The big money was on the line Saturday night as over 103 cars jammed the pits and the fans in the stands came out in droves to witness a total of 19 races during the evening’s program. With only one week remaining on the CMS schedule several points battles appear to be going down right to the wire in each of the racing divisions.

The Labor Day Weekend means big dollars are always on the line from promoters Earl and Susan Walls and the best drivers can be found making their way around the CMS high banks. Last weekend was no exception to the rule as 38 ‘mighty’ modifieds checked in to race their way into the big 40-lap, $2,000-to-Win feature event. A total of five heat races were contested to sort out the feature race lineup as well as a b-main event. The top four in each of the heat races and top four in the b-main made up the 24 starting field. Heat race one went to Tim Karrick over Dustin Boney and Richard Layne. Curt Potter grabbed heat two ahead of Jim Moody and Mark Dotson with Dave Meyer taking heat three ahead of Doug Walrath and Chad Lyle. High ‘Flyin’ Joey Lile nabbed heat race number four over Nick Newton and Aaron Marrant as Justin Boney raced his way to victory in the fifth and final heat race ahead of Jason Bodenhamer and Kyle Westerhold. In the 12-lap b-main event Lucas Conley bested Dean Wille, Ricky Lee Stangle, Sr. and Terry Schultz to complete the final transfer cars for the big race, which capped off a stellar night of racing for the huge crowd on hand.

From the drop of the green flag in the main event it was Karrick who grabbed the early lead from Curt Potter with Meyer close behind. By lap nine Meyer moved his way into second spot with the Boney Brothers not far behind. Meyer’s bid for the win ended on lap 12 when his car stalled leading to a caution on the speedway before the field once again went back to green-flag racing. By lap 12 Karrick was in heavy lapped traffic but continued pulling away from the rest of the field. At the halfway point Karrick had a near straightaway lead on Justin Boney, Dustin Boney, Jason Bodenhamer and Chad Lyle. Kyle Westerhold left the track on lap 21 as did Tom Charles, both suffering mechanical troubles. On lap 27 Jim Moody spun in corners one and two and just three laps later Karrick’s car came to a halt, ending his run at the front, down the front straightaway. This opened the door for Justin Boney to take the lead, now with Bodenhamer in second, with lapped cars in between the two leaders on the re-start. Just after lap 30 Joey Lile’s night came to an end when he spun leading to a restart on lap 35. Although both Bodenhamer and Dustin Boney were right there with the leader in the end there was no stopping Justin Boney as he sailed on to victory in his #18 modified. Bodenhamer came home second with Dustin Boney third, Lyle fourth, Marrant sixth and Karrick rebounding for a nice run to sixth.

A total of 15 late models were on hand last week as both the track points and ULMA point seasons come to the end of the season. Two heat races were contested for the drivers on hand. In qualifying heat number one David Angell made an exciting last turn pass on Ed Griggs to pick up the win with Griggs holding onto second ahead of a hard-charging Brett Rollert in third. In heat two it was James Rutledge who flew the checkers in a win over Fred King and Jon Binning. Angell and Rutledge brought the field to the green flag for the start of the 15-lap event as Rutledge grabbed the early lead ahead of Angell and King. A lap three caution slowed the field for a short time when Jimmy Jobe’s car experienced mechanical trouble. Rollert began to run the high line as he usually does at CMS and began challenging Binning for fourth by midway through the race behind Rutledge, Fred King and Angell. As the laps wore down Fred King was trying multiple grooves to find a way around Rutledge but just couldn’t quite make the pass happen. Lap after lap the two leaders were nose to tail as Angell maintained his spot in third until a late-race caution for Jeremy Watts set up a green, white, checkered flag finish. Although Rutledge had an exciting moment on the white-flag lap he was able to secure the win over Fred King, Rollert, who made his way around Angell at the line for third with Angell fourth, Jon Binning in fifth and Bob King in sixth.

A strong showing of street stocks greeted the large audience on hand as 23 cars competed in three qualifying heat races in order to determine the feature-race lineup. Veteran Herb Dannar got things started with a win in heat one ahead of Nick Bennett and Mark Carter. Point leader Brian Johnson was victorious in heat two over Craig Hayes and Anthony Ward while Thomas Roberts bested heat three ahead of Dale Atkinson and Jeff Lazenby. Dannar and Johnson led the full field of street stocks to the line at the drop of the green flag for the feature race with Dannar jumping out to an early lead over Johnson. A great race up front for nearly the entire race was going on for nearly every position as Roberts held strong in third and Hayes fourth. Johnson found himself turned around early on in the event coming off turn four and relinquishing his second place position to Roberts upon the restart. With Johnson restarting at the tale end of the field Dannar was left to battle with Roberts and Carter for the win. Chad Eickleberry and Tammy Korff both suffered mechanical woes in their heats and had to find cars to substitute in for the feature event; however Eickleberry also pulled off in his backup ride with Korff only mustering a 12th-place run as the two tried to salvage points heading into the final week. A couple mid-race cautions slowed the field again as Carter now pressured Dannar for the lead with Roberts still close behind. On lap 10, with five laps to go Carter maneuvered his way around the lapped traffic and made the pass on Dannar, never to look back. Dannar held back Roberts for the runner-up spot with Roberts third. John Miller had a strong run to fourth as Johnson rebounded for fifth with Nick Bennett rounding out the top six at the finish.

Once again a large field of 27 B-modifieds was present and accounted for in what has been a very successful year for the second-year division at the track. Four heat races had to be sorted out before the entire 27 cars made their way to the speedway for the feature event. Jon Boller, Jr. was first to visit victory lane as he took heat one ahead of Steve Evans and Tyler Lewis. Josh Jacobs won heat two over Brian Ziegler and Dean Wille, with Chad Lebsock besting heat three ahead of Brad Smith and Jimmy Morris. The fourth and final heat race went to Mark Evinger over Chris Brockway and Bob Dumit. In what was to be a wild night of action in the b-mods several caution periods plagued the race, which eventually had to be cut short due to the 20-minute time limit running out on the field. Up front at the checkered flag it was Joshua Jacobs who took his first-ever feature race victory over Evinger, who finished runner up for the second week in a row. Chris Brockway had his best-ever finish in third with Scotty Martin, who was in a backup car making his way to fourth after starting at the tail of the field. Bryan Montgomery had a great run to fifth with Dean Wille doing double duty driving taking sixth place at the finish line.

Next Saturday night is the final night of racing this season with the Championship Race Night sponsored by Warrensburg Cycle at CMS. Several close points races will be decided for the Mighty Modifieds, ULMA Late Models, Street Stocks and B- Modifieds. Gates open at 5 with hot-laps starting at 7 and racing getting underway at 7:30.
