First-ever Win for Lovercamp, More for 'Let's Go' Chevalier and 'Cool' Campbell!

Warrensburg, Missouri

After trekking to Boone, Iowa to compete this week in his favorite heritage series of racing, the U.S. Modified Super-Nationals, Bonner Springs, Kansan Tom 'rooster' Charles raced all week but suffered bad luck and blown engines. He back-tracked to Central Missouri Speedway Saturday night to battle for the top dollars in the $22,000 plus purse in the 7th Annual "Missouri Modified Mania". His 'regular ride' stuck the valves, he begged son Danny Charles to borrow and run his old mount, in which he won 7 features at CMS last season, had to borrow a driver's uniform when his wouldn't zip-up, then went out and decisively won the 40 lap, 24 car main event to pocket first place and $2,000.

Tim 'Blue Bunny' Karrick followed Charles' suit, also returned from Boone after scoring some good finishes all week, started 18th in the main and rushed up front to second and $1,500.

'Cool' Clayton Campbell from Sedalia had won 8 features so far in the Missouri Beef Industries Council, but was minus an engine at the previous CMS show and had to sit out a week. He came back 'powerized' again and pulled in his ninth, seasonal victory.

Joe Chevalier was tied for top victories at four in the Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa WOFC Sprint car ranks, but then didn't win one since his last win in middle July. He came back convincingly to win his fifth.

Young Ryan Lovercamp from Concordia had finished in the top five during the Country Kitchen Limited Late Model runs, but his fanciful and spectacular 'slideways all the way' style didn't cop him a win until this week. It was his first-ever victory in his short racing career.

It took the most qualifying events ever to sort out the top 24 cars to compete in the 40 lap championship event.

Rodger Peck, 'Smokin' Joe Walker, 'Fast' Richard Layne, Jamie Raglund, Charles and Jess Folk won the six, 10 lap qualifying heats. Moving to the main event throught the three 'last chance' 'B's were New Hampton's Steve Starmer, Jason 'trouble' Thompson from Concordia and current CMS Modified points leader Alan 'Mr. IGA' Deatherage, also from the 'beer city'.

The track surface was immaculately smooth and fast in the 'big one'. With only three, short yellow flags the entire way, most at the head of the run, the championhsip was the swiftest ever recorded.

'Fast' Layne took the intial lead, but was 'overcome' by Charles in the borrowed car on lap six. Karrick rushed up from his back-starting spot but had to work double-time as he and Joe Cobb ran side-by-side, lap after lap. Layne and Jess Folk ran close vying for second while Charles kept his distance in the lead, and for the $2K triumph.

Karrick went wheel to wheel with Layne to cop second and $1,500, Iola, Ks Folk found third at the end for $1000, $900 went to 'Fast' Richard and Cobb was super-strong in fifth for $800. Rounding out the top ten for the heavy lucre were Jeremy Chambers from Yates City, Ks ($700), 'trouble' Thompson, now the LA Raceway Modified champion for this season ($600), Steve Watkinson ($500), Raglund ($450) and Chad 'the gator' Lyle ($400).

In the first 'B' feature, Leeton's Tracy 'country boy' Wolf made a big move to try and take second place to make the 'A' but was involved in a very scary hit on the end of the back straight wall at full speed. The car was severely damaged. Luckily, Tracy was able to walk away after some slight recovery time.

It was obvious that the 'King of Street Stocks', John 'the boomer' Brooks still had things going his way. He charged from mid-field to challenge Campbell hard and finished second on the leader's tail. Dan Colhour, points leader Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler, and second in points Steve Hammons capped the top five in that order.

Limited Late Model points leader Kevin 'kid' Coyne was caught up in a front-chute pi;e-up early, knocking him out of contention. Concordia's Lovercamp slid by early main leader Mike 'trucker' Brockert on lap four to find victory lane for the first time. Brockert held for second, Shawn Williams pounced on third, Clint Dukes was fourth while Marc 'the dweeb' Carter came from the back to fifth.

Joe Chevalier's victory was well earned as he had to outsprint his major foe Kenny potter, 'dad' Danny Chevalier, consistent Jimmy Garner and 'cuz' Kelly Potter.

The final event of 2003 for CMS will take place this Saturday night as 'Miller Lite 2003 Season Championship/ Fan Appreciation Night'. There are no pre-won crowns heading into this final racing program, and the champs won't be known until Hershel Thompson's final checkered flag for 2003 is thrown.
