Firesuits?

Saturday night at Highland, the winner of the Crate Late Model feature got out of his car in victory lane and it didn't look like he had a firesuit on. I thought they were required for all classes. Am I wrong or was I seeing things?

No you wasn't seeing things, i've been to fayette county and seen him get out of the car with shorts, tennis shoes and a t-shirt on!

Oh, I won't happen to me... famous last words.

How can any driver get on the track without a proper fire suit? Is no one checking for safety gear (belts on, etc.) when cars are lined up for the next race? This kind of moron with no fire suit is kind of person that could cause big trouble for a race track. Lawsuits for people not taking responsibility for there own stupid actions is just the kind of thing that could shut down a track.

Next, if you have been in a fire like I have. See photo. It can happen to you. This photo was taken in 1978 in Bradford, England. I am just out of the car... with singed mustache, hair, melted shoes (not racing shoes) and a burned away face shield. I was lucky... this was back in the days of single layer shiny nomex, but I was wearing nomex underwear, and GLOVES! Burning your hands can be the end of you being able to work. Another thing, quite often you see dirty, oily fire suits, they are not as effective as a clean suit.

I will get off my podium now... thanks.

im pretty sure this was brought up last year at fayette county with the same guy racing without a firesuit and they got on here saying it was a mistake because they forgot it at home. haha, so that makes it ok, haha. so to race without it a second time is beyond STUPID!!!

Man, I hope Highland's insurance company doesn't get wind of this. If so, they won't have anyone to blame but themselves if the insurance company takes action, mistake or not. Wow!

Most of these "firesuits" aren't going to do much in the protection department anyway, not saying you shouldn't have one one though. If a firesuit made a guy faster everyone out there would have a brand new one and take good care of it, but that's not the case! Most of them have been washed so many times and improperly cared for that I bet they would only burn half as slow as gasoline.

There father should not allow this.....;(

First off, this is the first time Daniel has ever raced without a firesuit,I do not condone this, and he knows better.Second,it was not Daniel at Fayette County last year it was Charlie, I told Charlie then not to ever drive my car again without a firesuit, and I now have told Daniel the same.Aaron and I went to Kankakee, we did have all firesuits with us,we did not know Daniel was going racing, so the problem is taken care of on this end. Geez people, if you were listening to him when the announcer talked to him, he explained why he didn't have it on and he seemed embarrassed about it, considering it was the first thing he said! If a driver's suit has ever been washed in regular laundry soap, then it's no good for fire protection anyway, read the labels!

no excuse is good enough period

If it was a good suit or not doesnt matter........insurance requires tracks to put this in their rules. Imagine what their insurance rates would be if they had a t shirt and whatever policy?

This is an example of when an official should have stepped in. Sometimes you have to protect the "stupids "from themselves. I don't care if your Kenny Schrader if u don't got a suit u don't race. It don't get much more simple than that

Highland Speedway Officials were unaware that a driver was competing without a fire suit on Saturday. We found out the same time everyone else did, when he got out of the car after the race. At that time we asked him where his suit was, and he informed us it was in Kankakee with the other cars. All drivers are required to wear a fire suit at Highland Speedway. Highland Speedway and UMP Rules state the following:

3.0 Personal Safety Equipment
3.1 General
A.) Each competitor is the solely responsible of for the effectiveness and proper installation, per the manufacturer’s specifications, of personal safety equipment and determining it to be adequate for competition at every event. Each competitor is expected to investigate and educate themselves for continuing improvement regarding their own personal safety equipment.
3.3 Protective Clothing
A.) All drivers should be required to wear a fire resistant driving uniform meeting minimum of the SFI 3.2A/5 specification and display a valid SFI 3.2A/5 label.
B.) All drivers should wear fire resistant accessories including but not limited to; head sock, under garments, shoes, and socks. All drivers will be required to wear fire resistant gloves. Shoes and gloves will be required to meet minimum of the SFI 3.3 specifications and display a valid SFI 3.3 label.

We at Highland Speedway find this behavior unacceptable and notified UMP Sunday morning of Saturday nights’ events and what happened regarding the fire suit situation.
Highland Speedway has fire suits in various sizes available to borrow if anyone forgets to bring along a suit or has a suit but is unable to locate it. We have sizes all the way up to 5XL available. If the situation ever occurs where a driver does not have a fire suit all they have to do is ask and we would be happy to allow them to borrow one.

Effective September 27, 2012 the Highland Speedway has added the following to our rules:
C.) Any drivers failure to wear a fire resistant uniform and accessories will be disqualified immediately, even if the race is already completed. Disqualification includes losing all points and purse awarded for the race and/or completed race. Any drivers that have a second offense will be banned from the Highland Speedway for one full year from the date of the second occurrence.

He should have been disqualified that night with no questions asked. It was already a rule that a fire suit is required so why let someone get by without wearing one? The driver should have been stripped of all points and money for that night right then and there.
