The I-44 Speedway provided plenty of fireworks both away from the track and also on the racetrack before a capacity crowd Sat night as LateModel Point Leader Brad Looney overtook leader Chris Smyser on the high-side of turn 2 on lap 20 to capture the Quality Heating and Cooling 25 lap feature.
After a stunning 30 minute fireworks show, the starting field of 21 finally took the green flag after 3 attempted starts as the $1500 to win special had all drivers really geared-up.
On the start,The "Hurryian Missourian" Chris Smyser took the early lead from his front row starting spot with I-44 Point leader Brad Looney following behind him along with Larry Clawson hooking the outside groove with a very tight battle behind the lead group involving Justin Wells,Dustin Mooneyham,Gary Webb,Darrell Mooneyham and others.
A couple of early spins would keep the pack close together. On the restart,Smyser would continue to set a quick pace with Looney working the low side.Early contender Clawson would retire on lap 5 as the pace really quickened. With Looney trying the low side,Smyser would close the door as Justin Wells found the middle groove to his liking and he began to assert himself into contention in third followed closely by Dustin Mooneyham,Darrell Mooneyham,Rex McCroskey,Gary Webb, and Points Runner-up Dave Ware was starting to make some noise from deep in the field. With Smyser holding the low line,Looney tried several attempts to go inside with no luck.As the lead duo battled hard,Justin Wells had his GRT/PMI Engines Chevy moving forward quickly and catching the leaders. On lap 17,Tim Jackson went into turn 3 hard bringing out the yellow. On the restart,Looney drove into the inside coming out of turn 4 and the leaders touched sending Smyser almost airborn on the frontstretch and quickly bringing out the red flag. After a quick discussion, the officials went back to the last lap completed putting Smyser back into the lead followed by Looney,Wells, and Rex McCroskey had put himself into the battle. On the restart,Smyser shot to the inside as Looney tried the high groove as Wells and McCroskey now were battling for third place and Dave Ware was coming fast from the middle of the pack.On lap 20,Looney made the high groove stick in turn 2 and pulled off the pas for the lead as McCroskey would now challange for second. With looney staying on the high-side,McCroskey and Smyser went side by side for runner-up spot and McCrsokey pulled off the pass on lap 23.As the checkered flew,Loonet took the top honors followed closely by McCrsokey,Smyser,Wells, and Dave Ware, the seconf pack included Dustin Mooneyham,Webb,Darrell Mooneyham,Tony Jackson Jr,and 5 time I-44 Speedway champion Ken Essary as 15 of the original 21 starters completed the lead laps.
In the Modified feature,Steve Mulienburg took advantage of his front row starting spot and held off continous challanges from Eric Lampe, and Jeff Cutshaw as those 2 swapped positions back and forth the entire distance.Mulienburg continued to stay on the low groove all night long flawlessly as Cutshaw pulled into the runner-up spot late in the race around Lampe as the front pack including point leader Erik Maggard,James Hartman and Rex Merritt were battling behind.Merritt who started 17th in the feature showed everyone the high-side groove early in making a quiet charge to the front. As the checkered flew,it was Mulienburg with his first win of the season followed closely by Cutshaw, early season winner Lampe,Maggard, and Terry Kirk at the stripe. The second 5 included Hartman,Merritt,Jason Meadors,Scotty Allen, and Brian Schutt.
Rick LeBow made his first visit this season to Lebanon a good experience as the veteran took advantage of his pole position start and led all 15 laps of the FactoryStock feature as Bolivar Points Leader Sean Williams mounted several challanges to couldn't pull off the pass. The battle behind the leaders was tight with Steve Melton holding off repeated challanges from Jordan Holloway and Steve Schultz to complete the top 5.Point Leader Quintin Day pulled in early with motor problems over the 16 car field.
The Bombers pulled off another close show as Sparta's Jon Mulienburg made his second visit strong as the family Stationwagon jumped to the early lead with 13 year old Micheal Maggard following closely and point leader Gary Klossner following in tow.A couple of midrace cautions would kept 17 of the original starting 26 car field on the lead lap,as Klossner made a strong outside move on Maggard on lap 11 to take the runner-up spot, and pulled alongside the leader Mulienburg several times, but Mulienburg held off the challanges to put Klossner's winning streak to an end as he recorded his second win of the season.Following Mulienburg to the line was Klossner,Maggard,Roger Case, and David Hendrix in the top 5 followed by the second pack of Jason Huey,Derrick Peterson,James Decker,Jeff Scroggins, and Donnie Jackson.
Point leaer Mike Joplin shot to the lead on lap 1 and cruised to the SuperStock feature win followed by Reggie Jackson,Matt Pilant,Josh Woody, and Jason Otto.Point contender Rick Brown was eliminated from competition as he along with Pilant, and Dale Scherer were involved in an opening lap incident.Pilant and Scherer both were able to return to action.
100 cars checked into the pits with a Beautiful Fireworks show around the intermission break provided by Quality Heating and Cooling and Matt Sutcliff and the crew from Premier Pyrotechnics of Falcon.
