I have a crazy idea

Something that's been cooking in my head for a while now (I think I may have mentioned it on here before), and with Bruton Smith's tracks stealing more tradition from the Cup circuit (Rockingham & Darlington) I've been giving it more thought. Alot of us "old-timers" and "traditionalists" are sick of the generic tracks becoming the norm in the world of NASCAR Cup racing.

That having been said, how about trying to put together a pay-per-view series of high profile DLM races avaliable through your local cable or satellite provider? Events like the World, Topless, DTWC, Illinois Fall Nationals, etc. Stand alone events, not sanctioned by the feuding "big 2". I have 15 years of broadcasting experience, but not sure if this is something with potential for success.

I think if it was marketed toward the "real" race fans, instead of the "beautiful people" the Cup series seems driven to attract, it could work, assuming we could keep the purchase price reasonable. What are your thoughts?

I thought you were going to propose jet ski races tonight at tri city, but pay per view on a smaller level is a good idea too.

As someone who almost never gets to go to any of those DLM races due to work, school, etc., I would love to be able to see them, even on TV, and even if it were ppv.

That would be awsome!!!!! Last year I enjoyed watching the xtreme series on SPEED channel but they cut everything out and went straight to the feature. Good Luck tryin to get it to work

I dont think putting anything on PPV is beneficial to the sport/movie/artist. It just smacks of blatant screwing of the fans for cash, or simply milking a successful movie/sport for some extra money.

I would look at boxing as an example. PPV made Don King rich, but it also took boxing out of the mainstream, and I believe it has hurt the sport in the long run. Well, Don King has pretty much screwed it up in a number of ways, PPV being only one.

I guess my point is, you dont put a sport on PPV to increase its' popularity, you put it on PPV to capitalize on the existing overwhelming demand. I dont see that kind of demand.

I see your point t.nie. Apparently you echo the majority of those who have seen the post, as I have put the same thread on 4m, with zero responses. That will help me greatly in my decision whether or not to pursue this idea.

My thought process behind going the PPV route would be to build a strong base for when it gets to the point that it could be pitched to a network. A model of what I hope to accomplish can be seen (now don't laugh) in the world of pro rasslin' (rasslin' is different than the sport of wrestling). When WWE bought WCW and ECW a few years ago, they became the dominant force in sports entertainment. In the process, they alienated many "old-timers / traditionalists". From out of basically nowhere, a reborn NWA signed many of the rasslers who weren't polished/beautiful enough to work in the WWE. They air their weekly shows on PPV at a cost of $9.95, and buyrates have been good enough that they are currently in negotiations with Fox Sports to bring their weekly show to that network. By targeting their program to the "old-timers / traditionalists", they have found a niche in their market that seems to be working for them.

Of course, I'd like to make a buck too.

extreme is tv right now how about just doing it right ,in other words get some annoouncers that come across like they know what they are talking about and better camera work

Doug, you have a good idea, but implementing would have to be done with alot of fore thought and planning. I honestly feel that it would give alot of people an opertunity to see races that they currently have to hope to get to borrow a tape of. If it is done, I think it should be availible on dish, direct, and cable, so it is availible to enough people, or I guess we could have parties at whoevers house has the service that its offered on. I would suggest having it taped, and not live for the simple reason that your veiwers are going to mainly be people who spend their saturday nights at the track. Weekly racing does not need anymore compitition from TV, Nascar does enough to hurt us with their night races. Many people in most areas do not get to see the great raceing and big names that the sumernationals, CofC, and other big shows in our area bring us, you idea would offer it to them also.

Pay for view is too expensive for most people and Earle would not let that happen anyway for his events. Who gets the money from the show that is after the expence for putting on the show if there is any money available? Will enough people sign up for the events?
Don't think this will fly.

just my thoughts on the issue

if you are talking about getting local races on pay per view on a national viewing board I pose one question for you if you was not from the area could you tell me who Bobby Bittle Dean Hoffman Franky Martin who are they what do they drive here is a another question who can tell me who Jason Brown is what does he race what number is he no one knows and no one cares (no offense on none of the local drivers even if i did not mention your name we are worth it I beleave just telling the cold hard truth) do you think the people in Indiana cares who these people are and do you think they are going to pay to see who they are the answer is nope and I will speak as a consumer if you came to me and asked me to pay to watch a local track in will say Texas I would have to tell you where is Texas (no I am not stupid i know where it is) point is I can care less who races down there I can care less who races in Ohio I care about who is racing in Belleville and highland that is it and they show there races on Sunday and I don't know about highland I have heard that they televise it

but here is a good idea for the local racer and races and maybe I am miss reading you're post and this is what you where getting at have a cable or even a pay per view dedicated to just local track by sanction and then by state example have ump sanction have Chanel 1-50 and IMCA 51-100 and so on in side those Chanel's you can like on Monday channel 1 all IL local tracks on Tuesday mo tracks and so one on channel 51 IMCA local IL tracks and so on and you pay a monthly fee for that now that would be something I would do sorry so long but I dont like ending on a bad note so I had to throw the last part in
in conclusion it is not a bad idea and like some one said it would take a lot of planning and effort to get it done but to put just one local track on a pay per view I don't think it would fly very far put several on a pay per view I think it would work good luck with it

well in that case

maybe a few ????? and some!!!!!!!!!what else can we do i thank we have covered them all thank you sweety love ya lol
