Magnolia Motor Speedway In Action This Weekend!

COLUMBUS, MISSISSIPPI-The new beginning is upon us and the season opener for the Magnolia Motor Speedway will get underway in earnest with the 2nd running of the prestigious Cellular South Governor’s Cup presented by Coca Cola featuring championship events in all divisions highlighted with 60-lap Super Late Model event paying 10,000 to win with the purse approaching $40,000 for the Super Late Model division. A strong field of the region’s top drivers plus many nationally renowned racers will be on hand competing for the big money main event at the state of the art 3/8’s mile semi banked oval.

Picking a winner or favorite is not an easy task. The track has already seen four different winners in the first five races held. One thing that should be noted is that the winner’s share has been taken west back across the Mississippi River to Arkansas on last four occasions after Meridian’s Rodney Wing took the win at the inaugural Governor’s Cup last June. Other Super Late Model winners include “Mr. Smooth” Billy Moyer of Batesville, Arkansas who won the Cotton Pickin’ 100 plus the “Batesville Bullet” Wendell Wallace who swept the doubleheader weekend last September. The other winner was Texarkana, Arkansas driver Duke Whiseant who won the Southern Showdown in July.

Many of the top local drivers will be looking to reverse the current trend as they defend the home turf, but is should be another war as most of the previous winners are expected to be in competition. Then add in the unknown factor of the racing surface itself as it will be prepared by Johnny Stokes and anything is possible. Finally, with the addition of other top talent invading from across the country and the formula for a superb weekend of racing action is in place.

Fans should also note the local divisions will also be featured with their Governor’s Cup Championships with the ever popular Open Wheel Modified class competing in a $1,500 to win event that is expected to attract all the top local drivers plus many talented drivers from Alabama, North Mississippi, and West Tennessee. The 20-lap main event should be interesting to watch as the modified drivers will have their skills tested as they face a slicked over racing surface immediately following the Super Late Model main event.

Also providing excitement will be one of the fastest growing classes in the Twin State area, the Late Model Stock class. This class features cars with Late Model chassis and running gear, yet have motors that are designed to limit horsepower and cost, allowing for a more affordable method of competing while still gaining experience and racing in a Late Model style car. The class will be competing in a $1,000 to win championship event and is tentatively set to be the first main event of the evening on Saturday night to get the action underway, as the class is quickly becoming a fan favorite.

Not to be outdone will be the Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, and Cruiser who will also be on the program. The Street Stock class is well known for providing an exciting brand of racing in the area and typically has one of the higher car counts at each event. The Mini Stock class has turned out in large numbers to support the previous events at Magnolia Motor Speedway while the thrill-a-minute Cruiser class is always fun to watch as the tandem teams compete.

Fans should also make note of another new and positive change at the speedway. Non-reserved trackside parking will be available on a first come, first serve basis with trackside parking spots available for $25.

Governor’s Cup action gets underway Thursday night with an open practice from 7pm until 10pm with FREE grandstand admission. Then the 2005 racing season will get underway on Friday Night for Governor’s Cup Pole night featuring Super Late Model Pole Qualifying and plus qualifying races in Super Late Models and all local divisions. The event will crescendo on Saturday night with B-Main events and championship features with the 60-lap $10,000 to win Super Late Model main event.

Fans should note that coolers and lawn chairs are welcome in the grandstands. Reserved trackside parking spaces still remain as well in addition to nightly trackside parking. Plus family friendly pricing will be in effect with children ages 10 and under admitted free; while student ages 11 to 18 and military personnel are admitted for only $10 each on Friday and Saturday night.
