I-44 Speedway

LEBANON - Memorial Day weekend marked a large, 95-car field for the Lebanon I-44 Speedway. The AllState Dirt Legend Racing Association made it's first appearance to the speedway, bringing to the speedway 18 cars for the feature event.

Cam Case won the Legend feature. The win was Case's second at the I-44 Speedway.

Case started the feature in the ninth position, and by lap two, jumped to the lead spot. Following Case were Chad Shields, Travis Ashwood, David Bauer and Bob Mock.

The first laps were run with little trouble. However, by lap 14, Bauer had steadily dropped spots and left the race to go to the pits with mechanical problems.

Case ran into lap traffic by the 15th lap, still followed by Shields, Ashwood and Mock. The top three help their spots to the end, with fourth going to Chuck Comer and Paul Horton receiving fifth.

Modified driver Terry Beckham Jr. of Webb City won his third feature of the season, and quoted Late Model driver Brad Looney after his victory, "It's about time."

After previous disappointing finishes, Beckham ran his kind of race on Saturday evening. Beckham won the Modified feature pole after a thrilling heat race finish. He kept his lead the entire feature.

After Beckham in first, the first lap jumps belonged to Jeff Cutshaw, of Cross Timbers, Gary Clark, of Walker, Steve Muilenburg, and Rex Merritt, of Billings.

After a caution on lap 3, the top five drivers held their spots but the competition was heated.

When racing continued, Steve Picou, of St. Louis made a strong run, starting the feature in ninth, but taking fourth position from Muilenburg by lap 5. Eric Hudson of Rolla also was pushing for fifth.

Picou continued his strong run and took third. Beckham, Cutshaw, Picou, Clark and Merritt were in the top five spots on lap 10.

Rick Brown caused his second caution of the evening on lap 10, taking him out racing action due to the two-spin rule.

Hudson jumped the cushion on turns three and four, dropping him back several positions.

Clark began to make his run to take back third from Picou, going side-by-side on lap 14. His run was successful as he finished the feature in third.

Beckham, who favors the high side of the track, said the first night out with his new engine proved favorable. He also said he races his hardest in each and every race.

"I try to run competitively with those USMTS guys," Beckham said. "I mean, those are the fastest guys in the country. I try to race with those guys. Even when we come here, we try to be as fast as we can. I have a competitive spirit I guess."

Open Late Models did not race Saturday, but were replaced for the evening with the Show-Me Late Model series.

The race belonged to Jim Fulp and Burl Woods. Fulp held the first place position until lap 13 when Woods took the high side and closed the gap, taking first from Fulp.

Woods taste of victory was short when he went a little too high on lap 16, allowing room for Fulp to regain his first place position.

David Hendrix of Buckhorn won his third feature in the Factory Stock division. Ron Meyers held the lead for much of the start of the feature, but dropped two spots to a third place finish. Jordan Holloway , of Monett, received second place.

Tony Jackson Jr. also got a quick lead in the Super Stock division. Jackson started the feature ninth, and in two laps, set a fast pace in the first place position.

Steve Morton took second. James Flood, who normally runs the Bomber division, ran his first night in the Super Stock division, taking home an impressive third place finish.

Jason Huey of Lebanon, won his first Bomber feature. Huey was running the feature first, followed by Henderson. On the 10th lap, Henderson nudged Huey, causing him to spin into the infield on turns three and four. Huey received his spot back, holding first for the finish.

Next Saturday night will be another points race for all divisions. Open Late Models will be back for racing action.
