Historic Racing Websites

I grew up in St. Louis and attended my very first race at the old Walsh Stadium track. I also attended races at Lake Hill Speedway in Valley Park.
Are there any websites that cover the history of these tracks?

I have lived in Oregon for many years and have found some excellent websites that cover racing at many California tracks and have found several sites that cover many of the old east coast tracks.

I would really like to receive any links to any of the old St. Louis or eastern Illinois tracks. I have several names and stories about racing in the St. Louis area dating from the very early fifties up to 1956 when I left the area.

Anyone interested in discussing St. Louis area racing can reach me by instant messaging on this site.

Thank you,

Ron Bennett in Eugene, Oregon.
I just completed my 50th season in Northwest racing and love to swap stories and information about both Oldtime and current racing.

At one time I had posted some vintage pics of Walsh Stadium and Lake Hill. I thought they had been moved to an old pics link but don't see such a thing right now.
My first race was seen at Walsh Stadium, also. Probably around '54 or so. I used to go with my mom and step dad to visit her brother and sister who lived next door to each other on Walbridge Ave in north St Louis. They had a neighbor with a JALOPIE race car parked out by his ash pit that was my play area while my sister and cousins went to the park with my aunts and mom. One Sunday my uncle said since I seemed to like that old JUNKER sitting out by the alley why don't we go watch it race, so we did. Here I am 50 something years later still enjoying that same stuff.
Maybe Tim Eaves will see this post and repost some of his pop's old photos for all to enjoy again.
Or maybe Jimmy will know if those old pics are still on here some where and post a link.
THANX RICH

I to saw my first race at Walsh Stadium in the early 50s , my brother raced there before an after He served in the Marines in Korea. His fellow racer across the street ( Don Gerstner # circle 7 ) an they sometimes both used my dads garage an Baseys Shell service Station at Calfornia & Russell. I got my first taste of racing sitting on my brothers lap as he drove around the track an the bug has never left me!

??????

Speaking of historic racing, I recently came across some old family pictures and I'm trying to find out the names of the tracks they were taken at.

One of the pictures was taken in July, 1932 at a track that was located at St. Charles Rock Road and Pennsylvania. They also raced dogs and horses there. I believe this is the track where Barney O'field (Spelling may not be correct) raced quite alot. The grandstands were up until around the 60's.

Another is from a track that was on Broadway by the old workhouse. I think it was around the 50's.

Both of these tracks were before my time, so I would appreciate any help I can get with finding out the names of them. The stories have been passed down to me so I don't have too much more information to go on.

Thank you for your help in advance!

LTLC - The name of the track you are inquiring about is: Maxwellton Race Track
Your are welcome!

Ron,

Email my Dad, Bobby Regot Jr,BRegot04@aol.com, he would like to chat with you, My Grandpa Bob Regot SR, and my Great Uncles race around the St. Louis area then.
Thanks

More Historic Stuff & Some Questions

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about Walsh Stadium. I also read a question someone had about an old track on South Broadway.
According to Allan Brown's book (America's Speedways) there was a 1/5 mile track on S.Broadway called Ball Park Speedway from 1934 thru 1937.
There was also a track in Pevely that raced in 1956, it was alongside U.S. 67 at Hwy. Z. It was open in 1956 and I was told by some fans at Walsh that the track raced on Wednesday nights. I stopped alongside 67 and looked at the track in 1956. Looked like a carbon copy of the track at Walsh as far as the track was concerned but the grandstands were logs laying on the hillside on the frontstretch. There was also a track in Wentzville behind Bob Swantners Ford Dealership. It was called Swantnerville Speedway and track looked very similar to Lake Hill or Belleville (very high banks).
I remember another track that was on the east side of the main highway near or in Flat River. My cousin Bob Bennett raced at the Fredericktown track in the mid-to-late 60"s. Ran a Orange 33 or 34 Ford Coupe. Had a black #1 on the doors with a black lightning bolt through the numbers.
Another cousin, George Bennett raced at Lake Hill with AARA back in the early 50's. Black 37 Chevy Coupe with white #7 on doors.

I saw many Midget races and some of the first Late Model races at Walsh in the early fifties and will try to find my notes on those and post them.

Anyone who has any information about St. Louis area racing between 1946 and 1956 is asked to contact me by IM or to post it.

Thank you.

When I was a kid in the late 60's I went to Lakehill a few times. All I really remember about it was that a guy named Frank Teede was the man to beat in the latemodels. If I remember right he won both times I was there.

Was it Frank or Fred? I thought Fred but could be wrong.
Do any of these names from LakeHill ring a bell: Harold and Bill Workman, Bob Miner, Butch Cooley, and of course Jerry Sifford and Ken Schrader. I'm sure I could think of more, but still a wee bit hung over from the AARA banquet.

I only went a few times but I think you're right....it was Fred Teede. I was only about 14 or 15 so Schrader would've been too young yet as he's a few years younger than me. I really don't recall the other guys.
