Saturday nights are reserved for weekly racing in the eye of the many dirt-track enthusiasts around the US and once again the drivers and fans turned out for a great night of competition on the high banks of CMS last night. A total of 77 cars in the four racing divisions made their way to the track competing in side-by-side action in 15 different races during the night. There were 22 B-modifieds, 14 Street Stocks, 20 ULMA Late Models and 21 ‘Mighty’ Modifieds on hand for Veterans Appreciation and KDKD, FM 95.3 Radio Race Night. Prior to the races getting underway, Johnny Crawford, winner of the KDKD Colgate Country Showdown, treated everyone to a fantastic rendition of the National Anthem as U.S. Air Force serviceman and driver of the #03b B-modified, Chris Brockway, carried “Old Glory” around the track in honor of the Vets in attendance.

The B-modified drivers kicked off the night in fine fashion with three heat races as drivers continued their quest to try and figure out a way to stop the Scotty Martin freight train from rolling through the ‘Burg yet another time. C.J. Lyle was the first driver of the night to find victory lane by racing his way to the front of B-mod heat number one over Cliff Owings and Jeremy Lyle. Martin didn’t take long to show that he was once again a force to be reckoned with as he picked up the win in heat two over Brockway and Michael Mullins. Bobby Raybourn ran a great race in heat three to out duel Brian Ziegler and Lucas Isaacs to the line. Lyle and Martin brought the field to the line for the 15-lap feature event and from the get go Martin used his outside front row starting spot to pace the field with Lyle just behind. The first caution fell on lap two for debris as Martin once again paced the field upon the restart leading into a quickly ran eight laps of green-flag racing. Another caution on lap 10 regrouped the field one more time as Lyle did all he could to challenge Martin, he got close several times but could not find the right line to make the pass on the fast and tacky track. A lap 13 melee down the front stretch involving both lapped cars and lead-lap cars brought out the red flag. Bobby Raybourn, who had been running third and Brian Ziegler who was fourth, both suffered extensive damage from the grinding crash and were unable to continue; however, both drivers were okay after the scary looking incident. With just a few laps remaining, Martin again felt pressure from Lyle for the lead on the restart but like he’s done so many times before Martin sailed on to his 12th feature race victory of the year ahead of Lyle in second. Michael Mullins made a last-lap pass on Jeremy Lile for the third position with Lile and Cliff Owings just behind in fourth and fifth. Ethan Isaacs moved from his 11th starting spot to bring home a top six finish ahead of Phillip Wright, John Kuecker, Brockway and Roger Stone rounding out the top ten.

Up next were the Street Stocks for their 15-lap feature event. Earlier in the evening Jeff Lazenby raced his way to victory in the first qualifying heat race ahead of Marc Carter and Brett Nail with points leader Brian Johnson besting the field in heat two over Nick Bennett and Chad Eickleberry. The two heat race winners, Lazenby and Johnson, brought the field to the green flag for the feature event with Carter and Bennett close behind. A tough night of racing sidelined Tammy Korff as mechanical problems prevented the second-in-points competitor from completing any laps in the feature event. On lap three a quick caution for debris was thrown as Johnson resumed the lead ahead of a great battle for the second spot between Lazenby and Carter upon the restart. Herb Dannar, who entered the night in third place in the standings also had trouble during the race as a flat tire ended his hopes of gaining ground on Korff in the standings. The furious pace by the drivers at the front of the pack had the fans cheering for their favorites from the stands as Johnson narrowly hung on to his lead ahead of the fast-paced field. After a race-long battle for the second spot Carter was finally able to get around Lazenby late in the race with Eickleberry and Nail lurking close behind. At the checkers Johnson once again proved to be the man to beat as he raced his way to his ninth win of the year. Last week’s winner, Carter, finished in second with Lazenby, Eickleberry, Nail and Bennett rounding out the top six. Stephen Barber, Chris Culbertson, John Miller and Adam Bush crossed the line 6th thru 10th respectively.

