COLUMBUS, MS – Steve Godsey of Bedford, IN stuck with the “high road” on Friday night to win the 2nd Annual Crate Racin’ USA Fall Nationals Invitational Race at Columbus Speedway driving the #14 Indiana Stone Works/Summerville Junkyard Rayburn for Fields Racing of Aragon, GA. Godsey battled wheel-to-wheel for most of the 30-lap race with Jeff Smith of Rocky Face, GA.

The race featured the top drivers from the 17 StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series sanctioned track across the country.

Godsey and Smith swapped the lead officially at the start finish line twice, but they traded the position countless times around the ¼-mile high-banked clay oval. Godsey led the first 16 laps of the race before Smith took over running the inside line. Godsey stuck to his “game plan,” stayed on the high side, and made the winning pass with five laps to go.

“During the preliminary races, the car felt good on the bottom of the track, but Joey and Jeff Fields told me to stay up high in the main event,” Godsey said. “I thought I lost the race when Jeff Smith got by me on the inside, but I stayed with game plan and it came back to me at the end of the race.”

When asked about his thoughts of the “Baddest Bullring In The South,” a big smile came on Godsey’s face.

“I’ve been here four times, and I just love this place because it’s a fast bullring,” Godsey said. “I just wish this place was right in my back yard in Indiana.”

Godsey was the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Indiana State Champion and finished third in the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series West Region point standings this season. Godsey was also the fast qualifier among the 46 entrants with a time of 14.870 seconds.

Smith, representing North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, GA, kept trying the inside in the last five laps, but had to settle for second spot in the AllSouth Racing Products Warrior. Mark Stokes of Steens, MS, representing Columbus Speedway, finished third in the J.B. Allen GRT.

Curtis Cline of Douglasville, GA, who finished fourth in the StormPay.com WRS East Region, finished fourth in the main event driving the Pearson Construction Warrior. StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion and the Track Champion at Talladega Short in Eastaboga, AL, Logan Yates of Delta, AL finished fifth in The Bargain Barn TSR.

Chris Hoomes of Brenton, AL represented Butler County Motorsports Park in Greenville, AL with a sixth-place effort in the Speedy Lube GRT, and Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS sent two hard chargers to Columbus Speedway with Steve Bryan of Collinsville, MS coming from the 24th starting spot to finish seventh in the Bryan Racing Mastersbilt, and Talbert Goldman of Meridian, MS coming from 23rd to take eighth in the Mike Goldman Customs GRT.

Randy Hill of Dalton, GA finished ninth while representing North Georgia Speedway, and Nathan Ingersoll of Robertsdale, AL rounded out the top ten in the Ingersoll Racing Mastersbilt representing Deep South Speedway in Loxley, AL.

Godsey took the lead from the pole position at the drop of the green flag followed by Smith from the third starting hole, and Columbus Speedway StormPay.com WRS Track Champion and the StormPay.com WRS West Region sixth-place driver Jamie Pickard of Columbus, MS in the White House Motorsports Mastersbilt.

The first of eight caution flags came out on lap two when Monticello Speedway representatives Marcus Frisch of Eros, LA and Stormy Derryberry of Monticello, AR in the DBR Race Cars Rocket tangled in turn four.

Godsey led Smith, Pickard, Stokes, Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL in the LSK Enterprises GRT representing Penton Raceway in Penton, AL, Ingersoll, Cory Korreckt of Lincoln, AL in the Montana Saloon Rocket representing Talladega Short Track, StormPay.com WRS South Region Runner-Up Josh Huss of Flomaton, AL in the Charco, Inc. TNT, Hoomes, and the StormPay.com WRS East Region fifth-place driver Adam Martin of Talladega, AL in the Martin Racing Barry Wright down for the restart.

On lap three, the caution came out when Knowles slowed to a stop in turn four, causing Martin to take evasive action, and ended up in the front stretch wall. That moved Hill and Yates into the ninth and tenth spots respectively for the restart. Pickard went to the outside groove on the restart, and began to challenge Smith for the second spot.

