Hometown driver Jon Binning raced his way to victory lane in the lone Advantage Metals Recycling United Late Model Association (ULMA) event last Saturday night at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). However, Binning’s latest victory, his fifth in the association and at CMS this year, did not come easy as he fended off a hard-charging Brett Rollert. A strong field of nineteen late models drove through the CMS gates, competing in three heat races, which later set the field for the main event. Kevin Coyne, Binning, and Mike Ryun all grabbed preliminary heat-race wins. Although the race got off to a slow start due to a few back-to-back caution flags, it did not take long for the fans in the stands to realize this race would go down as one of the best late model races of the year. Binning immediately shot out to the lead with Coyne and Rollert left to battle for the second spot with Shad Badder and Ryun close behind within the top five. Previous track feature winner Steve Clancy quickly found his way into the top five by midway through the race as Rollert made his way into second ahead of Coyne. As laps wound down, Binning’s lead faded and Rollert actually led a couple of late-race laps before Binning fought back, despite having a shock issue, which made his car a bit unstable. The leaders battled side-by-side, using the high and low side for the final 5 laps of the race. As the white flag flew, Binning narrowly led Rollert by utilizing the low line, which he has for most of the year. Rollert, who can usually be found around the high line, stayed right with the leader and pressured him all the way to the end of the event, coming up just short at the conclusion of the race. Mike Ryun ran strong for a third-place showing with Coyne settling for fourth, Clancy fifth and Kevin Kaiser sixth. Shad Badder, Gary Billings, Bob Test, and James Rutledge rounded out the top ten. Racing action resumes this Saturday, July 26th for another night of competition at CMS. The association’s second appearance of 2008 at the Sedalia State Fair Speedway ‘Historic’ Half Mile is just about three weeks away. ULMA late models will compete on the track on Thursday night, August 14th, during the Missouri State Fair, along with Modifieds and Street Stocks. This event will count towards the association championship; all late model participants must be ULMA members and there is a $50 entry fee. All cars will process through technical inspection prior to the hot lap session. The race pays $750 to the winner and $150 to start, pit passes are sold separately. A look at the point standings shows Jason Bodenhamer sitting atop the standings, where he’s been for nearly the entire season. Although Bodenhamer sat out last weekend there are plans for him to return to ULMA action this week; however, details on what car he may be in were not available at press time. Two-time feature winner James Rutledge continues to hold on to second, sixty points behind Bodenhamer. Binning closed to within twenty points of Rutledge and holds down third with Brett Wood and Jake Williams rounding out the top five. After seventeen weeks of racing, Wood has accumulated twenty-one starts, Rutledge nineteen, Bodenhamer and Binning seventeen with Williams and Ryun fifteen each. Several drivers are approaching the fifteen start mark this weekend and will soon begin discarding their worst finishes of the year. The point standings will start heating up by mid August as more drivers reach the fifteen-start plateau, just in time to add extra excitement to the State Fair race. The top twenty in the standings appears at the end of this article.
