Driver Safety?

ALCOHOL

#1 Rule Bender
I was at a track this past Sunday night and seen a crate late model driver drive to the infield, get out of his car with a sweatshirt and shorts on! I guess he would be at fault if anything would of happened,,stupid,,,,Yes!

i guess the obvious question to ask was he packing the track, real slow, or hot lapping, or actually racing? i have seen drivers pack the track w/o a helmet, so although a gray area, reasonable. if he was at any kind of speed, not only is he an idiot, but track personnel is equally an idiot(s)...

Wow, guess he doesnt value his life very much! I have always wondered what goes through the mind of drivers who wear jeans, motorcycle helmets, nothing fireproof, old belts, no gloves, and the list goes on and on. We see it way to often.

That driver needs to visit a burn unit at a hospital. Was more worry-some is he would go on and hurt himself, then turnaround and sue the track for not protecting himself from himself. There should be someone at pit gate always looking for full safety gear; belts, helmet, suit, gloves, etc.

gotta agree, cobin. guys like this just dont care about themselves, they dont care about anybody else, either. drivers that sacrifice safety for various reasons(usually cost, because good quality safety equip. is costly)scare me. i understand that everybody out there is on a budget, but how much does a even a short stay in the hospital cost(including lost work, etc) versus the cost of a good snell helmet (not dot or "M" rating, either) and a t least a double layer nomex suit, socks, shoes and gloves cost?

My fire in 1978 Bradford England, I was the only one racing with a fire suit and gloves. Got out with only minor burns. As a car spun in front of me, I turned into the infield, only to hit a massive wood beam, which broke a fuel line... 1st pic, the moment the fire started, I'm in the car. 2nd fire gets worse, Im getting out. 3rd pic fire crew had a difficult time getting fire out, I'm in the white drivers suit. 4th pic, the aftermath. I went back with owner and crew to his shop and we worked all night for a race the next day. But the car had issues and I use another car.

Not having been there, i have no clue.... BUT, is there a chance that the driver slipped out of his suit before exiting the car? I just can't imagine someone being THAT reckless!?!?

yeah, i saw that same thing. i thought it was a little comical, but it really isnt. the bad thing is i think he got out of the car because he had a small fire under the hood. i have done some dumb things but that is pretty of irresponsible.

Sliped out of his suit? Seriously? Ok Midget racer or anyone, help me out on this for me because I don't know the stock car rules, isnt there a date on the helment for the snell rating? (spelling?) We can't use anything older than 2005 if I'm right and that only make it legal untill 2012, and being stock cars at any level it's not required to wear all fire proof gear? I know the Power I Series walks to every car before they start to shake the car and make shure the brakes work how hard is it for the flag man to walk down the grid as there being lined up and just peak into the cars to asure there belts and suit and helment are on? I know Pevely dose it most of the time if not all the time.

The cost of good safety equipment is very costly but at what cost is your own life worth?? I wear all simpson safety products, full containment seat and a HANS device. I even wear fireproof headsock, im to young and dont want to go through life with a burned up face or worse. You know what your getting into when you decide to go racing and if you cant afford to buy the proper safety equipment then you shouldnt be racing. The tracks have a lot to do with the lack of safety the drivers have, as long as they can get away with not having the proper stuff then the drivers will. Safety tech should be at the top of the priority list for the track owners.

I have to agree with all of you,he's my son and shocked to see him get out of the car with shorts on.He has all of the good right safety equipment, helmet, gloves, firesuit $700, shoes. I was so shocked i thought it was pretty stupid of him not to have them on,not for his defense, but he left them in the driveway at the shop when he left, but he still did not have enough brains not to get in the car without them.It won't happen again with my car. Dad

There was a guy at bellevilles playday that was driving a hornet with no seatbelts. crazy stuff!!!

even in the hornets. **** happens. I broke a lower control arm on my hornet and stopped in turn 3 at highland speedway and a rookie never seen the caution light, and t-boned me between the driver side door and front tire. my car burnt to the ground everything from the raditor to the seat, before the fire was put out. I thank god for good safety equipment. it was a few yrs back.

Yes, seriously. My fat butt wouldn't be able to get out of my suit while inside the car, but some of these guys probably can. I was trying to give the benefit of the doubt. Obviously, after his dad's statement , we now know he actually is a bonehead...and should have been reprimanded for the stunt.

I totally agree that there are ALOT of hornets at fayette county speedway that have no business being on the track due to safety concerns.....they definately should look into this class not only for the safety of those drivers but to cover the tracks tail as well! JMO
