dumping ATF on your headers??

I just read about this in the newest Dirt Late Model. Has anyone ever heard of coating their headers with ATF? I thought I should ask about it before I do it and have my mom yelling at me for stinking up the house.
 
ive dropped some on hot exhaust before and it caught on fire.are you trying to make a fire????if so then i guess its a good idea!lol
 
I've done this on all my headers,soak a rag with atf and wipe them down
when they are hot,seems to make them last a lot longer.
 
interesting........i am just may have to try that. Does it continue to stink or just right after it is done? Do you do it so often or just once? Just curious.

I spray the headers every week with a product similar to wd-40.Keeps headers from rusting and looking nice.
 
yes i have done this as well ,keeps the rust off,and will protect the paint, if the correct paint is used,unlike the factory paint that burns off!!!
 
You dang young uns:) ..... Thats an old old trick,best done on new headers. pour atf inside of new headers and wipe down the outside with an atf soaked rag,install headers and light the motor "beware as it'll smoke up the neighborhood"....... The atf will bake into a dark coating that will resist rust longer than if not coated....
 
huh, I never heard that. I might have to give it a shot on my truck after I paint the headers. any suggestions on what brand (Rustoleum, etc...) to use on them.
 
we used to paint the headers with VHT high temp paint. i dunno where you get that nowadays. i guess a place like wise speed shop or something. using wd40 on the outside of a header will do 2 things; protect the paint a bit, and will make mud fall right back off. it wont stick. makes them real easy to wash off, too. i would think a product like PAM cooking spray would do about the same thing.

Shame on you! Does this mean Jimmy will do something else equally (or worse) really stinky in the garage so that I have to smell it in the kitchen? I don't think I can stand much more of this smelly stuff! I'm burning out the exhaust fan on the microwave!

This morning, Bruce brought a transmission case into the kitchen because it was too cold for it in the garage! Can you believe that? Buddy the racing dog went nuts, barking at it like it was a huge mouse in the house. I had to cover it with newspapers so he couldn't see it to keep him quiet.

This household is too much! I live with a bunch of lunatics! :eek:

Debbie, when do you find the time to make the chocolate chip cookies if he's using the table? I bought a house and learned that the people living there overhauled a motorcycle engine in the front room! By the way, you could tell it too!
