April 20th, 2003

With six new, additional 36 foot high light poles in place, a new interior for the famous “Bar-B-Que Barn” concession and a record amount of pre-season signed racers, Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg will open for the 2003 racing season this Saturday night.

Carded as the 7th Annual “KOKO Radio/ Sunoco Race Fuels Season Opener”, the gates will fly open at 5 pm. As before , hot laps start at 7 with the first event of the year waved off at 7:30. The successful divisions of cars, the “Mighty Modifieds”, Limited Late Models, WOFC Sprint Cars and the wild and wooly Street Stocks will be back to supply the action and excitement.

The third and final practice session last Saturday night at the 1/3rd mile, high banked clay oval was cancelled due to heavy and persistent rains.

“That’s why we schedule three practice sessions every year. Weather is at its most unstable in April,” says track owner Earl Walls, as he goes back up in the lift to attach yet another new, big lamp to the expanded lighting system.

However, the oft said …’if there’s a way to run, we race at CMS’... will continue to ring true for the tenth consecutive year.

Admission to the weekly shows will remain the same yet again. Adults: $10, Senior Citizens (60 and over) $8, ages 6 thru 11: $6 and under 6-Free. Pit passes will still hold at $20.00.

CMS’ “Super-Fast Excitement Track” is easy to get to and find; it’s located eleven miles south of I-70 and five miles north of highway 50 on Missouri route 13.

Back to defend their titles earned last year at CMS includes Kansas City’s “Fast” Richard Layne, again driving Bobby Hunt’s mod-machine, who’ll be gunning for his sixth crown at the ‘Home of the Mighty Modifieds’, Warsaw’s David Gemes in the Limited Late Models and the king of all Street Stockers, Warrensburg’s John ‘the boomer’ Brooks, who collected his 15th crown at CMS last season.

The reigning, three time WOFC Sprint car champ will leave the throne spot for the championship open this year as Independence’s Grover C. Hall plans is taking a year off.

The pre-season registrations showed that even more Kansas drivers are planning on running the high-banks in Warrensburg this year; nearly twice as many. Plus, more ‘true-rookie” drivers have also signed up for their initial try in the motorsports trials.

Rookies starting out this year includes Warsaw’s Mike McMillin, who purchased Hall’s championship sprint car mount over the winter months, Rick Braley from Belton in the Mighty Modifieds and teaming up with CMS’ 2001 Limited Late Model champion Bruce Curry, Daren Rapp, also from Clinton.

Everyone agrees that having CMS 1998 Super Stock champion Al ‘Ford Man’ Mizer from Warrensburg back as the technical official is a great plus. Mizer is well liked among all the racers as he has the right knowledge, and temperament, to do the tough job of maintaining safety and car legality.
