The Fastrak Champions Series was at the Waycross Motor Speedway for the first time ever this weekend and also a first for the Series on a oil based track. Most of the drivers were in shock as they entered the facility. The track really looked like asphalt. Although some had been there before, most had never seen anything quite like this. It was different, no doubt about it but now the Fastrak Series drivers have gained some valuable experience on this type of surface as well. Lets just say the hardest tire Fastrak has available to run is not hard enough for Waycross. Different indeed but all the drivers really liked it. The facility was laid out very well with everything conveniently located.
Qualifying took place as local Rhett Carter set fast time with David Browning of Jacksonville FL on the outside making up the front row.
Intermission was incredible as the Fastrak drivers made their way to the grand stands for the autograph session which was packed. It was full of fans from the time they got there. Several drivers stated they ran out of cards and had to send someone to the pits to pick up more for them. It was quite a site to see.
Carter definitely set the pace for the night only to be DQ’ed in post race tech. The race only had two cautions the entire night. Bobby Morris was moving through the field quickly as to later have problems and having to pull in with only four laps to go. A special note of interest for Justin Sims, Randall Jordan and Gary Phillips. Phillips touched the wall in the second “hot lap” session and much to his crew and help from all the other Fastrak teams he didn’t make qualifying but did get to start the feature for valuable points for the Championship chase. Randall Jordan and crew had not slept a wink all the night before the race getting their car ready as they had damaged their primary car the weekend before. Justin Sims and team make a gallant effort in getting a brand new car ready this week after having torn their car up at Wythe the weekend before.