For the second week in a row the car count for the late models was strong as 20 drivers competed in three heat races to complete the starting lineup for the 15-lap feature event. Fred King grabbed heat race one ahead of Mark Evinger, who was making a return visit substitute driving for his son Owen in the #18 late model in second, with Jason Estes in third. Bob King, brother of Fred, bested Chad Clark and Kevin Coyne in heat race number two with Jamie Wineland driving a smooth race to cross the line ahead of James Rutledge and Brett Rollert in heat three for the win. Come feature time, all 20 cars made the call for the start of the race with the King Brothers starting side-by-side at the front of the field. From the get go Bob King grabbed the lead ahead of his brother as the two pulled away from the rest of the field. A blistering pace and close battles for position with great driving by all the drivers throughout the field allowed the race stay green for an extended period of racing until late in the race. While battling for the lead in lapped traffic, the Kings narrowly missed a lapped machine off of corner number four, narrowly missing each other in the process. The close call allowed then third-place running Chad Clark to close in a little on the two leaders. Behind the lead trio, Estes, Evinger, and Wineland maintained their positions as drivers tried to find the best line around the track to move forward. With so many strong cars on hand, many of which were ULMA members trying to earn late-season association points, it was a challenge for many drivers to improve upon their starting positions. Deep in the field such drivers as ULMA points leader Brett Rollert, Tommy Cordray, who was making his first appearance at CMS this year, Jon Binning, Danny Lorton and Steven Clancy did all they could to secure top-ten finishes. Allen Perryman, who was running strong, was forced off the track on lap 13 with mechanical issues as was David Angell as problems down the front stretched forced an early end to his bid for a top ten finish. Late in the race Marty Pope went over the turn three embankment on the white-flag lap, which forced a re-start of the race for a green, white, checkered flag finish. Fred King and Chad Clark tried to find a way around leader Bob King during the final two laps but were unable to challenge Bob King, who was able to take his ninth feature race victory this year over Brother Fred with Clark hanging on to third ahead of Estes in fourth. Evinger capped off a great return to the late models with a fifth-place run over Wineland, Rollert, Cordray, Binning and Lorton rounding out the top ten.

The battle for the ‘Mighty’ Modified title again highlighted the evening’s racing action as the mods capped off the night’s program. Prior to the feature event, heat races were contested as point leader Joe Walker flew the checkers ahead of Doug Walrath and James McMillin in heat race one. Second in points, Terry Schultz sailed to victory in heat two over Dean Wille and Chad Lyle with Tim Karrick besting Jason Bodenhamer and Kyle Westerhold in heat three. By virtue of their heat race victories it was the two points leaders, Walker and Schultz, who paced the field from the onset of the 20-lap race. Walker and Schultz had a great battle up front for the initial laps with Schultz on the high side and Walker down low. Karrick and Bodenhamer were not far behind the lead duo in their own head-to-head battle for the third spot. Schultz used his high-line experience to grab the point ahead of Walker until a lap seven caution regrouped the field for a single-file restart. Once the race resumed, the torrid battle for the lead began to heat up. By lap ten Karrick was able to move ahead of Walker for the runner-up position and set his sights on Schultz for the lead. Just behind the three leaders Lyle, Bodenhamer, and Wille ran strong in the fourth thru sixth positions. Lyle looked to be securely in fourth for a while but Bodenhamer was able to sneak around Lyle for that position late in the race. On lap 13 one last caution flew for two spinning cars off of the turn one area as Karrick used the low lane to find his way around a high-line driving Schultz, who had a rare bobble while leading in turn one. Once Karrick grabbed the lead there was no stopping him from racing his way to his series-leading fourth modified feature victory of the season. Schultz gained a few points on Walker by crossing the line in second with Walker in third and Bodenhamer fourth. Lyle, Wille, Doug Walrath, Westerhold, McMillin and a strong run by Chad Staus completed the top ten at the conclusion of the event.

Next week the chase for the four division titles continues in all divisions. Fans in the stands are asked to bring donations for Operation FREEDOM FUN next week as the track will be taking collections for US service members to provide to overseas children in war torn regions of the world.
