crate motor in the street stocks?

Rite now Jason and rusty wished there was a aftermarket distributor rule lol!

Lots of good discussion on this topic. Im sure Kevin is taking this all in and will keep an open mind about it. Its an awesome class...and some of the best side by side racing goes on in this class. Every week in and out the top 10 can win a race. You cant say that alot of times in any other class and not knocking the other classes either. Just seems these guys are so close on car stats that it is a close class. Personally......the crate motor in my opinion will not put out the same horses as a good 355 on a 2 bbl rochester. Thats the key......the carb rule and its a good one. Now im wondering if UMP is doing this nationwide as well. I havent seen anything as of yet but im sure its in the works as well. The 602 needs springs changed after 8 or so races which adds to the cost of running it on a weekly program. A 355 with typical gm heads can be run all year untouched. Ive said this before....JR Motorspsports builds a darn good reasonable street stock motor and its cheap! 3299 and shipping is free sometimes! I know 3 people who have bought these for their street cars and these things are great. Cheaper than the crate.....about what you would spend building a good street stock motor and will last for years as long as you put a 6500 chip on it.

Back in late 80's early 90's we did just that michael "was back in claimer days" built a 355 with some non typical 461 heads around 1500.00 in cost back then and double the cost now days...cough cough we had the rochester rule and we changed it over to holley jets, others ran junkyard 350, built 383,377 and 406's and we handed there arse's to them......from the back row at that and the kicker was we never turned that motor more then 5500 rpm.So it can be done

IMO the crate would be faster than most ss engines..but with the good carb it gets a little pricey..def not a "cheap alternative" and may raise the overall price to be reasonably competetive. jmo

Oh i agree Tim. In 86 we blew our motor we spent 3000 on and we thought it was the best piece ever made. It only made it through the hotlaps. Went home and got a call from an ole friend. He gave us a 350 complete motor out of a school bus. It had 250000 miles on it. We didnt touch it. Put our cam in it and went racing. Ran it all year and she never even puffed smoke. Ran with all the high dollar motors that were running out there and we had fun. Sometimes people can make due with less. Good post

true story,,back in the late 70s i had a 68 camaro on a 57 frame,,i ran it at tcs on the half mile as a late model,or mabey it was a limited late model,,i needed a motor for it so i went to the insurance pool in bridgton and bought a wrecked 67 chevy wagon for $52 bux, pulled the motor, stuck a z28 cam in it and that was it,,,this is when curtus blackwell had a chrysler kit car, bert cheatham had a bope late model, blackwell wrecked his car in the heat,,i borrowed a set of vey low profile dirt sliks off pop grey and away we went,,still got a picture of me(in my bib overall racing suit)in victory lane,,will post it on here some time....the motor in old yaller was used, got a grand in it,,pulled the 1 car to two top 5s at different tracks and a top 10 nationally,,,ya,she was a smokin a bit,,old enough to smoke...point is,i would be done if a crate motor was required,,let them run but leave us low bux guys alone,,this is lenny garson and i approve this posting

you guys talkin 4 and 5 grand 4 a ss motor. thats should b in the whole car. i know mod drivers who barely got 5 grand in a motor. and yes they run up front. this class is 4 beginners! 355cui rule 2brl

Bahahahahaha that's some funny **** !!!!

Would be neat to see them let Buick/ Olds/ pontiacs run in this class again like the old days.Heck, even let v 6's run like Bc. Would be neat to see alot diff engine brands.. Would be alot more tech though, so will probally never happen.lol.

Brian and Terry got more money in that motor the 4 or 5 grand... But will say they save a lot of money cause they got some good help building em!!! My uncle drove for Terry for years and won race after race and championships... Terry knows how to get things don't with little money Jmo

i hear u my point i guess is the ss motor should b mostly stock parts. 2 to 2500 for a ss motor would b ideal.

True but the problem is that there is literally no teching on the ss class. They just dont make em like ol Carl Springer anymore..resulting in higher prices to be competetive.

They pulled the heads of top 2 or 3 at the "takin it to the streets" race and all were legal. They had their cars figured out and probably had little to do with the engine, other than being reliable.

Pulling the heads off dont show whats in the bottom end of an engine and you cannot turn the rpms that most off the tc guys turn on a stock bottom end.
