An incredible spring evening finally fell upon Central Missouri Speedway with dry and warmer weather for Armed Forces Appreciation and Social Networking night at the races. A full field of 102 cars filled the pits in the four competing divisions. There were 42, modifieds, 17 ULMA late models, 23 B-modifieds, and 20 street stocks checked in to compete in 20 races.
The B-Modifieds started off the evening with three qualifying heat races with passing points determining the main event lineup. Jeremy Lile of Higginsville was victorious in the first heat over Dalton Kirk and Paul West. In heat two, Jacob Ebert took the win over Brad Smith, and Ethan Isaacs. The third and final heat went to Troy Carlyle over Rusty Trimble and Lucas Isaacs. For the main event, Jeremy Lile had the pole at the start of the race with Troy Carlyle to his outside. Early on, Lile looked as though he might have the field covered but previous feature winner Brad Smith quickly entered the race to heat things up at the front of the field. On lap six, defending track champion Ethan Isaacs’ car ended up high-sided on the back straightaway berm but he was able to continue after the caution flag flew for his stalled machine. By lap nine, Carlyle grabbed the lead as the triple threat teen terrors ruled the top of the standings with Carlyle, Lile, and Kirk holding down the top three with Brad Smith giving chase. Another caution flag flew on lap ten, once again slowing the field, just after the restart; fourteen year old Dalton Kirk raced his way to the front with Carlyle, Smith and Ebert inside the top four. From here on out it was Kirk driving like a seasoned veteran who had control of the race as Lile slipped back through the field after getting too high in turn two. In the end, it was Gardner, Kansas driver Kirk who came away with his first-ever CMS victory in the b-mods. In victory lane, the young driver told the fans that his 15th birthday will be this coming Monday as the crowd gave him a big round of applause for his convincing win after starting in sixth position. Carlyle settled for second with Smith coming home in third. Jacob Ebert crossed the line in fourth, Lile fifth and Ethan Isaacs, who rebounded from tailback, took sixth.
Street Stocks were second in the lineup to compete in their heat races with Chad ‘the Bandit’ Eickleberry of Warrensburg taking the win in heat one over Michael Mullins and Brian ‘Back in Black’ Johnson. For heat two, it was another Warrensburg driver, Marc ‘the Shark’ Carter taking the victory ahead of Devin Irvin and Terry Moss. John ‘the Boomer’ Brooks made it a Warrensburg sweep of heat-race winners by driving to the win over Bryce McMillin in second and Adam Portzen third. For the 15-lap main event for the streets, Brooks started on pole with Eickleberry to his outside. The yellow flag appeared early in the race with Justin Metzner spinning on lap three as Michael Mullins also experienced problems on the track. On the restart it was Brooks, Carter, Eickleberry, and Johnson pacing the way with Terry Moss holding down fifth. On lap ten, a rare spin by Carter relegated him to the back of the field as leader Brooks continued to protect the low line around the track. On lap seven, the race was red flagged for an incident with a fan in the stands. Once the field went back to green-flag action Johnson powered his way to the front of the field as Brooks and Eickleberry continued their torrid battle for the second position on lap nine. Another caution flag flew over the race on lap twelve after Michael Mullins got sideways off of turn four, causing a chain-reaction incident as Carter, Bryce McMillin, Herb Dannar, and Scotty Dukes were all involved. Once the race resumed, it was all Johnson as he cruised to his second-consecutive feature race win to visit the Waterloo Storage Products Victory Lane. Brooks held on for second just in front of Eickleberry in third, Donnie Dannar fourth, Mullins rebounding with a strong run to fifth, and Terry Moss, making his first CMS appearance of the year in a great run to sixth.
