BULLS GAP, Tenn. (June 18) – The crowd Saturday night at Volunteer Speedway was one of the largest-ever in the track’s history for a weekly show, and it appeared they were going to witness Lloyd Osborne make his own history in capturing his first-ever victory. Osborne grabbed the lead away from pole-sitter Sandy Goddard on the sixth circuit of the 35-lap “Don Smith Ford” Super Late Model feature, and he remained out front until lap 23 when the driveshaft broke just as he accelerated coming off the fourth turn.

Osborne’s disappointment turned to joy for Vic “The Thrill” Hill of Morristown, as the three-time (1997, ’98 and 2000) track champion pulled away from Jeff Maupin to record his fourth consecutive Super Late Model feature win.

Goddard set fast-time at 13.050-seconds (110.340 mph) to earn his first career pole award at “The Gap,” with Osborne timing-in second fastest at 13.076 to nail down the outside front row starting berth. The yellow flag waved for wrecks back through the field on the first two attempts to get the feature started from a double-file formation, and the third try resulted in the 25-car field lining up single-file.

Maybe the two cautions prior to completing one lap might have been an omen of things to come, because with a full-moon brightly shining over the track, a rash of “yellow fever” plagued the event. With one lap in the book Goddard led Osborne, Rick Norris, Kerry Jones and Jack Trammell. The seventh-starting Maupin was on the move early, passing Trammel to move into fifth on the second lap as they raced off turn two.

Once again the caution flag was unfurled on the third lap. As the field tried to get slowed down a huge multi-car pileup occurred at the end of the front straightaway, resulting in significant damage to the cars of Dale Ball, Herman Goddard, Travis Greer, Michael Jackson and Troy Eads.

Going back green, Goddard was followed by Osborne, Norris, Jones and Maupin. With a burst of power, Maupin picked off both Jones and Norris on lap 5 between turns three and four. After challenging Goddard for the lead during the first five laps of the event, getting a strong run on the bottom off the fourth turn on lap 6, Osborne moved to the point.

While Osborne was making his move to take the lead, Hill was mounting a charge towards the front; first overtaking Jones for fifth on lap 10 and then two laps later passing Norris to move into fourth. Next in line for Hill was the third-running Goddard, and on lap 14 racing off the fourth turn he rode the high-line around Goddard to take over the third spot.

Goddard’s slide backwards continued, as Norris made the pass to take fourth from the pole-sitter on lap 15, and then Trammell worked around Goddard racing off turn two to grab fifth on lap 18.

The battle between Goddard, Jones, Greg Burchett, Jason Trammell and Jerry Broyles for positions six through ten was intense, with two- and three-wide action around the track. The event’s final caution waved on lap 23 when the race leader Osborne broke, thus moving Maupin into the lead followed by Hill.

Going back green for the stretch-run to the checkers, Hill immediately dove to the inside of Maupin barreling off into the first turn. Racing side-by-side off the second turn down the backstretch, Hill grabbed the lead and never looked back.

Hill, driving the Landair Transport Inc./Peterson Fluid Systems/Klushman/Comp Cams/JE Pistons/Brodix/Hoosier Tire South/RaceQuest/Vic Hill Racing Engines/MacDaddy Motorsports/GRT Race Cars/No. 1 Grand Prix, captured his fourth straight victory – but more importantly – in his quest for a fourth track championship he moved into a two point advantage over Kerry Jones in the Super Late Model point standings. Maupin, Norris, Jack Trammell and Burchett rounded out the top five.

Completing the top-10 at the finish were Jones, Goddard, Jason Trammell, Broyles and Clint Solomon.

Shannon Buckingham of Morristown started from the pole position in the “Ramey Ford” Limited Late Model feature, and when the checkered flag waved he had convincingly rolled to his second victory of the season. Buckingham powered into the lead at the drop of the green and was never seriously challenged during the 25-lap event, in winning over Skimp Henry, Allen Champ, Dusty Williams and Jeff Surber.

Jerry Broyles grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the “Lawson Chevrolet” UMP (Open-Wheel) Modified feature and appeared headed to victory until mechanical problems forced him into the pits. Bulls Gap’s Bobby Edens assumed the lead and held off Danny James, Kurt Hall, Wade Ramsey and Greg Martin for his first victory of the season.

Phillip Nichols was the apparent winner of the “Bachman Bernard” Hobby Stock feature, but following the event he failed post race technical inspection. With Nichols being relegated to the back of the field, Todd Brooks of Greeneville moved up a position and captured his first victory of the season. Finishing behind Brooks were Jon Cook, R.J. Mayes, Mike Mays and Troy Thompson.

Kurt Owens of Newport battled early in the 20-lap “Allied Home Mortgage” Mini Stock feature with Rodney Kiker for the lead and, during the middle stages with Shawn Henry for the point. But Owens, making his first start at the track this season, pulled away from Henry as the laps wound down to capture the victory over Henry, Scottie Thornton, Ernie Stubblefield and Allen Carrier.

Johnson City’s Dana Ferrell rolled to his first “Renegade” Front Wheel Drive victory of the season over Terry McMurray, Clinton Taylor, William Knight and Eddie Smith.

Volunteer Speedway will host Fan Appreciation Night at the Races on Saturday, June 25, featuring six exciting divisions of racing, headlined by the Super Late Models racing 35 laps for a $2,000 winner’s purse. Adult grandstand admission will be $5, with children ages 6-12 admitted for $2 in the stands.

Prior to the evening of racing, all fans will be allowed to come down onto the front straightaway and into the infield pit area to have a “meet and greet” session with all the drivers and to get an up-close look at the race cars. Drivers’ will have goodies to hand out representing their sponsors (photos, key chains, buttons, hats, T-shirts and candy) to the fans, and throughout the night the track will have many prize giveaways.
