Lonnie Wheatley, PEORIA, Ariz. (May 6, 2014) – A big night of racing action is on tap as Canyon Speedway Park is set to host the Fourth Annual Mother’s Day Race for the Cure this Saturday night.

Following an open practice session on Wednesday night from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the IMCA Modifieds headline Saturday’s event atop the 1/3-mile clay oval that also includes X-Modifieds, Pure Stocks, Renegades, Dwarf Cars and Lady Stocks.

Ricky Thornton, Jr., the current IMCA Modified points leader at CSP, will try to defend his Mother’s Day Race for the Cure title after topping last year’s event that attracted more than 120 total competitors. Mark Stewart and Tony Belcher, Jr., are other past winners of the IMCA Modified Portion of the Mother’s Day Race for the Cure event.

Thornton, Jr., has been on a hot streak in IMCA Modified action at CSP by topping four of six Winter Challenge events and then taking Copper on Dirt and Spring Speed Event wins.

Thornton, Jr., holds a 7-point edge over George Fronsman in the title chase with Cody Center and Ryan Roath third and fourth, respectively. Steve Stultz and Clifton Maggard are tied for fifth just ahead of Jason Noll, who topped the Winter Challenge opener in January.

While Ty Weidner, Matt Martinez and Joe Vlasity have posted Pure Stock wins since the points chase fired off in March, it’s Chris McCurdy, Jr., holding a 9-point edge over Vlasity in the title chase with Michael Wrightsman one more point back in third. Ty Warner, Martinez and Justin Bishop are tied another two points back.

David Harrington is out to the early Renegades points lead ahead of Tate Allen and Joe Peterson with his April 26 win while Tony Martin topped the initial Dwarf Car feature of the season on that same night.

It marks the first CSP outing of the season for both the X-Mods and Lady Stocks.
