Mother Nature finally gave way and Central Missouri Speedway was able to kick off the 2004 racing season in style as 109 cars filled the pits for Comfort Inn Race Night.

Sixty-five modifieds signed in looking to take home the winner’s share of the highest paying modified purse in the country and when it was all over Fulton, MO’s Gary Blackburn, Jr. found himself in victory lane. "We just tried to run where it was the smoothest and miss some of the holes because I knew survival would be the key. With all this rain, I can't believe we got to run tonight, but I'm glad we did," Blackburn commented in Victory Lane.

The A Feature got off to a scary start as Rick Kimberling of Slater got into the wall on the backstretch causing his car to become airborne. Kimberling’s car struck the outside retaining fence and came to a rest upside down. When track officials reached his mount he was able to crawl from the wreckage and walk away on his own power.

Once the race resumed Blackburn continued his way to the front after starting the race from the outside of row two and worked his way into second following Mark Dotson who made the trip down from Cameron, MO. Attrition became a factor as several drivers pulled their rides into the pits with varying mechanical failures including perennial front-runners Richard Layne, Tom Charles, and Alan Deatherage. As the race wore on it looked as though Dotson was going to be the class of the field until a failed front suspension saw him head to the pits handing the lead over to Blackburn which he never would relinquish. Following across the line were Howard Hall, Joe Walker, Jim Morris, and Chad Staus.

With sixty-five cars in attendance the field was whittled down through eight heat races and four B-mains to set the starting grid. Richard Layne, Mark Dotson, Kyle Westerhold, Gary Blackburn Jr., Joe Walker, Rick Kimberling, Alan Deatherage, and Chad Lyle were victorious in their heats. Jim Morris, Jim Moody, Dennis Bunger, and Dean Wille made their way to the feature by winning the B-mains.

The Limited Late Model division saw an exciting finish to what was a thrilling race. Ryan Lovercamp jumped from his pole position to take an early lead, but was continuously hounded by the #90 of Grain Valley’s Joe Walkenhorst. These two set a torrid pace and quickly distanced themselves from the rest of the field with neither being able to take any kind of an advantage over the other. At the midway point of the race they began to work traffic and Walkenhorst had his sites set on taking the lead, but it just wasn’t to be at that time. Finally, as the white flag was waving Lovercamp was held up by a lapped car coming off turn 2, which allowed Walkenhorst to shoot around the outside and into the lead. Lovercamp tried to mount a challenge as the pair worked through turns three and four, but came up just short. Chad Lyle and Joe Walkenhorst walked away with heat victories.

The Street Stock division saw a charge to the front by a familiar face – John Brooks who charged from his fourth row starting position to take the win, but it wasn’t without it’s share of drama or excitement.

As the field came down for the green it quickly became a three-car battle as Fred King Jr., Cole Wimmer, and Marc Carter all wanted to put their rides at the front of the field. King paced the field for the first portion of the race until contacted with the front stretch wall ended his night and hopes of victory. Wimmer suffered mechanical problems and had to take his mount to the trailer as well, which handed the lead over to Carter who was pacing the field with Bob King on his tail. All through the excitement Brooks was steadily moving his way to the front working the high side of the track and picking off positions. Brooks moved around King to take over the second spot and was quickly reeling in the leader when suddenly Carter’s car slowed on lap 13 and he rolled to the pits. Taking command with two laps remaining, Brooks kept his ride up front with Wayne Harper coming up short in is bid to mount a challenge and had to settle for the runner up spot. Hard charger of the night John Ebert came from his twenty-first starting position to finish third with Phil Wright and Tammy Korft rounding out the top 5.

The newest addition to the CMS family, the Hobby Stock division, also treated the fans to an exciting, side-by-side show all the way to the finish. At the drop of the green Sedalia, MO’s Kevin Perkins jumped to the front of the pack with Butch Knox and Scott Campbell following close behind. Knox was able to work his way around Perkins for the lead on lap 2 only to see Perkins regain the spot on the next lap as Campbell’s car experienced problems and retired for the evening. As Perkins and Knox battled for the point Dustin Draper was moving up from his inside row three starting position and had worked his way into the lead battle by the halfway point of the event. Knox was finally able to work around Perkins and take over the top spot as Draper was also able to sneak past and into second. A caution for debris closed the field up for a two lap dash to the checkers and Draper made a strong move to the inside of Knox, but wasn’t able to hold onto the position. From there Knox was able to hold off Draper who was followed across the line by Perkins, Mike Hamsher and Brad Blankenship to round out the top five.

“We’re real pleased with the car count and it feels great to get that first show in after being rained out last week,” commented Susan Walls after the races were concluded. “It really looks like this is gonna be one heck of a year.”

Next week all four classes take to the track for the special Mother’s Day Race Special. The first fifty moms’ to make their way through the gates will be given a potted plant. Also on tap will be the first visit of the season for the Dwarf Cars and Mod Lites at CMS. Gates open at 5:00 pm with hot laps at 7:00 pm and heat races at 7:30.
