J.D. Hubert of Cross Timbers, Missouri became the most recent United Late Model Association (ULMA) winner after taking the checkered flag in dominating fashion last Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. Hubert was also victorious in his heat race earlier in the night and his win came in only his ninth overall ULMA start this season. Tommy Cordray of Browning, Missouri recorded his best feature race finish of the year and came away with a solid second-place showing just in front of Kevin Kaiser, who fought his way to third after starting twenty-first on the grid. Rylan Long, the current track point’s leader at the Diamond of Dirt Tracks, finished fourth just one spot ahead of California, Missouri driver James Rutledge. Another driver recording his best finish of the year was Joe Walkenhorst, who finished sixth. Rounding out the top ten were John Fellers, Matt Menzie, Andy Kennedy and Harlen Kennedy. A total of twenty-one drivers were on hand for the races. The final regular weekly race night at the track takes place this Saturday night, September 6th. Track management at Lucas Oil Speedway recently announced that the second annual Mid-Missouri ULMA Late Model Championships scheduled for Saturday, October 4th will feature the ULMA cars competing without their roofs. That’s right; ULMA is going topless for this special event! This will be the first-ever topless race for ULMA competitors and is sure to be an event late model fans will want to mark on their race calendars. Look for additional information regarding the Mid-Missouri championships in future ULMA and Lucas Oil Speedway press releases.

Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) hosted thirteen late models for their program last Saturday night and after the dust settled fans in the stands witnessed what many people are calling the best late model race of the year at the track. Two winning drivers, who race their machines to the limit on the high side of the track, put on a driving clinic in the 15-lap main event. Mike Ryun of Pleasant Valley, Missouri and Brett Rollert of Smithville, Missouri, both multiple-time feature winners this year, had the fans’ eyes glued to the front of the field for the entire race distance with their torrid battle for the lead. Lap-after-lap Rollert tried to find a way around Ryun using several different lines to make the pass for the lead stick but fell just short at the conclusion of the race. Ryun’s victory was his third overall ULMA win of the year, solidifying his runner-up position in the overall ULMA standings. Rollert is now knocking on the door of the top ten in the overall standings with only 14 starts to his credit. Several other drivers also recorded strong runs at CMS last week, including Bob King in third, track point’s leader Jon Binning in fourth, David Angell fifth, and Randy Ainsworth sixth. Rookie contender Joe Bartlett of Centerview, Missouri also recorded a top ten run as did Jamestown, Missouri driver Danny Monroe. CMS hosts one final night of racing this Saturday, September 6th with the season championship race night set to go for all divisions. For all the latest news and information regarding CMS visit www.centralmissourispeedway.net. CMS is for sale by owners/promoters Earl and Susan Walls and the fate of weekly racing is uncertain for the 2009 season.

Action at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri was halted last week due to wet track conditions. The track has two additional weekly race nights scheduled for this year including this Friday, September 5th as well as the following week on September 12th. Valley Speedway has stated they will switch over to Saturday nights in 2009; however, the race divisions are undecided at this time. Late Model fans are encouraged to express their desire to track management in hopes of retaining late model racing at the track in the future and for the “Search for Fast October” events, which will take place next month. Currently, Friday, September 12th is the final night of points-earning possibilities for ULMA drivers for the 2008 season. For complete Valley Speedway information visit the track’s official Web site at www.valleyspeedway.com.

So far this year there have been thirty-eight points-earning events held. Current overall point’s leader Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview, Missouri has been quiet lately but remains out front and looks to be crowned the second ULMA champion during the association’s trophy and awards presentation at the October Mid-Missouri championships at Lucas Oil Speedway. ‘Bodee’ currently has nine wins on the year in twenty starts. There are a total of four points-earning nights remaining this year, two at Valley Speedway and one each at Lucas Oil Speedway and Central Missouri Speedway. Mike Ryun leads the rookie of the year standings and sits second in the overall rundown just ahead of Jon Binning. James Rutledge and Bryon Allison complete the top five. Over the next couple of weeks, several positions near the top have the potential to drastically change, which is sure to bring extra excitement to the racing action at each of the affiliated tracks.

ULMA drivers are encouraged to voice their opinion via e-mail concerning a possible rules change for next season regarding the weight of the cars. Drivers will need to e-mail board of director member Danny Lorton at dlorton@missvalley.com and identify themselves in the message and express their choice for what the car and drivers should weigh for competition. So far, just under half of the 70 plus members have placed their vote regarding the weight issue.