By lap five, Godsey began to pull away from Smith and Pickard while they contested the second spot. The StormPay.com WRS West Region Runner-Up Brandon Keeton of Toomsuba, MS spun the Charlotte’s Boy GRT in turn two on lap six the light the caution bulb and close up the field for another restart.

Godsey led Smith, Pickard, and Stokes down for the restart, and they began to pull away from the fifth-place car of Ingersoll, who was being challenged by Korreckt. On lap seven, Ingersoll and Korreckt made contact down the front straightaway, sending Korreckt into the wall, and triggering a multi-car pile-up entering turn one.

The crash eliminated Korreckt, StormPay.com WRS West Region fourth-place driver Terry Mosley of Gilbertown, AL in the Butler Auto Parts Rocket, and StormPay.com WRS South Region third-place driver James Ussery Jr. of Cottondale, FL in the Shores Construction GRT.

Business picked up at the front of the pack on the restart, as Smith went to the inside to battle Godsey for the lead. Smith could get a good run on Godsey coming off the fourth turn, and the pair raced wheel-to-wheel down the front stretch, but Godsey had more momentum on the high side coming off turn two to pull away from Smith.

There was also plenty of passing going on behind the leaders, as Yates worked himself into the sixth spot by lap ten, but most attention was on the top two. Smith got another run on Godsey coming off the inside of turn four on lap 13, and side up in front of Godsey coming off the corner. The pass, however, was negated by a caution flag.

StormPay.com WRS East Region sixth-place driver Dustin Stewart of Eastaboga, AL hit the front stretch wall in the S&H Racing Rocket to light up caution bulb. Godsey retained the lead followed by Smith, Pickard, Stokes, Ingersoll, Yates, Hill, Larry Cifra of Moss Point, MS in the Cifra Construction GRT representing Deep South Speedway, Huss, and Cline.

Smith resumed his challenge for the lead, while Yates passed Ingersoll for fifth and began to challenge Stokes for the fourth spot. Yates got by Stokes for fourth on lap 15, and started to close in on Pickard in the third position.

On lap 17, Smith got the big run on Godsey that he needed coming off the fourth turn, and he took the lead. Godsey decided to try to inside groove on lap 18, and try to make the same move on Smith in turn four, but instead, he bobbled just enough to make him get out of the throttle, and loose several spots.

The caution flag for a stalled car saved the day for Godsey, as the scoring went back to the last completed lap, and he restarted in the second spot behind Smith. On the restart, Godsey returned to the cushion on the outside, along with Pickard, and Goldman, who went from tenth to eighth.

Pickard found trouble on the outside groove in turn four on lap 22, as he hit the wall, and collected Yates, who was able to keep going. Pickard was done for the night and Yates moved up to third for the restart behind Smith and Godsey. When the green flag came out, Yates immediate fell from third to fifth, as both Stokes and Cline got around him.

As the last nine laps of the race unwound, Smith seemed to loose the handle he had on the bottom groove, and Godsey closed in. Godsey got along side Smith on lap 23 and they raced wheel-to-wheel until lap 26 when Godsey flew around the outside to retake the lead.

While Godsey was holding off Smith for the victory, there was a lot going on behind the leaders, most notably, Bryan coming from outside the top ten on lap 21 to rally to a seventh-place finish.

In preliminary action, the three 12-lap B-main races were won by Yates, Keith Freeman of Commerce, GA in the Freeman Plumbing Mastersbilt, who was the Track Champion at Lavonia Speedway in Lavonia, GA, and Cline.

The Race of Regions, featuring the top six drivers in each of the three StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Regions, and the Race of Champions for the StormPay.com Weekly Racing Series Track Champions will be run on Saturday afternoon at Columbus Speedway.

The Race of Regions eight-lap heat races were won by the South Region sixth-place driver Donald Watson of Greenwell Springs, LA in the Baton Rouge Diesel Barry Wright, and Pickard. The Race of Champions eight-lap heat races were won by Penton Raceway in Penton, AL Track Champion Chad Wallace of LaGrange, GA in the Mason Racing GRT, and Freeman.

The StormPay.com Dirt Late Model Series National Tour will hold its final points race of the 2007 season at Columbus Speedway on Saturday, with racing to begin at 1 p.m.
