Portsmouth, OH (September 1, 2007) It’s been a long time coming for Wooster, Ohio’s Doug Drown but the 25 year old finally picked up his first career MACS A-Main event in the ‘River Days Rumble 50’ at the Coleman Family’s Portsmouth Raceway Park, Portsmouth, OH.

Local hero, Kenny Christy sat on the outside of pole-sitter Drown as they brought the stacked 24-car field to green. Drown quickly shot into the lead while Ryan Markham fiercely battled with Christy for second. Markham was riding the high side around the super fast 3/8 mile oval but lost the handle in the middle of turns three and four to bring out the first caution.

The ‘Delaware’ style restart saw Doug continue to lead followed by an intense battle for second between Christy, Barry Bragdon, and five time PRP feature winner Audie Swartz. Kenny was able to hold off the third and fourth place cars as Rod Conley cracked the top five from his tenth place start. R.J. Conley had scrapped his way up to third until his left front spindle broke sending him pit-side during the lap 13 caution for Bragdon.

After two quick cautions for Chris Wilson on lap 15, and Jason Montgomery, whose mount came up lame on lap 18, Drown was able to regain his tempo as he resumed his pursuit of victory. Rod, also looking for his first MACS win, had finessed his way under Christy for second and set his sights on Drown. On lap 21 the final caution flew for Wilson who had spun. This turn of events closed the ranks with Drown tenaciously holding on to the point over the equally eager Rod. Drown again fired the field with 2002 MACS champion Jack Pencil making a daring move on the outside of turn two to catapult from seventh to fifth after starting fifteenth. While that action was occurring defending MACS champion, Jason Covert blasted into the top ten from his 21st place start.

Drown, who had masterfully led every lap to this point, caught lapped traffic on lap 32 as Conley inched his way closer to the leader. Conley matched every move Drown made as the laps rapidly wound down. With just five laps remaining Conley made a thrilling kamikaze move to the outside of Drown going into turn three. Unfortunately for Conley he could not get his Rocket Chassis to stick and lost about five car lengths to the leader. Undaunted by Conley, Drown held his line and blistered the final four laps to take his largest monetary victory of his career. Conley convincingly held on to second keeping Christy, Swartz, and Pencil all at bay. Tim Hitt led the next tier of five finishers knocking down sixth over Covert, MACS ROY contender Matt Lux, ‘05 MACS Champion Mike Balzano and Ben Adkins, from his 17th start, rounded out the top ten.
