(Warrensburg, MO) Another Saturday night is in the books at CMS as fans and drivers came out for a cool and clear night of racing action. Heavy rains were again the order of the week but Mother Nature relinquished her rain fury just in time for some clear and windy weather just in time to dry things up for racing. To the delight of fans and drivers, promoter Earl Walls made the call early in the morning to go ahead with the race program for Armed Forces Appreciation Night at the speedway and the move proved beneficial as a large field of cars and fans in the stands made their way to the speedway. Service men and women, past and present were recognized prior to the night's action getting underway and based on the roaring applause by attendees, it was evident their sacrifices have not gone unrecognized. A total of 112 cars filled the pits, including 39 modifieds, 25 late models, 21 street stocks, and 27 b-modifieds. There were a total of 13 heat races, 2 b-mains, and 4 main events during the night's program for a total of 19 races.

The B-modifieds kicked things off with Brad Smith picking up his second heat race win of the year over Chris Brockway and Bryan Montgomery. Chris Martin ran strong in heat race number two and won over Jacob Ebert and Gunner Martin with the third and final heat race going to Michael King, over Brian Ziegler and new comer Jack Albright. Five cars transferred to the main event from the b-main with Ethan Isaacs, Bronson Combs, Owen Evinger, Steve Gearhart, and Bobby Raybourn taking the final positions for the feature event. After a near-perfect race last weekend, the b-modifieds had trouble completing their 15-lap main event as several caution flags slowed the race. Pole sitter Smith led comfortably ahead of Jacob Ebert through the early race caution periods as Albright, who made the long haul all the way from Lebanon, Missouri, raced his way to the front of the field. It appeared as though Albright had things in control once he found his way around Smith for the lead; however, contact between Albright and Smith while the duo battled for the lead on the final lap resulted in a flat tire for Albright. Smith took the checkered flag at the line but was penalized two spots by track officials and was originally moved back to third place. The final finishing order took on another new look after it was learned the car driven by Mark Evinger, who was originally scored in second place, did not pass post-race inspection. By virtue of Evinger's disqualification, Smith and the rest of the field were all moved up in the finishing order. For the second time this year, Jacob Ebert wound up with the win, Smith was second, followed by Brian Ziegler in third, Chris Martin fourth, Albright fifth, and Ethan Isaacs sixth.

Up next, came the street stocks for three heat races. Brian Johnson grabbed his third heat win of the year with Tammy Korff and Anthony Ward second and third. Heat race number two was a thriller with Mark Carter eventually going home with the win ahead of defending track champion Nic Bennett and Jerry Schmidt. The third and final heat race proved to be a barn burner as Herb Dannar held back a hard-charging Terry Schultz and Matt Marrant for the victory. Front-row starters Johnson and Carter brought the field to the green flag for the 15-lap finale with Johnson leading early on ahead of Carter. Just like last week, the driver on the move was Terry Schultz who made his way into second place by lap nine. It did not take long for Shultz to power his way around leader Johnson and grab the lead, relegating Johnson to second and Carter to third. At the conclusion of the race, in one of the more popular feature wins in recent memory, Schultz picked up his first feature win of the year over Johnson, Carter, Herb Dannar, Nic Bennett, and Matt Marrant.

This weekend marked the return of late models at CMS under, the cars compete under ULMA rules. Current ULMA point leader Robbie Test sailed to victory in the opening heat race over Jeff Schlup and Shad Badder. The second heat saw J.D. Hubert, who was competing at CMS for the first time ever grab the win ahead of David Barker and Kevin Coyne. Evan Hubert did not let his older brother take the lone family win as he bested Dwight Niehoff and Randy Ainsworth in the third and final heat race. For the main event, Test brought the field to green-flag racing and led the initial laps. J.D. Hubert showed his muscle by racing side-by-side with Test in a classic battle for the lead early in the race with Hubert ultimately taking the point. It wasn't only J.D. Hubert flying the family name though as Evan Hubert also battled for position within the top three spots. David Hartsell had a scary moment down the back stretch but was okay after his crash, which caused a red light in the action. Once the race resumed, Evan Hubert passed his brother J.D. for the lead by lap ten and never looked back as he scored his first-ever feature race victory. Jeff Schlup finished a strong second in a classic battle with J.D. Hubert, who crossed the finish line in third. Shad Badder ran a strong fourth just ahead of Kevin Coyne in fifth; Dwight Niehoff made his CMS debut a good one with a solid sixth-place finish.

Closing out the night was the modifieds, and the drivers did not disappoint as they competed in four heat races. Tim Karrick grabbed his third heat race win this season over Jason Thompson and Chad Lyle. For heat race number two, James McMillin held on for the win narrowly edging out Aaron Marrant and Tim Setzer. The third heat race saw last week's feature winner Jim Moody showing the way over Luke Feeback and Josh Stephens with the fourth and final heat going to Scotty Martin ahead of Dennis Elliott and Johnny Fennewald. In the b-main, Shad Badder, Josh Poe, John Sheets, and Mark Schafman transferred to the 20-lap feature race. On a smooth and slick race track, Karrick and McMillin led the 24-car starting field in the early laps with Karrick quickly jumping out front. McMillin slipped high early on in the race and lost several positions but later made a nice recovery back to the top five. Thompson, Marrant, Feeback and Lyle ran strong in the early going as Karrick was left to battle with Moody. It did not take long for Moody to make the pass on Karrick for the lead as Moody clearly had things figured out with his car's setup. Karrick and Thompson waged a classic battle for second place until a mechanical issue ultimately ended Thompson's night. As Moody sailed away to his second straight feature win, Karrick came home in second place, Marrant edged out McMillin for third at the line with McMillin fourth. Johnny Fennewald started twelfth and finished fifth as Chad Lyle made his return to the track a good one with a sixth-place finish.

Next Friday and Saturday CMS returns to action with the first big-money weekend of the year during the annual Memorial Day weekend special event. On Friday, May 22nd, street stock drivers will go for the $1,500-to-win main event, a total of 24 cars are scheduled to start the event. Also competing on Friday for night one competition will be the modifieds with a full program of heat races, a b-main, and a-main scramble, which will determine the 12 drivers from night one qualifying who secure a spot in the following night's $3,000-to-win main event! Then, on Saturday, May 23rd b-modifieds and ULMA late models join the modifieds for a full program in each division.
