(Warrensburg) A great night of hot racing action with a spectacular fireworks display from the Browning Brothers topped off the evening for the 3rd Annual Tom Wilson BBQ Bowl, 98.5 MIKE FM, Modified Special on Saturday night . Jason Hughes, a USMTS driver from Oklahoma drove his Hughes Racing, DeLeon Racing Engines machine to the checkers for the $3000 feature win in the Mighty Modified division. Hughes along with 73 drivers from Missouri, Kansas and Iowa treated CMS race fans to several hotly contested features. Brett Rollert with his KB Painting, KC Gutter Tech, Buzzard Racing Engines Limited Late Model came out on top for his 4th feature win of the season. The Street Stock feature was a close finish with Nathan Himes driving his Integrity Interiors, Tiger Rock, Jay's Service Center Street Stock to the checkers for his first feature win of this season. Young Tyler Lewis with his T&K Roofing, Spice Wine Iron Works, Lynch Farms B- Modified crossed the line for his second feature win of the year. Then the fans were treated to the Tom Wilson Memorial special modified race producing side by side racing action all around the CMS high banks with Hughes coming out on top followed by a great 2nd place finish by Kyle Westerhold. Westerhold’s car had a special Elks tribute to Clinton’s Tony Komer who passed away earlier this week in the building collapse.

Shawn Williams led the Late Model field to the green flag with Derek Nevels on the outside of the front row. Williams held on to the early lead after winning the first heat race of the evening with Brett Rollert in hot pursuit from the second row. Owen Evinger hit the front wall on lap 4 causing some damage to the rear of the car and had to exit into the hot pit area so track officials could check the damage before returning he returning to the track. Meanwhile, Rollert picked his way through to the front and passed Williams on lap 9 for good. Williams tried to get around him again on several re-starts but Rollert held on for the feature victory. Kevin Coyne finished strong in 3rd place after a tail end 10th place starting position. It was good to see some new Late Model drivers as George Jacobs and Steve McDowell finished their first feature races at CMS this year.

The evening started with some of the best Mighty Modified heat races at CMS this year with drivers passing by running in between others and running side by side out of turn four for several finishes. It took five heat races and 2 B Mains to sort out the field of 43 modifieds. Jason Hughes drove home with the big money from the Tom Wilson Memorial after some early race cautions. He eventually worked around Jimmy Dowell who held the early lead and Kyle Westerhold who finished second. USMTS driver, Dean Mahlstedt from Clear Lake, Iowa spun his car on lap 4 after climbing up from the tail of the field after a B-main 2nd place finish. Moving Dave Meyer then passed the race leader Dowell, but just as he passed him Meyer’s car broke and he had to leave the track. Meyer along with Dennis Walrath and Justin Boney had to leave the track with various problems on lap 5.

Then on lap 9 early season hot driver Joe Bradshaw was in the top 4 when his car had mechanical problems. This additional caution bunched up the field again with Hughes now in third and his sights set on the lead. Hughes was moving up and starting to pick off drivers on most every lap while working the high side of the track with great success. Finally on lap 10 he passed Dowell gaining the lead and never relinquished it again.

Kyle Westerhold also drove hard and moved up to the front as he passed Dowell on lap 18 and completed his best finish of the year in second place after starting in the in the 12th position. Dean Mahlstedt originally started from the final row after making it from the last chance B-Main feature to finish 3rd for the hard-charger award of the night. And his finish was more amazing after considering he spun out on lap 4 and returned to the tail end again.

Other strong finishes came from CMS regulars Charles Laizure and David Angell along with Jake Richards and Kevin Sloan from the B-Main into the top ten. Chad Lyle was also in the top four challenging for third until his car gave out with just 3 laps to go in the race.
