Although wet conditions put a damper on the final few points-earning events for ULMA drivers, as previously announced, the regular points-earning season officially came to a close on September 12th. Once the dust settled, or should we say once the rains stopped, Centerview, Missouri driver Jason Bodenhamer came out on top of the final standings. Bodee earned his championship by racking up nine total victories on the year, more than any other driver, with most of them coming in the first half of the season. He registered his first win of the season on May 4th at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) in Warrensburg. He went on to win four additional races at CMS with his final win coming on June 28th. Bodee's four other wins came at various tracks including the only appearance on the big half mile track at the Missouri State Fair grounds on May 5th. He twice drove to victory lane at the LA Raceway in LaMonte, Missouri; the first time on May 17th and again on June 6th. His final win of the championship season came on July 12th at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri. Bodenhamer registered twenty starts during the 2008 season. Finishing in the runner-up position was 'Flyin' Mike Ryun from Pleasant Valley, Missouri. Ryun came on strong in the second half of the year scoring three overall association-sanctioned wins, two at CMS and one at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Missouri. Ryun registered 22 association starts throughout the year. Ryun also claimed the Rookie of the Year title this year. Finishing third was Warrensburg driver Jon Binning, who drove to victory lane a total of five times in 24 starts. All Binning's victories came at CMS. Fourth in the final tally was James Rutledge of California, Missouri. Rutledge scored two victories, one at Lucas Oil Speedway and the other at the LA Raceway in 25 starts. Rounding out the top five was Marshall, Missouri driver Bryon Allison who scored one victory at Lucas Oil Speedway on July 5th. Allison registered 17 starts during the season. There were a total of 16 different winners during the season among the 86 registered ULMA member drivers in 38 possible points-earning races.

Additional winners this season included Matt Menzie (1), Rylan Long (3), Kevin David (1), Javan Payne (1), Brett Wood (1), Jeff Schlup (2), Jake Williams (1), Steve Clancy (3), David Barker (1), J.D. Hubert (1), and last year's champion Brett Rollert (3). The season was unfortunately plagued by rain-out events with several Friday night races lost at the LA Raceway and Valley Speedway as well as Saturday-night racing at CMS and Lucas Oil Speedway. An early season special at 24 Raceway in Moberly, Missouri was a wash out as was what was supposed to the second appearance for ULMA at the Sedalia half mile. Finishing sixth through tenth in the standings was Steve Clancy, Jake Williams, Brett Wood, David Angell, and Randy Ainsworth. The entire top ten along with other award recipients will be recognized at Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday, October 4th at the second-annual Mid-Missouri ULMA Late Model Championships. The October 4th race will feature the ULMA cars going "topless" for the first time ever in association history. All award recipients will receive their winnings during an official ceremony on the night of this event to include the top ten in the final rundown with points-fund monies and trophies, 11th and 12th place finishers also go home with a little points-fund money. The entire top 24 in the standings receive ULMA membership for the 2009 race season.

Although the official points-earning season has come to a close, Lucas Oil Speedway is still hosting one more event this Saturday, September 20th. The event is a makeup for the rained out season closer, which was originally set for September 6th. This race does not count for ULMA points. This will be a perfect opportunity for drivers to get the feel for the track and possibly try some new setups prior to the October 4th championship races at the track. ULMA drivers are encouraged to voice their opinion via e-mail concerning a possible rules change for next season regarding the weight of the cars. Drivers will need to e-mail board of director member Danny Lorton at dlorton@missvalley.com and identify themselves in the message and express their choice for what the car and drivers should weigh for competition. So far, around half of the 80 plus members have placed their vote regarding the weight issue.

ULMA wishes to thank all of the tracks this year for their participation in the 2008 campaign: Lucas Oil Speedway, Central Missouri Speedway, Valley Speedway, LA Raceway, Callaway Raceway, and State Fair Speedway. We are looking forward to 2009 and will make announcement as details unfold. Late Model fans and drivers are urged to let local area promoters know that they want to see late models racing on a weekly basis at their favorite tracks.
