A hot and muggy Saturday afternoon turned into a scorching night of racing action at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) on KWKJ “MIKE” 98.5 Radio Race Night. A total of 91 drivers signed in to compete on the high-banked track for another spectacular night of dirt-track action in all four divisions. Three familiar multiple-time winners made their way back to victory lane and one new driver found his way to victory lane for the first time ever in front of another great crowd of diehard race fans. All total there were 19 races contested during the evening’s program. The following race report is a rundown of last night’s action. Full results are available on the track’s official Website at www.centralmissourispeedway.net.

Each and every week the ‘Mighty’ Modified division drivers keep the fans on their feet with some of the best racing you’ll see all throughout the Midwest. Over 30 cars were once again on hand competing in four heat races and a B-main event to decide the main event starting lineup. Tim Karrick kept his exceptional pill draw streak alive and started up front in the first heat before sailing on to victory over Jim Cameron and Dave Meyer. In heat two, Kyle Westerhold was victorious over Tom Charles and Terry Schultz. Heat three had Joe Walker crossing the line first ahead of Justin Boney and Curt Potter with Jim Moody collecting a win in heat race four over Donnie Dannar and Charlie Ebert. Veteran driver Richard Layne picked up a win in the B-main event ahead of Jake Richards, Travis Patch and James McMillin. To even make the main event at CMS over the last few weeks has been a difficult accomplishment for many seasoned drivers and once again Saturday night was no exception. The top five finishers from each heat race and top for from the B-main completed the 24-car field of drivers with Karrick and Westerhold pacing the field for the main event. Early on, Karrick was in a class of his own and left Westerhold to battle with Moody, Charles, and Walker. A lap one incident sent Justin Boney and Cameron to the tail end of the field for the race re-start while at the same time contact between Moody and Westerhold left Westerhold re-starting at the tail end before he recovered for a 24th-place finish. Once the drivers settled in to their race rhythm Karrick set sail and appeared to be on his way to his second feature win of the year as Moody, Meyer, Dannar and Walker stayed within a respectable distance within the top five. Drivers did all they could to battle for positions throughout the field but it was Karrick who stretched out his lead a little further over Moody for most of the race before encountering lapped traffic. As the laps wore down Moody closed back up and by late in the 20-lap race, Moody was right behind Karrick going for the lead. To everyone’s surprise, and coming for the white-flag lap, Karrick got too low coming off of turn four and clipped the large tire sitting near the infield and wound up spinning out; losing the lead in the process. Moody inherited the lead while Karrick was forced to the tail end for the final re-start. Once the field was realigned a green, white, checkered-flag finish was on tap and Moody was not to be denied in his Tiner Construction, McNeel Concrete and Construction and Precision Pipe Fab and Supply modified as he grabbed his first-ever feature race victory at CMS. Dannar moved all the way up from his eighth starting spot to edge Meyer at the line for second. Charles, Schultz, and a hard-charging and 24th starting James McMillin completed the top six. The rest of the top ten were Aaron Marrant, Walker, Curt Potter and Kevin Sloan.

For the late models, it took two heats to determine the lineup for the 15-lap feature event as Kevin Coyne registered a win in heat race number one over Bob King and Steven Clancy. In heat two it was Chad Clark, making his first appearance at CMS this year garnering the win ahead of Danny Lorton and new dad David Angell, whose brand-new baby boy Trace William, was born just in time for Father’s Day. With Coyne and Clark on pole for the feature event it looked as though it would be a wide-open event as the two paced the field. Wes Jenkins had trouble from the get go and was sidelined with mechanicals issues before the race even had an officially scored lap in the books. After the field was realigned it was Bob King who found the preferred line and rocketing his way to the lead from his third starting position. King was never seriously challenged for the rest of the way despite a couple of re-starts for the field. Clark and Coyne had a classic duel to the finish behind King, who seemed to be in a league of his own. Behind the leader, Coyne and Clark continued to race hard for the runner-up spot until Coyne was finally able to secure second position, where he went on to finish behind winner Bob King. Steven Clancy, Brett Rollert, Fred King and Clark completed the top six. There were followed to the line by Danny Lorton, Brett Wood, Jamie Wineland and Dannie Monroe to round out the top ten.

Seventeen Street Stock competitors were on hand in hopes of trying to end Brian Johnson’s dominance in the class. Nathan Himes was victorious in heat race one ahead of Herb Dannar and John Miller. Johnson let the field know he was the one to beat with a win in heat two ahead of Tammy Korff and Dale Atkinson. Chad Eickleberry raced his way to victory in heat three ahead of Jake Conley and Brett Nail. Once the heat races were complete, the lineup was set with Himes and Johnson leading the field at the drop of the green flag. Several drivers experienced trouble in the initial laps of the race. Brett Nail, Chris Culbertson and Anthony Whitham all found themselves re-starting the race at the tail of the field. The Himes and Eickleberry cars actually got hooked together at the start of the race and both drivers lost several positions. Himes eventually succumbed to problems as a result of the incident but Eickleberry was able to keep going. Lap after lap, while Johnson pulled away from the field ahead of Korff, Conley and Miller, it was Eickleberry who began charging his way back to the front. A lap 13 re-start for the field saw Eickleberry all the way back up to third position. With Brian Johnson easily cruising to his fifth feature win of the year, it was Korff and Eickleberry who had a classic battle to the line for the runner-up spot. Coming off of turn four on the final lap, it was Chad Eickleberry who found the best line and went on to take second place from Korff at the line. Twelfth-starting Jeff Lazenby had a nice run through the field to finish fourth ahead of Nail who recovered to fifth. At the end of the 15-lap race the rest of the top ten were Conley, Miller, Dannar, Atkinson and Adam Bush.

Another full field of B-modified drivers was on hand to try and race their way into the 15-lap feature event. It took no less than four heat races and an action-packed B-main event to set the 20-car feature event lineup. Michael Mullins started off the night by claiming heat race number one ahead of Ethan Isaacs and Johnny Ebert. In heat two, it was Phil Bradshaw who crossed the line first ahead of Scotty Martin and Jeremy Lile. Last week’s feature winner, Brian Ziegler raced his way to first in the third heat ahead of Tyler Lewis and Greg Marrant while Bobby Raybourn flew the checkers in heat four over Lucas Isaacs and Josh Jacobs. The B-main was a wild affair as twelve cars started the race battling for only four transfer positions. Chris Brockway was able to hold off the field at the line ahead of tenth-starting Chad Lebsock in second, Jay Lyle third and Mark Evinger in fourth. Mullins and Bradshaw led the field to the green flag but contact between Lucas Isaacs and Mullins unfortunately sent Mullins to the tale end of the field for a race restart. As the field once again took the green flag it was Scotty Martin who darted to the lead; however, Bradshaw battled his way back to the front and led until a lap nine caution flag. Once the green flag came back out, it was Martin who made the pass for the lead on lap ten over Bradshaw. During the final five laps several caution flags flew for a variety of problems but Martin was not to be denied as he cruised on to take his sixth main-event win of the year. Brian Ziegler made a late pass on Bradshaw to claim the runner-up spot. Raybourn came across the line behind Bradshaw in fourth just ahead of Lebsock in fifth after starting 18th at the drop of the green flag. Evinger also had a great run to sixth after starting 20th in the field! The remainder of the top ten finishers at the line was Brockway, Wayne Stevens, Marrant and Phil Wright.
