Inside Line Promotions - WACO, Texas (Oct. 30, 2018) - Zane Lawrence jumped back in the seat of Bob Odom's 305ci sprint car last weekend at Heart O' Texas Speedway following a hiatus.
"We didn't get to race on Friday because the track was too rough so they moved everything over to Saturday," he said. "In hot laps, the track was still pretty rough and kicking up dust so it made for an interesting night of racing."
More than 35 RaceSaver sprint cars made the trip to the quarter-mile dirt oval for the 21st annual Fall Classic event. Lawrence's pill draw lined him up on the inside of the fourth row for his heat race. He made his way through the field to third before contact with another competitor knocked him out of the racing groove and back to seventh. Lawrence rebounded to finish fifth, but he was still relegated to the B Main.
"We were rolling pretty good in the heat race," he said. "We were in a transfer spot before we made contact with another car, which set us back pretty far. We ended up fifth and had to go to the B Main to race our way in."
Lawrence finished where he started in the B Main - fourth - to earn a transfer into the main event. He lined up on the inside of the 10 th row and maneuvered his way through the field to pick up a top-10 finish by ending seventh.
"The track was still pretty rough and dry for the feature," he said. "We picked up some spots by just staying on the bottom of the track because everybody was trying to run the top and getting caught by the ruts. Once the groove moved up the race track, I had to pass people by just sliding them and we picked off a few more positions that way to finish seventh."
Lawrence earned the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars in the main event.
His next race on the schedule will be Nov. 24 at Kennedale Speedway Park in Kennedale, Texas.
