Continuing a strong Midget season, Jerry Coons Jr. led the final 20 laps of the 25-lap “Bob Wente Classic” at the 3/8-mile Tri-City Speedway, the series’ only visit to the track after rain canceled an earlier scheduled event there.
Coons, driving the No. 10 Stealth/Sesco Mopar for longtime car owner Don Moore, passed polesitter Tim Siner on Lap 6 and was never headed in his first POWRi win of the season. Running the high groove all evening, Coons passed Siner high coming off of Turn 4.
Newly-crowned series champion Brad Loyet flipped in Turn 4 on Lap 22 while running second, and Russ Harper also flipped right behind him running third. Neither driver was seriously injured in the incident.
Trailing Coons at the checkered flag were Siner, Zach Daum, Hunter Schuerenberg and Kenny Biro. Justin Allgaier, who frequents the ARCA ReMax Series and competed Friday at Talladega Superspeedway, finished sixth. The race was filled throughout with passing and most of the field ran the track’s top side.
Heat winners were Loyet, Schuerenberg, Coons, Donnie Lehmann and Joey Montgomery.
