Daniel Becomes 11th Different Late Model Feature Winner in '05 at Bluegrass

Bardstown, KY-August 6- Defending Late Model track champion Joey Daniel of Liberty, KY became the 11th different Late Model feature winner on Saturday night at Bluegrass Speedway. Brian McCubbins of Bardstown, KY scored the $300 to win Street Stock special main event. Josh Lucas of Bardstown, KY picked up the Modified feature checkered flag and Danny Blackwell of Taylorsville, KY won yet another Sportsman feature event.

The start of the Late Model feature would be voided as Michael Wooldridge and T.J. Wooldridge would spin their entries in turn two on the initial start. The second attempted start would also be a no-go as Billy Dever, Dan Hoard, and T.J. Wooldridge would spin in turn four. The third try would be the charm as Joey Daniel would jump to the race lead, with Jason Keltner, Tim Prince, Billy Dever, and Lee Devasier in pursuit. Lap 3 would see Dever and Devasier begin a side-by-side battle for fourth that would see the duo make contact on the backchute on lap 5, with Devasier contacting the outside guardrail and rolling to a stop in turn three. Both drivers would have damaged race cars and be unable to continue. Back under green, Daniel would again pull away as Keltner, Prince, and Jeff Watson would dance three-wide for the runner-up slot on lap 6. Keltner would hold on to second, while Watson would clear Prince for third one circuit later. Watson would pull up on Keltner's backbumper on lap 9 and the pair of second-generation drivers would begin what would be the battle that would steal the show so to speak as they raced door to door for the next six laps until the caution flag waved on lap 15 for Joe Godsey who rolled to a stop on the frontchute. Daniel would continue to hold the point on the restart, with Watson again pressuring Keltner for second. Watson would finally nab the second spot on lap 16 exiting turn two. As Daniel continued to roll right along in the lead, the battle for fourth would pick up as Hoard would pressure Prince beginning on lap 20 and would finally grab the position on lap 22. The checkered flag fell three rounds later and Daniel would visit victory lane for the first time this season in the Louis and Phyllis Brady owned Anthony's Auto Sales, Newton's Country Cooking, Sam's Restaurant, S and T Market, Hometown Auto Parts, Gregory Graphics, Higdon's Food Town sponsored #77 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, AMS Race Engines powered entry. Watson would come home second, with Keltner finishing third in only his third ever start in a Late Model. Hoard and Prince would round out the top five. Completing the top ten were Scotty Earl, Michael Wooldridge, Jeff Napper, Jerry Rutherford, and Mike Hawley. Earl would be the SpeeDecals Vinyl Graphics fast qualifier among 22 entries, while Keltner won the dash. Heat wins were taken by Watson and Devasier.

Brian McCubbins made a mid-race of Lee Gray and then held off a hard charging Bill Wallace to pick up the $300 to win Street Stock main event and his second win of the 2005 season. McCubbins drives the Advanced Production Systems, Painter Sign, Let's Roll Trucking, Big O Tires, McHenry Trucking, Consolidated Electrical Distributing, McCubbins Welding, Glassworks #74 entry. Wallace would go second, with Gray third. Willie Edelen and Daroyl Samples completed the top five. The remainder of the top ten would be Garnett Eldridge, Avral Thompson, Buzz Green, Michael Cranmer, and Troy Moore. Cranmer would set fast time among 25 entries, while Gray won the dash. Heat wins went to Casey Bryan and Shane Litton.

Josh Lucas won his second straight Modified feature event and his fourth overall on the season at Bluegrass Speedway after leading flag to flag in the 20 lap feature event in the Gerald, Rita, and Jenna Lucas owned Lucas Oil Products, The Car Pool, Family Chiropractic, Riggs Electric, On-Time Courier, Betty Seng Insurance, K and N Engineering, Quick Fuel Concepts #78 Lightning Chassis, Dale Meers Race Engines mount. Rick Gumm would take runner-up honors, with Mike Fields, Dion Benningfield, and Freddy Garmon completing the top five. Rounding out the top ten were J.D. Roberts, Joe Gray, 22nd starting Jason Wheatley, 15th starting Earl Plessinger, and 17th starting Robbie Bennett. Twenty-five Modified entries saw heat wins scored by Garmon, Benningfield, and Lucas.

Danny Blackwell would pick up his seventh Sportsman feature win leading all the way in the caution free 15 lap main event for this division in the Sherry Blackwell owned Noel's Auto Sales, Lotsa Cars and Trucks, D and D Towing, Powerhouse Race Cars #B1 unit. Pat Hagan would score second place honors, with Bobby Lawson, Jimmy Bryan, and Sam Huffer rounding out the top five. Lady driver Lois Campbell would snag a season best sixth place finish, while Tim Donohoo, Jenna Chesser, Mike Bailey, and Timmy Glazer completed the top ten. Fifteen entries saw heat race checkered flags fall to Blackwell and Glazer.
