I was there that day. We were sitting in the grandstands and absolutely sure Dan had actually flipped outside the track. Winner Stan Fox was also in an equally horrific crash at Indy three years later.
I was there that day also. A couple weeks after that race, I was driving by the fairgrounds & noticed the chain link fence outside the track was kind of bent up in that area by the tunnel. My guess is the car rode on it for a bit before coming back down on the track. I thought for sure he was dead. There was an article in Open Wheel (I think) a few years later that was about that wreck.
Another driver (Mark Gehrke I think) had some broken bones & went to the hospital after that one also.
