Championship Round

by Larry Olson; Mountain Home AR

WEST PLAINS MO. Eddie Martin of Stillwell, Oklahoma bested a field of 160 Modifieds en route to winning the 4th Annual Dirt Works Justin Stanfill Memorial at the West Plains Motor Speedway. Martin pocketed $8,000 for his efforts in the 50 Lap feature race that saw five different leaders in some incredibly close racing.

Gary Clark held the pole for the championship feature event with Mark Noble to his outside. The field went three wide on the start, with Jeff Taylor joining Clark and Noble in the fray. Noble edged into the lead in turn four, while Taylor and Clark continued to duel for second. Taylor moved into the second spot in turn four on the second lap with Clark, Eric Turner, and Tommy Myer falling in behind.

Myer bested Turner for the fourth spot in turn two on lap three, then drove by Clark for third in turn four on the next lap. Martin and Randy Zimmerman bypassed Clark, and dueled for the fifth spot.

Out front, Noble and Taylor had left the pack. Kelly Shyrock moved into fifth on lap eight. Taylor pulled even with Noble, taking the lead coming out of four on lap nine. Something broke in Taylor's read end gears, locking the car up spinning Taylor in turn one. That brought out the only caution of the event. Taylor's promising night ended early, with his car riding the hook back to the pits.

Noble, Myer, Martin, and Shyrock moved into a virtual original start formation as the race restarted, racing two by two in a tight four car pack. Noble, Martin, and Myer then went three wide on lap 12, then Noble and Myer went side by side, with Martin and Shryock in a dead heat right behind them again.

Tommy Myer was able to edge into the lead at the stripe on lap 14, then Shyrock made the pass on Martin for third in turn two on lap 15. Myer, Shyrock, and Noble went back to three wide racing for the lead on lap 16, with Shyrock taking his turn at the point coming out of turn four on lap 17.

Eddie Martin moved into second spot behind Shryock, with Noble and Myer dicing side by side behind him. Martin moved into side by side formation with Shyrock on lap 19, with Shyrock on the bottom and Martin racing around the top. Those two raced side by side over the next eight laps. Martin finally was able to pull ahead of Shryock for good in turn two on lap 27.

Traffic loomed for the front runners, as Martin was dealing with back markers by lap 30. Martin pulled out to a five carlength advantage over Shryock by lap 31, and had improved his margin to ten carlenghts by lap 35. The pair cleared traffic with Martin's ten carlength lead in tact by lap 40, but then Shryock made his last charge at the lead.

Kelly Shryock closed to five carlengths by lap 43, and the top pair were nose to tail by lap 47. Shryock made his best attempt to regain the lead getting his nose all the way up to Martin's door coming out of four going to the white flag. That was as close as Shryock could come however.

Eddie Martin came home with the hotly contested win, with Kelly Shryock, Mark Noble, Randy Zimmerman, and Tommy Myer making up the top five. Tony Anglin, Mark Norris, Dan Chapman, Jack Sullivan, and Gary Clark rounded out the top ten.
