Lake Hill Speedway?

My uncle use to run down there in a Willys. I'd have to ask his number. Perhaps someone remembers a driver by the name of Gus Hyman ("Augie" to his friends, August to others)? If so, and if you have any pictures of his car, it would be appreciated. We use to have some, but they've long been lost. :(

Who can forget the black #67 midget wheeled by Ken Schrader to many wins at Lake Hill in the mid 70's. The car was owned by Hank Green and wrenched by none other than Bud Hoppe.

My Dad has a picture of his #77 curtis craft midget with a bolt on roll cage with driver Gary Hoppe hanging in the garage. I believe turns 1 and 2 are in the back ground. The engine in the midget was a Bud Hoppe built Chevy II.

I remember as a kid watching Schrader, Hoppe, Bob Wente, Terry and Bob Jr., Danny Frye, Wally McDuffy, Tommy Ford and a host of others on the pavement. I almost forgot about Gene Genetten, he was always fast. The funny thing is when I was 7 or 8 years old my brother and I would rather watch the trains go by while sitting in the stands.

Bud Hoppe may also have a picture of the #100 A&W (I think that was the sponsorhip) car that Schrader drove.

Although I'm not a young pup, I'm not quite old enough to remember Lake Hill being dirt either. I do remember those little brown rocks that lined the spectator area. They were always about 6 inches deep and you usually took about 1/2 pound of them home with you in your shoes. I lost alot of HotWheels cars between turns 3 and 4 in those rocks. I remember mosquitos that were big enough to carry you away, and I remember the STP guy too. I think they gave away 45rpm records one night, of the song "STP Baby". I think I still have one stashed away somewhere. I too watched the trains everytime they passed. I can remember a few times when there were trains on the front and back stretch at the same time. I remember the trees that hung over the front grandstands, and Dad always wanted to sit under a certain one. We would stand backwards watching pit road to see who was coming in. Larry Phillips was our favorite driver and we always watched to see if the familiar #75 was in line anywhere. I remember Lake Hill had the stinkiest restrooms too. I can remember dad holding me up so I could hit the trough.

I have some slides somewhere of the Crosley Tow Truck at a car show at Kiel Auditorium back in the 60's. It was hooked up to Eldon Lohman's GTO latemodel. With his car on jackstands, hidden of course' it really looked like the little truck could do the job. It was really popular that year. Maybe if someone knows the Lohmans today, they might have a photo or two.

K here we go

As a young boy growing up in the town of valley park and my grand father being a cop there and my mom and her family growing up there they seen it grow and i seen it close. It was one of the sadest times as a lil boy seeing the only fun thing to do in valley park close down. i guess what made it so fun was watching my uncle MIKE WALLACE and KENNY SCHRADER, ED DIXON,DOUG KLIEN,PAT WALSH,LARRY THE LEGEND PHILLPS, ERNIE JUMPER,SIFFORD REVIN KEVIN GUNDAKER u name them they raced there even though i was young it was the start of my racing world.Prob the best memory i have of LAKE HILL SPEEDWAY is also prob the weirdest one to it is when MIKE and PAT WALSH got in a wreck and were actually on top of each other i think it was mike on top of pat just member the wreck but thank you from all of us for this one last hooooooooooooooorrrrrrraaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh at LAKE HILL you know how bad it was continuing to grow up in the valley with out the track it JUST ****ED and marty hytel would know my papa real well his name was KENNY ADAMS. Lake Hill

Great stories here folks. The old announcer was Al Brinkmeyer,he announced at Belleville also. Leo Ladendecker was the flagman. The photographer at St. Chas. back in the day was Roland Pale, wife Susie, they had their pictures in the old BBQ stand back then.He most likely was the photo. at Lake Hill also. The story the guy wrote about the track with all the detail to the drivers, sponsors, etc. was awesome. I believe the drawing on the trunk of Ray Eby's car back then was a devil holding a pitchfork, that was the Mighty Danny car.Connie and Debbie were his daughters,Connie painted the picture of the devil on the car,it was very cool looking. I do not recall the "boy with the rocket" on any of his cars, but I could be mistaken. Ivan Simms was the Alum-A-Seal dealer and he was also affiliated with Carl Springer, car owner possibly, not sure.

Eby's Chevy Coupe

Mike, I Don't Know If There Was Another Mighty Danny Car But This Is The One Of The Devil That My Dad Painted And Lettered For Eby. He Painted It In A Shop Next To Longwood Autoparts On South Broadway And He Said That For Painting It For Ray He Gave Him A 56 Studebaker Golden Hawk For Payment. TO LOOK AT A FEW MORE PICTURES YOU CAN GO TO MY SPACE. JUST VEIW THE PICTURES IN THE SLIDE SHOW, THERE ARE SEVERAL OLD LAKEHILL AND BELLEVILLE PICS I HAVE POSTED. http://www.myspace.com/coupefan

Question About The Phone Number On The Side Of That Car. It Says K14-0240 . I Can Remember My Parents Saying Phone Numbers Back In The Day With A Letter Or Two To Start Them. What Is That About?

Thanks Just Curious.
