Once again the track preparation crew came through for west-central Missouri racing fans by having the track ready to go for another high-flying night at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway. Co-promoter Mike Pierce made the call at 1PM to go on with the show despite heavy rains on Saturday morning and the ominous looking early afternoon clouds still lingering. In the end, it was definitely the right decision as 118 cars checked in from all over the area as clear skies prevailed. CMS has always been known for its “if there’s a way to run we will” motto and the fans came out in droves to witness an exciting night of racing. We were honored to have many active duty and retired military members in attendance from all branches of service for Armed Forces Appreciation Night. Concordia’s “Movin’ Dave Meyer” was selected to carry the American Flag around the track during the National Anthem to start off a great night of racing in honor of all our military personnel in attendance. Colonel Connie Davis, Commander of the 509th Mission Support Group at nearby Whiteman Air Force Base was the official trophy presenter for the evening’s main event winners.

The night got underway a bit different than normal as the street stocks resumed their previous week’s rained out feature where they left at on lap 6. It didn’t take long for Warrensburg native Wayne Harper to take his number 28 ride to the front as he took the lead not long after the green flag flew. The 15-lap event went caution free to the end. At the finish it was Harper, followed by Troy Turley of Knob Noster, Tammy Korff of Fulton, Jay Lyle of Warrensburg, Herb Dannar of Holden and Darren Shore of Warrensburg. It was Wayne Harper’s second main event win of the year.

With so many cars on hand it took 16 total heat races and 3 B-mains to sort out the starting fields for the 5 classes on hand to run their main events. All together there were a total of 25 races during the evening. In the Mighty Modified division heat races went to Curt Rackers of Holts Summit, Bob Test of Jefferson City, Jimmy Dowell of Marshall, Terry Schultz of Sedalia, Charlie Ebert of Oak Grove and Joe Bradshaw of Sedalia. Limited Late Model heats were won by Virgil Jeffery of Ashland, Jimmy Morris of Blue Springs and Shad Badder of Oak Grove. Street Stock heat race winners were Thomas Roberts of Kidder, Bryant Moyer of Lone Jack, Jay Lyle of Warrensburg and Wayne Harper also of Warrensburg, with his second win of the night. Heat race winners for the 305 Sprint class were Randy Roberts of Mora and Terry Moore of Grain Valley. The MSCS Sprint heat saw Chris Parkinson fly the checkers. B-main events in the modified division were nail biters for several of the CMS Mighty Modified top contingent as many of them had to try to transfer out of the B-mains to make the main event lineup. The first B-main was won by Concordia’s Movin’ Dave Meyer over birthday boy Aaron Marrant of Richmond and Tyler Hibner of Chillicothe. The second B-main went to Dennis Walrath of Clinton over Gary Blackburn, Jr., of Fulton and Lee Hibner of Chillicothe. The Street Stock B-main event was won by Chad Eickleberry of Warrensburg over Troy Turley of Knob Noster and Tim Cressley of Tipton.

The Street Stocks kicked off their main event with first time CMS driver Thomas Roberts of Kidder sitting on the pole with Bryant Moyer right beside him on the front row. Just two laps into the event the caution flew for the number 8 ride of Josh Helms’ flat tire. Once the field went back to green Roberts continued to lead but it didn’t take long for Nathan Himes of Clinton to start putting pressure on the leader with Moyer still in the hunt as well. On lap five Wayne Harper’s two-win night came to an end when he received contact from another driver and was forced out with a left front flat tire and other damage. Just a lap later Darren Shore and Derek Rumble got together in turn one and the caution flew again. On lap nine the battle was being hotly contested for the second, third and fourth positions by Moyer, Jay Lyle and Travis Tenpenny. Roberts stretched out his lead after lap 9 and took the field to the checkers over Moyer, Tenpenny Lyle, Tammy Korff and Chad Eickleberry.

The 305 Sprints were up next for their main event and with the top 4 finishers getting the option to tag on to the tail end of the MSCS Sprint main event all the drivers were hammering the throttle to make it to the front. The hottest 305 driver at CMS has been the 98 machine of Gabe Maycock who had yet to not win a main event. On this night it was not to be as Maycock hooked a rough spot on the track and bounced on his nose a few times in turns 3 and 4. Maycock kept it on all four and was okay after the incident but unfortunately his win streak came to an end. Will Pierce’s woes continued as he exited with engine troubles on lap 4 in his number 97 machine. Once the track was cleared it was young Jonathan Cornell of Sedalia taking the win. The 17-yearold Cornell won over Mora’s Randy Roberts, Belton’s Joe Chevalier, Kingsville’s Michael Brown, Ionia’s Doug Rose and Grain Valley’s Terry Moore. The top 4 of Cornell, Roberts, Chevalier and Brown all had the option to tag on to the back of the MSCS main event. In the MSCS Sprint feature event it was Gladstone’s Chris Parkinson easily flying the checkers. Parkinson distanced himself from the rest of the field with Harry Myers of Topeka, KS, making his towing travels pay off in second. Joe Chevalier put on the show of the night in the sprint division with his 305 sprint showing the 360 MSCS cars that sometimes it’s the driver and racing line that makes the difference. Joe finished in third ahead of Alan Billings of Topeka, KS in fourth, Tim Koch of Sweet Springs was 5th followed by another 305, Michael Brown of Kingsville in sixth.

A nice field of Limited Late Models was on hand for a little chassis dancing, left front wheel-lifting action. Although the big “Dream” show was going on at Eldora, the CMS Limited Late Model drivers were having their own hard-fought battles and putting on a show of their own for the packed grandstands. It was Ashland’s Virgil Jeffery and Jimmy Morris of Blue Springs leading the 21-car field to Hershel Thompson’s green flag. From the get go you could see this was going to be a good show as the top 5 battled high and low and side by side lap after lap to decide the winner. Caution flew on lap four for a spinning Jeremy Johnson of Grain Valley as Virgil Jeffery and Jimmy Morris were waging a classic battle for the lead. After another quick caution on lap 5, a slow restart by the leaders forced a jam up on the backstretch with Allen Perryman of Belton having nowhere to go and nearly hitting backstretch official Troy Walls. Luckily Troy’s athletic prowess is still with him and he was able to run for cover out of the spinning Perryman’s way. Jeffrey continued battling with Morris as Shad Badder, Kevin the Kid Coyne and Jeff Schlup of California began to show some muscle in the top five. Badder’s night came to an end early on in the event as he exited the track after a great run with the front of the pack. On lap 8 Owen Evinger looped his number 18 ride but the real shocker was the number 4 of Jeffery pulling off the track with mechanical woes while battling for the lead with Morris. Another caution flew on lap 10 as Morris was beginning to feel pressure from Schlup and Coyne. In the end it was the 9m of Jimmy Morris taking and exciting victory over Schlup, Coyne turned his year around and came home with a strong showing in third, Mark Evinger of Oak Grove was fourth, Jason Estes of Winston fifth and Jim Wilson of Knob Noster in sixth.

The Mighty Modified main event field was a strong one in deed and the big show was no disappointment as fans were on their feet cheering for their favorite drivers from start to finish. It was Curt Rackers of Holts Summit and Bob Test of Jeff City on the front row as the 25-car starting field took the green flag. Rackers and Test waged a heated battle for the lead early on and by lap 3 Terry the “Terminator” Schultz from Sedalia was in familiar territory on the high side in third position. A lap five caution flew for the spinning Ryan Lovercamp of Concordia as Rackers now was leading over Schultz in second and Test third. For the next few laps it was Rackers and Schultz battling it out with Sedalia’s Joe Bradshaw bringing his number 8 ride into third. Schultz took the high side around Rackers and by lap 10 had the lead. While all the battling was going on up front 20th starting Dennis Walrath of Clinton and Fulton’s Gary Blackburn, Jr., who started 22nd were both making their way to the front. John the “Boomer” Brooks made a big run up to tenth on his return to the speedway driving Dean Wille’s backup number 6x machine but his night came to an end on lap 11 with a left front flat. At the same time during the caution Jimmy Dowell took his 48 ride to the hot pit as he misread the mechanical flag for Brooks. The officials sent Dowell back out and he was allowed to resume his spot prior to the yellow. On the restart Schultz was leading a now second-place running Dean Wille with Bradshaw, Rackers, Test and now Dennis Walrath in sixth. On lap twelve Wille took the lead over Schultz on the low side with Walrath now charging up into third. From laps 13 to 16 it was a heated battle all over the track for every position. Wille continued to lead with Walrath in tow, Schultz maintained third and Rackers fourth. On lap 18 “Smokin” Joe Walker brought out the red flag when he got upside down in the hot pit area, thankfully Joe was okay but unfortunately the clock was winding down on the feature event as the call was made to go green, white, checkers for the finish. The final two-lap shootout came down to high side, middle-of-the-track driving Wille and the down-on-the-low side driving Walrath. Wille held on for the win over the 20th starting Walrath in second. Curt Rackers came home third by getting around Terry Schultz of Sedalia late in the race; Schultz held on for fourth over Joe Bradshaw in fifth, 22nd place starter and points leader Blackburn was sixth followed by Warrensburg’s David Farrow in seventh and Bob Test in eighth.

Next week, Saturday June the 18th the MSCS Sprints will be back on hand as Miller Beer will serve as the race-night sponsor. Don’t miss all the exciting CMS action with the regular classes of Mighty Modifieds, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks and 305 Sprints. Gates open at 5pm with hot laps at 7 and racing getting underway at 7:30 sharp. Thank you for choosing CMS as your dirt of choice for Saturday nights in Central Missouri. We look forward to seeing all you fans right back at CMS every Saturday night, same time, same place, new race!
