BEAR LAKE, PA – April 1, 2010 – Chub Frank's late-March road trip with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ended with an up-and-down 'Texas Two-Step' weekend.
The veteran standout from Bear Lake, Pa., performed best on March 27 at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, finishing a solid eighth in the 50-lap WoO LMS A-Main. That run helped him head home without the bitter taste of his bad-luck 16th-place finish in the previous evening's 'Lone Star 50' at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas.
"We had a tough night at Battleground, but it wasn't a bad weekend for us," said Frank, who competed in Texas following finishes of fifth and ninth in the March 19-20 WoOLMS events in Florida and Georgia. "We made some strides with our cars."
After spending the off-days between the Southeastern and Texas swings traveling along the Gulf Coast – including a mid-week visit to Bourbon Street in New Orleans – Frank unloaded his Rocket Chassis Chevrolet Impala SS No. 1* at Battleground Speedway buoyed by additional sponsorship support from Crown Drilling, LLC. The logo of the Ohio-based company, which first appeared on the panels of Frank's car at last year's World 100, was added to Frank's machine for the Texas doubleheader after the firm's president, John Morrison, told Frank that he would be in the Houston area on business and wanted to come see 'Chubzilla' in action.
Unfortunately, Frank was stymied in Battleground's 'Lone Star 50' by broken power steering. He started ninth but slipped backward with handling problems and ultimately lost seven laps while his crew tried to fix his car after he was involved in a lap-21 tangle.
Frank, 48, came out strong in the first WoO LMS event since 2004 at Lone Star Speedway, turning the sixth-fastest lap in time trials at the big half-mile oval. A third-place finish in his heat race left him with another ninth-place starting spot and he ran a smooth, steady race, improving one position to finish eighth.
"We pulled our other car out (at Lone Star) because we figured we'd wait until we got home to go through the car we ran at Battleground," said Frank. "We qualified well, but we missed the redraw (failing to finish among the top-two in a heat race) and that hurt us. It was hard to pass, so if we could've started up a little bit more I think we could've finished up there higher."
Frank, who sits ninth in the WoO LMS points (104 points behind leader Josh Richards), will make his next start on the national tour in the third annual 'Illini 100' on April 9-10 at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway.
