midget racer
Open Wheeler
i have always said (refer to the other threads related to this subject)that i have no dog in this fight. it is good reading, and i am a fan of most all types of racing, incl. this type. so, let me tell a true story. this actually did happen, and i was one of many witnesses 1st hand. year would be 1974 i believe. dad was running usac with his midget, an edmunds sesco, which at the time was THE thing to have. to satisfy the sponsor, the local cadillac dealer, we ran 6 races with SLARA, the local midget organization, with a very young and talented danny frye , jr. as the driver. not taking anything away from the SLARA guys, but they didnt have the equipment to match dad's sesco.of the 6 races we ran, we won 4, finished 2nd , qnd on the last race on the half mile fairgrounds track, danny was lapping cars in hot laps.. it was obvious who had the fastest car, by far. came time for the 1st heat, we pushed out, and by that time ALL of the other competitors had banded together and refused to run against that car. no-one would even push out for the heat. so; no cars(except one, ours) to race, no race. they were stuck tight in their ******* action. dad withdrew the car(it was the last race we were gonna run anyway) and the races went on, with us as spectators. there was nothing cheated up on our car, it was just that much clearly better than the other cars. it was like comparing a cessna to a f-15 fighter. point is, if the sportsman drivers are THAT CONVINCED that there are 1 or 2 cars that clearly cannot be beat, band together and refuse to race against it. force the track to do something. you cannot have a race with 1 or 2 cars. its just that simple, but it does take a unified commitment.if you are that sure, take a stand. anything less is not effective. sorry for the long post. art.