ULMA Late Model heat races hit the track with an exciting heat race number one as Kevin ‘the Kid’ Coyne picked up the win ahead of Shawn Rayfield and Steve Clancy. Dave Meyer transitioned to the late models with ease and picked up the win in heat number two ahead of Jason Bodenhamer and Brett Wood. Bob King powered his way to the front and scored some big passing points for the win in the final late model heat over Jon Binning and Vance Wilson. King earned the pole position by virtue of his hard-earned passing points from his heat race with ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer to his outside. Meyer shot out to an early lead with King giving chase in second. The first of several caution flags flew with just one lap in the books for debris on the speedway as Meyer once again paced the field on the restart. The second yellow came quick as several cars, including Ashley Lancaster, Brian Pipes, Zach Green, and Jimmy Jobe all got together down the back stretch entering turn three. Once the race resumed, Meyer still had control of the race with King, Bodenhamer, Coyne, and Rayfield giving chase. The yellow again appeared for an incident between Rayfield and Coyne just as Bodenhamer made a pass for second position. Turn four was the sight of the next caution flag for Lane Ehlert and Danny Monroe as Meyer and Bodenhamer began to duke it out for the lead. Binning made his way into the top three near the midway point of the race with King slipping back to fourth. The yellow again came out on Lap 11, initially for Brian Pipes and also a surprising spin by Meyer near the front of the field. After the spin, Meyer unexpectedly pulled his car to the pit area and was done for the night. On lap twelve, Bodenhamer found himself in the lead with a heated battle with Binning up front. The fifth yellow flew on lap 12 when Zach Green’s car stalled on the track, the sixth caution came on lap 15 for debris in turn three. From here on out it was all the Bodee show as the Centerview driver scored a big win in the Derek Nevels-owned #88 for his first CMS victory of the year. Jon Binning methodically worked his way into second by the end of the race with King third, Wilson fourth, Wood fifth and Clancy in sixth.
Modifieds capped the heats off with Dustin Boney taking the win in heat number one ahead of Isaac Dotson, Lucas Conley, and Tyler Schmidt. ‘Smokin’ Joe Walker grabbed the win in heat two by beating Dean Wille, Jamie Ragland, and Curt Rackers to the line. Tim Karrick of Basehor, Kansas drove to a convincing win in heat number three over Rick Beebe, Doug Walrath, and Josh Bindseil. Mark ‘Fluffy’ Dotson snagged the victory in heat number four ahead of last week’s feature winner Jason Thompson in second, James McMillin third and Nick Pence fourth. The fifth and final qualifying heat race went to back-row starting Jim Moody of Odessa, MO. Luke Feeback was second at the line followed by Austin Siebert and a hard-charging Terry Schultz. With 42 modifieds on hand two b-mains were needed to complete the 24-car starting field lineup for the main event. The first b-main saw James McMillin, Nick Pence, Jake Richards, and Matt Dotson all transferring to the main event. In b-main number two, Aaron Marrant, Terry Schultz, Ed Griggs, and Bubba Harvey completed the final transfer spots. In the main event, Moody started on pole but struggled early on by getting too high off of corner number two. Dustin Boney quickly raced his way into the lead after Moody’s troubles with Rick Beebe, Jamie Ragland, and Joe Walker close behind. On lap five, the caution flew for Moody, whose troubles continued with a spin that also involved Lucas Conley and Luke Feeback. Boney continued to lead once the field got back to racing. By lap nine, Dean Wille had a strong run going near the front and moved into second, only to see his night come to an end as his car stalled on the high side in turn one. By this time, Walker had fought his way back to second position behind Boney with Beebe now third and Mark Dotson fourth. Walker later challenged Boney for the lead up front but the Deuces Wild machine of Boney was too strong on this night as the Kansas City driver cruised to the victory with a convincing win. Jason Thompson made his way from seventh-starting spot to claim the runner up spot late in the race as Walker settled for third. Beebe came away with another strong run to finish fourth; Dotson was fifth, with Ragland, Tim Karrick, and James McMillin completing the top eight.
We are just a week away from the first CMS special event of the year coming up on Memorial Day weekend, May 28 and 29. Street Stocks will headline on May 28 with a $1,500-to-win event, also on Friday night is the inaugural appearance of the Ozark Mountain Midget Series and night one “inside row” qualifying for modifieds. On Saturday, May 29, the "Mighty Modifieds' take center stage with another full program of qualifying action to set the main event “outside row” for the $3,000-to-win special event. ULMA Late Models and B-Modifieds are also part of the action on Saturday night.
