's J.D. Kelly.

At the start of the Modified topper Karrick and Wolf ran side by side, lap after lap with Karrick 'on the edge', Wolf on the pole. Deatherage took position down the middle and watched the challengers until lap 6 when he zipped by both for the lead. Other top runners including Jason Thompson, Bobby and Richard Layne and Charlie Ebert repeatedly swapped spots back and forth with Karrick and Wolf. While this constantly took place, Terry 'the terminator' Schultz went as high on the high-banked, third-mile clay oval as allowed and knocked down a position lap after lap.

With five laps to go after moving to second from an eleventh place start, Schultz gained ground on solid leader Deatherage and brought the fans to their feet when he literally pushed the winner across the final stripe. As it is during the standard weekly shows, Deatherage took his $1K in cash, Schultz was still happy with $900, Karrick re-rallied for third and $800, 700 bucks was pulled in by Thompson and driving super-hard from the 'B ' tehn starting way back in 21st, Iola, Ks' Mike Folk collected $600 for fifth. The top ten was capped by Wolf ($500), Tom Charles ($450-after starting 15th), Richard Layne ($400), Clay Langley, Jr. ($350) and Ebert ($300).

Brooks' victory was sweet compared to what has happened all this season, and his lead, from green to checkered, was unchallenged. Hot rookie Street Stock racer Fred King was second, points leader Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler held third, Steve Hammons wound up fourth and Steve Cope copped fifth.

The first start of the LLM race was a bit on the crazy side, setting pole-starter Shawn Williams on the sidelines after hard contact. Coyne was able to command the lead and the resultant win starting just a half-lap into the fray. The finish was a definite reversal of last week's final flag finish as Garry Billing, Jr. was second this time, third went to Jim Wilson, Steve Clancy, driving a 'borrowed' Jason King car captured fourth while the 'mountain boy', Owen Evinger, was a tight fifth.

Dan 'dad' Chevalier's inherited WOFC Sprint win was his second for the year, Jimmy Garner was consistent as always with a strong secopd, third 'go Joe' Chevalier, Kelly Potter rounded up fourth while Jason "Bull Dog' McCrackin bullied his way to fifth.

Following the 'Oklahoman' Long across the 1950's style finish flag were John Furgeson, Bruce Harberts, Ron Stohlmann and Larry Aldrich.

Trophy presenters for the Good Old Time evening of racing were youngsters; Marsha Moon, Ashley Walls and Taylor Walls.

CMS BITS FROM THE PITS

It was officially announced by track owner and director Earl Walls Saturday night that Hobby Stocks will be added to the weekly card for the season. After that announcement, racin' rumor spread that another of the classes will be dropped. Any judgment to that effect has not been announced. "We feel that the class offers a more economical way to get into racing. It's a way for beginners to learn the rules of racing and is a good family oriented sport that mom and dad can get involved in without having to take out a loan on the house," Earl pointed out. The rules for the cars, front wheel drive stockers, will be exactly the same as the innovators of the class, L.A. Raceway in LaMonte. Many of the over 35 runners already competing in that division at the new and successful, Friday night speed-plant will now have a close-by, second night to race. Rules and other details will be coming forth soon. "I think that LA Raceway came up with a great idea," Walls ended.

Company LJS Graphics had a crowd on hand for the event. The firm, headed by Loretta Nichols, produces art, printing, printing plates and other top-notch graphics services.

Speaking of 'Racin' Rumors. Walls heard from one observer that the word was out that CMS will not run Mighty Modifieds next year! Ya gotta be kidding! The "Home of the Mighty Modifieds" will NOT run Modifieds next year? The track premier class? Earl called me up on the radio and told me to squelch the rumor forthright and center. I had a hard time doing that though, 'cause I was LMAO (only PC internet people know what that means!).

There were a few misprints in the program this week. Since Kevin 'kid' Coyne won again for the ninth time, free steak dinners are again good if you show the ad to them from the CMS "Track Report" program. The wrong date was called out in the Blue Springs Ponderosa Steakhouse ad as the expiration time. It is goo dthrough August 30th. Also, it calls out the rules meeting next January as taking place on January 15th. It should have listed it as January 17th, as always, a Saturday.

We really had some super-special trophy cars on hand for the Old Time night. Fifties style T-Bucket Custom cars reminded me of Ray Farhner's Custom Shows; it even brought back echoes of uncle Ray's distinctive voice. There'll be a show much like that on the 27th of September at the Blue Ridge Mall, titled as the 2nd Annual "Show and Shine" by Cowtown TS promotions headed by Gary Hotchkin, whose rod delivered the trophy gals after each feature. Two other super-nice custom machines were there, owned by Howard Anderson and Don Bird. Nice!

Bobby Layne suddenly pulled out of the feature after running up front. One of his stabilizer bars broke and came up and whacked his left elbow. It hurt so bad, the pit crew had to help him out of the car. Last word was that nothing was broken….on Bobby, that is! He'll be sore for a while. I was hit real hard on my crazy bone once, hurt like heck, but everything was okay after checking…. my head. Or so they said!

Mark Evinger, LLM ace from Bates City, is one who always helps others in time of needs in the pits, and otherwise. Now he'd like to publicly thank all of the help he got from drivers ands mechanics in all the classes to help him get 'back on track' with their help two weeks ago. "That's why I like to race at CMS. A hell of a good bunch of guys," said the 'Mountain Man'.

The third and final 'Big One' for 2003 at CMS, carded as the 6th Annual "Missouri Modified Mania", takes place this coming Saturday night. For more information about the events, rules and all other information at CMS, call the 'Track Report' at 660.747.2166 or log-in at:
