CONCORD, NC – June 11, 2010 – Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich. (Late Models) and Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind. (UMP Modifieds) remained in command of the DIRTcar Racing national points standings after 10 weeks of weekly competition.
Schlenk, 23, saw his DIRTcar Late Model national points lead over Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., shrink by 96 points following last weekend’s action, but he still holds a healthy 470-point edge (1,735-1,263). The young Michigander did, of course, only enter one sanctioned event during the first week of June – a weekly show on June 4 at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park that he won, giving him nine wins in 24 starts this season.
Unzicker, meanwhile, made three starts last weekend, with a top finish of second on June 6 at Kankakee (Ill.) County Speedway. He also registered finishes of eighth on June 4 at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway and 10th on June 5 at I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo., leaving him with 20 races under his belt this season.
Veteran Mike Hammerle of St. Charles, Mo., sits third in the national standings, 507 points behind Schlenk. He leads all DIRTcar Late Model drivers with 25 starts to his credit in 2010.
The DIRTcar Late Model national points standings are determined this year using drivers’ best 35 finishes/points nights.
Gilpin, meanwhile, lost a handful of points from his advantage in the UMP Modified national standings, ending the weekend with a precarious 16-point lead (1,692-1,676) over Rusty Griffaw of Festus, Mo. Both drivers have now made 25 starts this season, reaching the threshold at which UMP Modified competitors begin replacing their worst finishes/points nights.
The 19-year-old Gilpin had a busy weekend, racing at three different tracks in successive nights. He was victorious in a feature run on June 4 at Moler Raceway Park in Williamsburg, Ohio, before finishing second on June 5 at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway and fifth on June 6 at Vermilion County Speedway in Danville, Ill.
Griffaw came close to a perfect weekend, winning on June 4 at Fredericktown (Mo.) Speedway and scoring runner-up finishes on June 5 at I-55 Raceway and June 6 at Shepp’s Speedway in Alexander, Ill.
There was a change at the top in two of DIRTcar Racing’s six other national points races as Scotty Oliver of Owensboro, Ky., took over the Limited Modified points lead and Larry Russell Jr. of Harristown, Ill., grabbed control of the Stock Car points battle. Maintaining their national points leads were Tait Davenport of West Paducah, Ky. (Pro Late Models), Jimmy Cummins of Waterloo, Ill. (Sportsman), Scott Mooers of Osteen, Fla. (Factory Stocks) and Michael Rittenberry of Clarksville, Tenn. (Sport Compacts).
